About this ebook
“Dirt, sheep, weather of all kinds, and, of course, people.” So begins this lively account of a western ranching operation. Tending livestock as a profession is almost as old as man. In some ways, modern ranching was not too different from tending flocks in Father Adam’s day, but in others it bore the stamp of twentieth century life. Mixing in the struggle to avoid an encroaching public, and the fact that grazing lands happened to be located hundreds of miles from home added layers of complexity of which Adam was blissfully ignorant.
And who can predict what an animal will do? Weather forecasting in those days seemed more art than science. Herders, who were comfortable living totally alone for months at a time, were capable of absolute randomness. Ranching was a practice in pushing through the unexpected.
Tending flocks for a living, with all of the ancillary activities in support, influenced nearly every aspect of family and home life. But ranching also happened to be what our family did. It meant time with Dad, doing what our forebears had done. One thing was certain. Ranching was never just a job.

Though I grew up in central Utah, I have made my home in Maryland for over thirty years. My father was a rancher, and my growing-up years were blessed with many, many hours and days in the beautiful outdoors, with an assortment of physically demanding jobs and time to think and ponder in the stillness of nature. For many years I commuted 45 miles to work, which typically took an hour and 40 minutes each way. Many days I found myself fondly remembering those childhood and adolescent years filled with great experiences, many of which at the time came disguised as hard work.I love the outoors and greenspace. I love riding horses. I still enjoy the feeling of fatigue from physical exertion. Something about ranching and about tending to the needs of a sheep herd placed within me a desire to serve others, and to serve our Creator. That desire to serve has lead to several opportunities to teach, lead, and watch over members of our church, and to assist members of our community who happened to be in need.I have been happily married for 36 years to an amazing and lovely woman. Our lives have been blessed and filled with eight wonderful children, three of whom through marriage, and six wonderful grandchildren.
