Chapter One

Ava, what are you doing! My sister, Isla, calls out from the front of the tiny tour bus as I sit rummaging through my bag for my sunglasses. Everyone is in the lobby, grab your suitcase and let's go!

I squint up the aisle at her and look out the window to my left. Sure enough, our entire group is milling around the front desk of the resort, except for Mr. Hardy. He's standing at the edge of the group with his hands on his hips, peering through the window at me. I let out an agitated sigh, and Isla follows my gaze.

He'll drift away and start doing his own thing, she says, more sympathetic now. Mrs. Hardy isn't about to let him stalk you the whole trip.

Still, I whine, rolling my eyes. The man didn't stop yapping at me the entire hour we were driving from the airport.

I know, Isla says, pursing her lips. We'll try and stay away from them.

His wife seems nice, I grumble, glancing back out the window. I hate men like that. Imagine chasing another woman in front of your wife.

I continue pawing through my bag, still groggy from the flight and my hellish drive from the airport. Isla shakes her head at me, huffing her impatience.

Not all men are like that Ava, Isla assures me, making a face. What are you doing?

Sunglasses, I mumble.

They're in your cup holder! she points out.

Oh, I mutter, turning to scoop them up.

You're finally ready? she asks, feigning shock. I hear you and Josh are in neighbouring cottages.

I swallow hard, feeling my face turn bright red. Josh Madden is an actor; fast becoming one of the most famous actors in the world. He and my sister worked on a movie together recently and she brought him home several times at weekends.

We’ve all gotten to know him a bit, and Aunt Imogen and Dad are obsessed with him. Dad invited him on vacation with us, which was fine with me at the time. But things took an uncomfortable turn for me on the plane.
