    The Problem With the Prophesy

Legend has it that every thousand years for one day the Arcanum moon appears and the demon moon once every three thousand years for five hours during the darkest night of the year its powers of stealth can be felt, two days, fifty years or ninety-nine—time has no meaning. The legend dictates whatever promises or vows are made under the demon moon must be kept or it will collect your soul.

Clandestine groups of people live among us. One such race is called Pantheress they are considered anomalies because of their rarity. They live discreetly and are governed by the ways of their ancestors. They are only truly complete physically and mentally when they mate with their own kind. Their beliefs and practices are totally dissimilar to ours but their belief in God is deeply rooted.

The prophecy dictates that in order for the Pantheress bloodline to survive, once every thousand years it is critical that the Ritual of the Panthers be performed during the Arcanum moon on consecrated ground in the exact place as the original ancestors. But this time that is going to take some clever maneuvering.

Last time before the ritual of the panthers could be performed, a set of mirror images Tenei and Tanai had to risk their lives to compete in four tasks to become the Queenox. The final test was to the death.

This is the second thousand years since the change and this time the demon moon comes to reap. This time three enigmas must be united and made whole and their union consummated by the beast with the blood of a panthress virgin for the offering or the Pantheress tribe will utterly cease to exist. The problem with the prophecy is the 13 th zodiac.

    Pierpoint Bluff

John Hawkins was having one a hell of a day. There’s a nut case running around, so far, he has killed two families, and today he added a third. The newspapers are calling him the Bluff Burner. He’s smart and has left no leads, no fingerprints and very little to go on. Of all the murders and things, going on in Pierpoint Bluff this nut case tops them all. And he leaves his calling card but that tid-bit is not leaked to the newspapers, so when we catch him we will know.

In the twenty years that John Hawkins has worked on the force, there has only been one other case as baffling and important. That’s when a woman and a man were raping teens, women, boys, and a few men. The caramel skin woman had helped them out with that John didn’t trust her at first but she came of her own accord and gave them information that lead to the arrest and convictions of both Liza and Mack Sparrow. By the time that case was over, John wanted to put her on pay roll.

In a small town like Pierpoint Bluff, this kind of thing is just not normal and the whole town is in an uproar. John has not been able to sleep since the first murder five months ago. He’s use to someone being shot in a lover’s spat, now and then bar, and club fights, even a hold up and bank robbing. But this nut case is on a whole different level. It started with the Blake’s then the Lumpkins now its Kevin Travis so far, there’s no pattern we could think of. They were all born and raised in Bluff County, with families. Kevin Travis was married. Long time ago, a woman by the name of Tess helped us out and I just might have to take the ride out to Renfields again and soon.

Timothy Parker came out and asked me was I ready to view the murder scene, he was one of four others that were allowed full knowledge of the case. This had to be kept tight and closed mouth.

John ate three antacids and said, Lets get it over with.

Eugene Hunt was a good ole boy through and through. He liked country music, boots, cowboy, hats, and jeans. He owned twenty-five T-shirts alone and not only did he have a collection of baseball caps he played the game, coached a little league team, and was serious about it in front of the television. He owned a small two-bedroom house on Elk road a Harley and a two-door orange black top Road Runner. He bought his live in girlfriend a car so that he wouldn’t have to be worried about how she got home from the diner—that and the fact that he wouldn’t have to take her shopping.

Eugene was on his third beer when the phone rang that morning.

I hope that the dam car isn’t giving Barbara trouble again. I just got an oil change and a tune up. He said out loud, as he snatched up the phone. "What? Eugene stands. No shit. He listens, When?"

Then he hangs up and paces the floor. Eugene started smoking about four months ago when Jimmy Blake and his parents got killed. A month later, it was Leroy Lumpkin and today it was Kevin Travis. He lights a cigarette off the one he’s smoking and downs the can beer. Lately Eugene was looking over his shoulder, wondering who was watching him and who knew his secret. Now he was the only one left from his old run a round’s in town and the only other person was dead. He tried to save the boy. They were all young, Eugene was a follower, and he knew it. But that’s what kids do to belong.

Tyler throws the newspaper on the porch and waves. Eugene waves back and picks it up, though he liked coloreds he didn’t mix with em he stuck to his own kind. He works for the small police department of Pierpoint Bluff here in town. Eugene might just have to take the vacation time that he has saved up only he wont be coming back.

He wonders what ever happen to Vicky Lynn.

    Written Agreements

Our whole life is about choices, the choices we make, the choices we have to make and the choices someone else makes for us. My life began today at the age of seventeen. I graduated from the twelfth grade and I preferred not to attend my prom because I have never been a part of Bowlden High School, nor did I have one friend the whole time that I was there.

When I came into the house where I not only live but also work, [without pay] the man, Mr. Gilbert, and another man was sitting in his home. The short serious ashen skin man stood when I walked in the side door and in the hatful voice that I was accustom to, Mr. Gilbert said, In here now.

He didn’t use my name. I was use to that.

The stranger introduced himself, I’m Bradford Whey junior executer of the late Mrs. Hannah Gilbert’s estate, and I have to ask if you are indeed Ms. Colija James?

I took out my school Identification card and handed it to him, it was my picture I. D. He nodded and handed it back to me. We sat in the living room [where I was usually not allowed] but permitted this time under the watchful scrutinizing eyes of Mr. Gilbert. Not once did I look at him nor acknowledge his presence. Mr. Whey gave me a piece of paper with my signature on it and told me to look it over.

Did you indeed sign this Ms. James?

I didn’t need to read the paper; I nodded to him and gave it back. He asked, Did you sign this paper and did you agree to the terms of it?

I spoke soft and low. Yes.

Mr. Whey stood rapidly and packed the items back in his leather case saying, In one week I will come back to take you to the place that you are to serve the time in question. You need to be packed and ready. Is that understood Ms. James?

    Yes.

The other details will be given to you when I return on the nineteenth of October at 10 A M that Sunday morning.

When he shook my hand, he gave me the paper. Mr. Whey went to the door and I went to the room in the back.

The room I slept in was the smallest in the house even Mr. Gilbert’s and Leannah’s bathrooms are bigger than this room. There is a full size bed and five changes of sheet sets with comforters to match a dresser with a mirror. The closet and window faces the back yard. I have my own radio, clothes and a large black trunk that was a gift from Hannah one Christmas. There is one feature that Mr. Gilbert does not know about I have a small hidden space in my closet to keep my valuables. Hannah and I share this [it was one of two secrets] she told me to keep this to myself till the day that I leave here. I lay on the bed and thought of Hannah.

She would come and care for me when I was hurt. She took care of me like a mother would. Minus the hugs and love. When I was about seven, I asked Hannah about my mother. We were standing in her bedroom and I was brushing her hair, she told me that she was the housekeeper, a man raped her, [she looked at me with tears in her eyes] you were the results from that rape, she died a few years later, and there was no one to take you because she had no known family. Hannah said that my mother stayed in the room that I am now in and that’s why I live here with her. She was kind, [most of the time].

The room door burst open and it jolted my thoughts, I jumped up and Mr. Gilbert said, Get your brown ass up, and do your chores.

I did as I was told.

Hannah and Mr. Gilbert have a daughter, she’s a year older than I am. Leannah’s birthday is October 19 and mine is July 10th they had a large celebration every year for Leannah. When Mrs. Gilbert-Hannah was alive for my birthday she would give me the exact same things every year, a wrapped gift of jewelry, a cup cake and an outfit complete with a matching pair of shoes or boots. I’d smile; it would always be what I had picked out when she and I went shopping.

Christmas was the same I would get puzzles, pajamas and jewelry. My ears were pierced twice on both lobes so if Hannah got me earrings I got two pair. One year for Christmas Hannah brought me a beautiful silver bangle. I told her that it would be my favorite one; it was heavier and wider than the other three I have and the detail of it was exquisite. I had to be about thirteen at the time. The last gift that Hannah gave me was a book and two pair of diamond earrings. She told me that I was to keep them a secret like the rest of my expensive things from Mr. Gilbert or he would gamble them away. I was fifteen. I told Hannah I would do anything to repay you for the kindness you have shown me. I didn’t like the look that I saw on her face. She had said I am going to hold you to that.

I was quiet and so was she. We spent a lot of time in Hannah’s room. She would write and write. I would read to her or brush her hair and sometimes she would let me paint my toenails after I did hers. Sometimes she would look at me, and just cry. Once Hannah got a letter and it disturbed her so much that she started drinking. I never found out what was wrong. Whatever it was, it was bad. I picked up the letter, Hannah snatched it from me and hollered, and then she sent me to my room.

    I cried into my pillow.

I was never allowed to hug or touch Hannah. She told me it was a bad habit that we couldn’t afford. But with their daughter Leannah, she was real affectionate they would hug, kiss, and cry together. Leannah and I were not allowed to play together since I could remember and she is the one thing that Leland and Hannah agreed on. She is the one thing that they both love, cherish, and spoil.

Hannah and Mr. Gilbert didn’t share a bedroom, but twice a week like clockwork, he visited hers. Sometimes Hannah cries the whole time, most often, she was quiet, and there was a lot of banging now and then Hannah would moan and talk to Leland and it caused a rouse between my legs and I would have a hard time going to sleep.

What I liked is on occasion Hannah and I went on holiday. When school was out for the summer, she and I would be gone. Hannah said that she needed to get away from the monster I laughed because it’s the name I had called Mr. Gilbert once when he had beaten me and slapped Hannah because she tried to stop him. I was not upset for myself I was sad for her. Sometimes we would just go to a hotel and several times, we went on business trips and she would explain everything to me. That’s the only time that Hannah was encouraging with me in conversation. She would be rapt in the explanation and I listened eagerly and asked questions that she answered completely and elaborated when I didn’t understand. She spent long hours teaching me how to read and word contracts and if it was anything to do with business, Hannah would explain it to me and I was eager just for her attention.

I really liked room service too. Once we went to a hotel and a man stopped us, he said no colored allowed Hannah showed him a paper, the man didn’t like it much, but I was allowed to go with her. Hannah told him that it was the last time she would patronize this hotel and she said that she would also let the owner know. He was nervous and said that he was just following the rules. When we got to our rooms, I asked what was the paper you showed him. She went into her purse, got it out, and handed it to me. It read . . .

    Mrs. Hannah Gilbert

    2838 Heightsdale Drive

Mrs. Gilbert is never to be unattended while in public.

She suffers from asthma and dizzy spells

and she is to have daily injections from a

    traveling nursemaid.

It was signed doctor orders David Nuff 555-9429

I handed it back to Hannah and she didn’t look at me.

I had changed by now into a pair of blue jeans, I was headed to the kitchen to prepare dinner. The maids we use to have before Hannah died doesn’t come anymore and I am the one who does the housework. For the most part, I don’t mind, only now and then it gets me down. A few times when I was younger I caught Mr. Gilbert with the younger of the two maids bumping and grinding. He didn’t stop what he was doing but that night he would lock himself and me in the basement, then he would beat me with his belt and dare me to tell a soul. Most of the time, he had been drinking. A couple of times Mr. Gilbert beat me till he passed out. I didn’t ever tell because God already knew. If it were bad and I was bruised the next day he wouldn’t leave the house or allow me out my room. Hannah would be attentive and keep me close. She only asked me once what happened. I told her he did. Hannah looked frightened, she asked, Is this the first time?

I shook my head no not meeting her eyes. How often? She asked.

I was near tears as I tell her two or three times a week.

She stormed out the room. A couple of times Mr. Gilbert had hit me with his bare hand so hard and fast, I had black eyes and couldn’t go to school. He and Hannah argued for a long time. When it was over, he slammed her door. She was crying at first, and there were hushed angry tones from him then she ended up moaning before he walked out. I was nine or ten at the time. After that if I did anything Mr. Gilbert didn’t like, when Hannah was away that weekend he would beat me for it and talk about it while he was hitting me. I didn’t give him any reason but most times, he found one or two. I was just like Hannah, something he did once or twice a week. When I got older, Mr. Gilbert would snatch me by my hair or slap me around if he was angry and when he was drunk, it didn’t matter if I had done anything or not.

The one thing that I was allowed to do was have dinner with them. It was also the one thing that I didn’t like doing. That night I fixed pork chops, rice, and Gravy for dinner; we had spinach on the side. I set the table and gave them water, because he drank water with his food, [I rolled my eyes] I put soda on the table for Leannah, and a beer on the table for Mr. Gilbert as Lee [his nick name for Leannah] came to the table. I was sitting there as usual waiting for them. Mr. Gilbert [Leland] what I called him in my head, ignored me so did Lee. They talked about their day.

Leannah is a nice looking young woman. She has blond hair [from a salon] because she wanted something to remember Hannah by so she dyes it the same color, well the hairdresser does, it hangs thin to her shoulders and she keeps it shorter in the back. Lee has brown eyes. Hannah’s eyes were blue. Lee and I are the same height. We stand about five feet seven. I wear a size sixteen. Lee wears a size twelve both of us are shapely. She works out more so her body is toned and I walked more so my body is rounder. Both our feet are a size ten. I know this because she has borrowed my boots and given me shoes.

Her breasts are large and mines are like grapefruits. Leannah has five-ear piercing on her right ear lobe and one on the left. I have light brown skin my eyes and hair-are black. My hair is thick and hangs to my shoulder blades, I keep it in a ponytail or just to the back. Lee is utterly stuck-up. She has one of those whinny voices that she uses with her father all the time. But when she’s sneaking around with boys she sounds a lot different. She goes to Loridel Prep School and she will not graduate till this coming January. When Leannah sees me on the street, she’s quick to mention that I’m her maid and her friends look at me like I have some kind of disease or something.

Once we were both in Norman’s Deli, Leannah and I had spoke then talked for a minute. One of her boyfriends said, Hey let’s party with your friend the pretty one with the black eyes over there.

Lee; That is the maid-she cleans our house.

I have never forgotten how disgusted she sounded nor the look on her face—she looked jealous if you ask me—but it was her vindictive tone, which I replay in my head.

Leland; Soon honey we’ll have the house to ourselves because the help is moving out.

Lee looks at me I feel her. The look on Leland’s face is unadulterated greed and he has a big wide grin. Leannah doesn’t notice because she’s staring at me. Leland asks, Have you considered where you want to have your party at this year?

Leannah squalls with delight, Daddy please, what about the same hotel that I had it two years ago?

I give her a quick side-glance, that’s where she lost her virginity. Anna [what Hannah use to call her and what I call her] is dating some guy named Gunther Bernhardt his father owns five corner stores. Leland falls all over himself but tries to act cool when Gunther comes by. Anna won’t have sex with him she said, Daddy told me not to but to date him anyway.

I finish my dinner first and clean up. I still have to do the laundry and Anna has a date tonight. CJ will you be sure to come do my hair?

[I don’t look at her], Yeah.

I finish quietly and quickly hoping that Leland will get in the bottle tonight or have a date himself. He hasn’t beat me once since the day that Hannah died but that doesn’t stop him from snatching me by my hair, slapping me or pushing me into walls or knocking me down and screaming hollering or cussing at me when we’re alone.

Leland makes a big deal of a gold necklace that he gives Anna.

Lee, honey you need to be thinking about marriage soon. No daughter of mine should have to work like some (pause) common woman. He glares at me, when that Gunther gets here he’s going to make an honest woman of you and I am going to see to it.

Anna was too stuck on the details of her party but-there was something final in the way Leland said that—and looked at me. It was not my business. I cleaned the kitchen. An hour later, I went to Anna’s room knocked and opened the door. She was sitting cross leg at her vanity in a pink robe. Again, her room was changed this time it was all in pink.

    The room looks nice.

Leannah smiled. She has a TV and a stereo with a cassette [its new] a queen size—canopy bed walk in closet and three shelves full of shoes. She collects teddy bears and dolls; they have their own twin size bed. She has two eight-drawer dressers, a mirror, and her own bathroom. The hot roller set is plugged up when I come in. I stand behind Leannah, we both know that her father is listening so we talk and write.

I asked, Did you get the records yet?

Yep, I could put em on if you wanna hear em.

    No thanks.

She handed me a roller. I have a blue shirt and a pair of pants to add to the wash and I need my pink sweater when you’re finished.

I have a load in the washer as we speak.

I part her hair, and put the rollers in and use the styling grease as I go. She writes . . . Why are you leaving? I write . . . Your mother sold my services to someone else. She wrote . . . When? I write . . . While she was sick.

Anna and I both know that my leaving is for the best. She has come in and watched Leland knock me around on several occasions and it was her crying that subsequently stopped him. After I turned eight, I didn’t cry anymore. There were tears but I didn’t scream and holler out. The few times I did cry it was low when Leland had finished and gone.

Leland comes to the door; I just got a curler in my hand. If we were caught, I would get knocked around when Anna leaves.

Where are you and Gunther going honey?

To the malt shop and out to a movie the new one with Dean Martin.

I knew that Anna loved Sidney Porter and we both smile slyly in the mirror. Leland asked, What time is he picking you up?

Eight o’clock, we should be back by twelve thirty daddy.

The house phone rings and Leland leaves.

We whisper. Leannah asks, Did you know this?

No, I just found out when Mr. Whey came by and told me today.

Daddy took me to see the man’s boss a Mr. Parson about a week ago and the man Mr. Whey was there. Momma left me some money that I cannot get till I graduate. Daddy is not to know, it’s my money.

I didn’t ask how much and Anna didn’t say, she was thinking so I just rolled her hair. She said, Daddy also got an envelope and it has to be money because he is planning a trip.

    I whispered, I don’t think Leland’s coming back.

    Neither do I.

We both heard Leland happy on the phone.

That night Leland left fifteen minutes after Leannah and I had the house to myself. I took a long hot bubble bath in Hannah’s mauve and black marble bathroom. I got out just in time because Leland and a woman were coming in. She was saying, stop it honey wait till we are inside. They were laughing. She said, see, this is a nice big house."

He sounded disgusted saying, I’ll be glad to get rid of it.

He led her straight to Hannah’s old bedroom, [right next to mines] and slammed the door. I listened to the sounds that came from the room or rather from them. This is where Leland took all the women he brought home. I never knew why. I thought that he was punishing the room because it was Hannah’s. Something else I noticed was that none of them moaned the way that Hannah did. Some nights Leland was upset about this. I heard him talking out loud about it once before to himself drunk.

The next day Leland was in a good mood, he sent me to the deli to get some beef sandwiches, soda, ice cream, and ale for a float. It was seven o’clock in the evening and Normans Deli closed at seven thirty. I got there on time and was the last one let in. When I was leaving the deli a man rushed past me and knocked the sandwiches out my hand. The paper bag whipped in the wind and flew away, the sandwiches smashed on the sidewalk. I wanted to cry. He just looks at me. I said, The least you could say, is excuse me.

A woman walking by said, The nerve, talking to a white man like that.

The man and I are still staring at each other when Mr. Norman comes out. I take the newspaper bend and clean up the mess.

Its okay I can fix more sandwiches if you can wait.

The man continued staring at me. There is no smile on either of our faces. Mr. Norman said, I can handle it Mr. Cain your order is ready.

    We all go in.

I said, I can bring you the money tomorrow or I’ll work for you a day this week Mr. Norman, the order belongs to the Mr. Gilbert.

He was blasé, That would be fine Colija.

I don’t look at the man but I feel him looking at me. Mr. Norman says here is your order Mr. Cain thanks and have a goodnight."

Mr. Cain said, Excuse me for bumping you. He puts twenty-five dollars on the table, pay for the order so that you do not have to work the day for my mistake.

I faced him. Intrepidly he closed his eyes and smelled my hair as if he loved the shampoo and conditioner I used. He bit his lip while studing my face, replaced the trim sunglasses before turning and walking out. The swagger in his hips intoned his arrogance and I was enthralled by it, [him].

Collend gets into his waiting 540 XL bright green sports car and drives off; he only wanted to catch the deli before it closed. He was not looking when the young girl came out and he did bump into her. What shocked him was, when she spoke it was not in anger it was as if she was frustrated. She didn’t raise her voice to him but her tone got his attention. He wanted to say anything but he couldn’t. She was striking and he was satisfied just standing there looking at her. When Mr. Norman came out the world started up and she was walking into the deli. He had wanted to ask for her name or number but she looked to young. Hell he was young himself but she couldn’t have been any more that seventeen or eighteen

Collend is twenty-four. When he walked up behind her, (Colija) he wanted her to know the sound of his voice. Females had never left him speechless. She did. He loved the raw brash scent of her and the way that she moved. Collend also liked the thrill the young woman (Colija) gave him. He couldn’t contain himself he was drawn to her scent. To her.

    *     *     *

Colija cannot get the sound of his dignified deep-toned voice out of her head. The heat from him was driving her wild inside.

The next five days pass quickly and not once did Leland yell at me, in fact, he was real happy. The day before I am to leave I come in the side door and Leland is on the phone arguing with someone about the house.

What do you mean that I can’t sell it? That’s ridiculous I will be talking to my lawyer about this very matter.

He slams the phone down. I hurry quietly unseen to my room and stay out of his way. Then I hear Anna saying, Momma didn’t leave the house to you, why not daddy?

    Don’t know honey.

But something in his tone suggests that he does know.

This is the night that Leannah is celebrating her birthday at the hotel. She sneaks in my room, Colija you’re going to my party later so be ready.

I sat up excited, You wouldn’t dare.

    I all ready did.

We giggle softly between us and I say, What the hell.

Leannah had taken the small bottle of Valium that Hannah used to make her sleep and kept them. Twice before she had spiked Leland’s liquor and tonight, she did it again for me.

Put on some jeans and we’ll dress at the hotel.

Whom are you going with? I asked her.

You’ll see and don’t bring any cloths because I got you and I a new outfit.

We hugged for the third time since I had known her.

That night we both were walking on eggs shells as Leland drank the beer. By seven, he was passed-out with a bottle of liquor. Anna was pulling out the driveway. She has a two-door red Honda.

When we got to the hotel, I waited while Anna got the keys to the room. We went up Leannah said that she was sleeping here tonight. She gave me a duffle bag, It’s a going away gift Colija. I’m sorry that I treated you mean and acted like a brat, but when you came to live with us my mother spent more time with you-keeping you away from daddy and I was always a little jealous. We hugged.

We both showered and changed. Leannah brought matching outfits hers was red her favorite color and mines was black. She wore all black accents and I wore all red accents. We had boots, hats, and purses plus slim light colored shades. Leannah said, Look in the zipper.

I pulled out a silver charm bracelet, Thanks Anna.

She brushed her hair and put on the hat and I said, All your missing is a guitar. She smiled and straightened my collar.

I wore my hair combed to the back under the hat.

Anna; Don’t take off the shades.

Cool. We had on a one-piece straight leg jump suit that zipped in the front just below our breast. Leannah’s was skintight and mines fit snug but perfectly. She put on make up. I only wore mascara. We were ready.

The party was on the roof of the hotel. It was eleven PM by the time we got there and it was already jumping. The music was moderately loud she and I parted through the door. Leannah met and talked with people smiled and hugged them. I walked around and watched. I was still on my first drink an hour later.

There was a wild haired green-eyed blond working the floor. When he danced, it was exciting to watch—only he looked [conceded] uninterested as if he manipulated the music not the other way around. He was enticing. Anna walked over to him. They talked and laughed for a while then he took her on the floor and worked circles around her. I was moving to the rhythms of his hips when a guy pulled me on the floor. I danced. Leannah and I danced close and seductive together; it turned the green-eyed blond on. He yelled, Hell yeah. That’s what I’m talking about tonight.

I danced back to the guy and told him not to touch me as I danced and gyrate to the music, I was lost in the sound, [it dictated my movements]. When I opened my eyes people were watching me. I was in perfect sync with the blond and he was keeping up with my every move. When the music changed, Anna stormed off and I went after her. The blond came after me. Forget her come on love lets get outta here.

I told him to go ride a horse as I walked away and his laughter rang in my ears. I liked the sound of it. Something made me turn and the blond was standing there looking intrigued. At the bar, I sipped Anna’s drink. The blond walked up behind her slid his hand in her suit, caressed her breast, and said, Leannah who is your friend?

Anna didn’t answer. The arrogance more apparent now that his persona changed, the blond was looking straight at me, but in Anna’s ear devious and low, he purred, I wouldn’t mind a threesome. Simultaneously he bit her ear and squeezed her nipple with both his mischievous green eyes on mines. Anna’s eyes closed and her mouth opened, then she looked at me questionably.

I rolled my eyes at him and said, Bathroom, as I pulled her up.

The blond said, We could do it there too.

He laughed and licked his long tongue at me.

Anna and I got in the bathroom, That is the mystery guy?

She pouted, Yeah but now he’s interested in you.

"O he is way to wild for me, but dam girl he is so fine.

We laughed and the smile drained off my face, thanks for inviting me Leannah, I’m going to disappear, go and have a good time at your party."

We hugged for the last time.

Leannah smiled and fixed her clothes then left. I took off the hat and shades then waited for five minutes. I was looking in the mirror and today I had a genuine smiled. I was about to walk out the bathroom when the blond came slinking in, Be my first taste of honey tonight. [He spoke low and seductive as he took off his shades and brazenly looked me up and down]. Dam, you’re just a baby. [I liked the fire in his green eyes; I gave him an equally wicked smile to match the one he was giving me]. The blond moved closer and spoke deeper. But when me and my tongue are finished you-will feel like a woman [I bit my lip]. Two of his friends were listening and making sure no one came in. [He was wildly attractive and the sound of his voice was making me horny] He came closer. When I screw you-you will be a woman.

There was hushed laughter from the doorway. I closed the space between us and touched him. Both my hands glided leisurely over the silk shirt while looking into his eyes. His long blond lashes and eyebrows blended with his pallid skin so well that his eyes looked emerald. I rubbed my hand along the rough feel of his jeans liking the hands on experience of his stiffness as it became solid with my touch. He licked his lips, and a small indecent smile lit his devilish face. I closed my eyes, and raked my nails over his bulging member then caressing it I whispered, One taste of me would make you the man you think you are.

Just loud enough for his friends to hear I backed up and said, Go play with your toys cowboy I don’t want a ride.

His eyes widened as if he was really seeing me for the first time, I like the sudden awareness on his face, the arrogance gone for the moment. I wore a satisfied smile as I turned to the mirror put my shades and hat back on and walked away from him.

The two men were saying I don’t believe it you struck out with a brown skin for the first time in your life K man you gettin weak. They were having a field day laughing at him. But the blond didn’t think it was funny at all.

It was about two that morning. I went out the side door into the hall. I was turning the corner when something cold splashed the front of me. I shivered, closed my eyes, and pulled air in through my teeth. I looked up into the eyes from the deli he was shocked and so was I.

I sang, What a pretty mess. Tug the suit and handed him the ice out of my breast. He took it, grinning. I said, You’re punishing me aren’t you?

I shook my head slowly and walked away, when I looked back he was biting his lower lip watching the swing in my hips with a somewhat lewd-lost in thought-expression on his face. I smiled completely flattered by the attention and as I watched, he slid the ice cube slowly over his tongue several times suggestively before holding it in his mouth. Then he smiled devilishly and so did I. I took the hat off smoothed it back on and kept walking, my boot heels echoing in the hall. I went to the room got my things and changed clothes. I feel like I was glowing, it felt wonderful.

Duffle bag in hand and a chiseled smile on my face I can just imagine what the author wanted you to feel when Cinderella was at the ball. Cabs were slow and I didn’t hitch hike like some girls did. I walked till the bus came and made it back in the house by three forty in the morning.

Leland was just stirring. I hurried into the bathroom and put on pajamas, flushed the toilet so that he would hear the sound. He looked in Anna’s room grunted and went up to his own room, but he looked at me with a hatful glare as I walked out the kitchen with a ham sandwich.

I fell on the bed still tingling with excitement. I don’t know what has gotten into me. Maybe the thought of leaving here has made me crazy. And the way the blond guy looked at me, it was making me obnoxious as he was. Thing is I felt him and I wanted it desperately. But I cannot describe what ‘It’ was. The man with the eyes and black hair his mind and mine were on fire. I was lost in the way that it felt just being near him. I wanted to laugh out loud but I don’t dare. My hands were between my legs, I lay on my side and worked the sensitive spot with my fingers till I shuttered and my wrist ached. I went to sleep with a smile on my face.

That night Colija dreamed of three horses. They each needed her. One of them was snowy white he had blue lifeless eyes and he was sick. Colija had to figure out what she needed to do to cure him. The next two were black. One wanted the other ones away, he wanted to ride her and she wanted to let him he was wild and he wanted to be wild with her. The last one was mean spirited he caressed Colija as she lay beside him. He licked her and she cried as he brought her. His eyes were spiteful-flat there was no luster to his dark mane it was bland all over and Colija knew that he was dying, what was she to do?

Colija moved in her sleep as Leland stood and watched her.

Kemp was going to go after the golden skinned girl in the black fitted jumpsuit but his two goons; Tray and Cubeck made him loose sight of her. She made him do a double take when she was on the floor dancing. It was, the way that she barely moved to the music (for some reason Kemp thought of a panther) he was strangely attracted to her. His mouth had never been between a woman thighs but it was all that he could think of since he watched her dance with Leannah.

He met Leannah a few days ago at the prep school, she was waiting for a ride, and he was waiting for Lauren. Kemp wanted his tool handled and he was bored. Lauren called the day before and he said if I pick you up will, you suck it all the way home? Lauren had laughed and said all the way to the hotel. Kemp said deal. He took Leannah instead and she was a hot piece of used tail. Her mouth was very experienced and so was her body, that was okay he liked em already broken in he could treat em rougher.

Kemp stood calculating his plans for the evening as he watched the two women on the floor dancing. He contemplated having honey with his milk. Then he thought about it. He didn’t want any milk tonight he wanted to break honey in, several different times, several different ways. His mind was racing as he watched them going in the bathroom. Thing is honey fooled him; Kemp had closed his eyes when she ran her hand over the length of his hardness. His mind was lost in the smell of her body and he was more than surprised when she walked away. Stunned in fact. He couldn’t recall the last time ANY woman walked away from him especially after sizing him up like she had done so leisurely.

Kemp had not wanted any woman in a long while; sex was just something that he was use to doing because he was bored (and he craved it). He pumped Leannah for the information that night. Literally.

She told me that the young woman’s name is CJ she’s their maid she’s only seventeen. I told her if she wanted to see me again call when the maid could come too. Leannah had said CJ services were sold to someone else by her parents. I told her thanks for the ride it was fun while it lasted.

Kemp and Leannah had screwed for two hours and she mouthed him till he was sore, he still walked away with a hard on. He waited till his friends were finished and they all left. Kemp didn’t feel sorry-nineteen was legal ass. He shook his head and drove off in a 540XL silver car. Kemp would be making the trip back home in a while to see his dad. For now he was going to get some breakfast then find a pair of large breast to pass the time.

Leannah had a great birthday (after Colija left). Kemp was all over her and she was more than ready. He took her down to the room and humped her till she was tired. Then he said drink this and she did, her head was dizzy, and a light came on in the room. Her mouth was on his shaft and his hands were fisted in his hair. Then she was being pumped from behind and Kemp was saying yeah baby that’s it. The two sensations were new to Leannah and she wanted more. His friend and the other one-changed places behind her and it was Kemp watching. When they were finished, Kemp said, If you wanna see me again call me when you can bring the maid.

Now Leannah was crying because Colija would be gone and he wanted her. Kemp just wouldn’t listen, what did he want with a colored when he could get what he needed from her. The three of them left.

It was 8 A M Sunday and Colija was getting dressed to go she was packed but she wasn’t finished. She waited till Leland came in the room. She knew he would. He ransacked all her stuff and took what he thought was of any value then he snatched Colija by the braids and said, I’m glad to be rid of your black ass.

Leland pushed her to the bed and put the (cheap) jewelry in his pockets. He also took the twenty-seven dollars that she had in her purse, spit on the floor on his way out and slammed the door. Colija was indifferent about his attitude towards her. Leland no longer offended Colija she had long since grown accustom to it. The only thing that she regretted was not going to Hannah’s funeral. Leland had seen to that. Neither she nor Leannah had been allowed. Colija cleaned up the mess and wondered if the books held the reason Hannah had cried sometimes when she looked at her. She tried to remember the nickname that Hannah use to call her when she was much younger but it wouldn’t come to her. For some reason all she could think of was broken glass. That’s what saying the name sounded like to her, Colija smiled when Hannah would call her by the name but there had been no smile on Hannahs face at all.

Colija waited till 9:40 to leave the room. Just before Mr. Whey came and rang the doorbell, she opened the hidden space got the box of jewelry and put it in her trunk then she got the eight hundred sixty seven dollars as well as a ceramic bank full of silver change. Hannah would give her money from time to time and Colija saved most of it. Hannah had told her you never know when you might need a little nest egg.

There was a satisfied look on Leland’s face when Colija walked out, he whispered, Bye nigger.

It was the only time that Leland had said anything so hateful to her. The tears streamed Colija’s face as she got into the waiting car. She watched the house on Heightsdale Drive get further and further away. Leannah didn’t even show up. In the car Mr. Whey informed me Mr. Renfield does not allow pants as he handed me a paper it was typed not written it read . . .

    Ms. James

I do not allow women to wear pants in my household.

This will be corrected before you arrive here.

I do not allow loud music do not bring any with you.

The rest will be spoken when you arrive.

    Mr. Renfield.

I gave the note back to Mr. Whey and he said keep it. The driver took us to a Cainfield Outlet store. There were three in all two more in neighboring cities. Mr. Whey said, Get what you like and we will wait here.

The department store sold cloths, shoes, purses, and any other thing for the body and house. I turned to Mr. Whey and asked, Where are we going?

That’s right, you don’t know. Well you are taking the train to the township of Pierpoint Bluff; it gets cold, only now and then does it snow. Most of the year, it’s pleasant and warm. But you should get a coat just in case.

    Who is paying for it?

    Mr. Renfield.

    What am I to spend?

Get what you want and make sure you have enough cloths to last a year.

A small smile lit my face and his. I went to the men’s section and got five good thick pull over sweaters and three button up ones. I made sure that they were a couple of sizes to big. Then I went to the woman’s section with my size [16]. I got four sweater dresses that slipped over your head and two that buttoned from knee to neck. I got twenty-five dresses. Eight were knit material and four were long, dressy, but not flashy. The rest were zip, button up with a collar, or slip on. I got eight long nightgowns the thick kind and five long thin ones, ten different pair of colored socks and five packs of white socks and a pair of house shoes. Two pair of tennis shoes a pair of rust brown boots and a pair of black dress heels.

I felt like it was Christmas.

I got ten bras and panty sets, bands and clips for my hair a comb, brush set, and three pair of stockings because I didn’t wear panty hose [Hannah didn’t buy them]. There was a place with books so I got five thick novels. I got a brown leather jacket and a black warm coat. I got ink pens paper and notebooks. He smiled at me as we went to the check out. I spent six hundred and thirty nine dollars and seventy-seven cents.

    What’s so funny?

You are the fastest female shopper that I have ever seen.

It only took us [me] an hour and a half and we were back in the car. He asked was I hungry and I said yes. We stopped in a local diner and he said that my train doesn’t leave for an hour. We ate lunch and I knew he wanted to ask me something so I said, Ask me.

Mr. Whey smiled, It’s a nosey question.

They all are, but ask anyway.

What would make you promise five years of your life if you didn’t have to?

I finished the burger, It was the least that I could do for Hannah. She took me in. She owed the man a debt and they came to an agreement. He has money so there was nothing that Hannah could offer in payment but my services.

Mr. Whey took a deep breath Are you ready to go Ms. James?

As ready as I’ll ever be.

Renfield Cain stood in the study and wondered what did Tess get him into. Two years ago, she sent word for him to come right away and he had. It was raining and storming that night. Tess owned the house on the back of the fields. He walked in and she said, Your hand.

She cut his palm over a smoking pot and the thick silver liquid rippled inside and became a crystal view Ren looked at his likeness, he was sick, nearly blind thin and old, his beautiful hair had fallen out.

What do I need to do?

That’s when an attractive young woman came into what Tess called the crystal ripples. Renfield listened as Tess told him that he and his son’s lives desperately depended on the girl. Renfield had not dated a brown skin and the only one he had lain with was Tess, he felt that he would not only lay with her, but he wanted to. There was a time not to long ago when they were slaves. Ren didn’t have anything against people no matter what race; he just stuck to his own color (there were none his ‘kind’ around).

Tess refused say how they were going to need the young woman but she had never steered him wrong. She did say one more thing that night that caught Rens attention, that was if she is the one your sons would meet her first.

She too was a brown skin; Tess had been with him since he was young. She helped him raise his sons truth be told, or taradiddles as my dads use to call them. Now his son parties with em, Renfield smiled because his son had told him that was slang. Yesterday Tess said that the young woman, Colija, and his sons had met and now she is on her way to them by train. Renfield had the room that she would stay in cleaned and readied for her arrival. They were right by his, right where she needed to be.

In two days, she would be here.

The woman Hannah had been influence by Tess but Renfield didn’t know how. Tess had not left the land but once to his knowledge and she was gone a couple months longer then five years. Tess said that she needed a vacation. Renfield had laughed at that long and hard. Then he handed her five thousand dollars, she only took two thousand, and Ren told her to enjoy it. Tess told him indignantly that she would not. He actually loved her; Tess gave him a valuable friendship, kisses and hugs and sometimes her body.

Ren refills and lights his pipe and watches the gray/blue smoke circle up from his mouth and blend in the air. His own mother, Julia ran the streets spent money like water and was herself a known whore. When Ren found out that his wife Shunnel was sleeping with someone else he paid her off and she left in the middle of the night. He never heard from her again. He had women but at a hotel or for a weekend he called a trip. But never again in his house-his fathers house—that was also their fathers house.

Renfield sits down in the quiet dim room and takes a long deep drag from the marble pipe and thinks; Tess said even now some part of Colija is aware of them she just needs to be awakened.

The slow train ride is just what Colija needed, it would take a couple of days to clear her mind and get ready for what ever lay ahead. It couldn’t be as bad as the last thirteen years with Leland. The porter came around to the compartment and asked for her ticket. He punched it and said that dinner would be served in the main car in half an hour. Colija took out the paper and read the writing that belonged to Hannah and her self. It was a letter of agreement between them. It read . . .

As payment for services rendered I

Colija James give my written consent

to serve 5 years as a housemaid at

the place designated by Mrs. Hannah L Gilbert

to settle the debt owed by me.

The place and time will be known one week

prior to leaving the old premises.

It has a date, time, and legal jargon but it doesn’t matter anyway Colija owes Hannah and she would pay the debt to her. She folded the paper up and put it in her purse. The cloths alone were worth five months of her life easy. Besides, Colija knew that Hannah was getting her away from Leland and that’s what mattered the most.

Besides Colija didn’t have any family nor anywhere else to go.

When Leland took the jewelry from the little brown wench, he dressed and went to meet the lawyer whom requesting a meeting on a Sunday. That was odd. He had also ransacked Lee’s room and taken her money (379 dollars) and jewelry also, he would tell her that he was out and Colija did it. That brought a wide grin to his face. He had been angry and embarrassed when he found out that he couldn’t sell the house but that didn’t matter. Colija was finally gone and Leannah would have a nice little nest egg, which he would figure out how to get later on.

Right now, he was going to get what was his.

Leland was still young, money talks and he was walking with his share. Hannah on the other hand was eleven years older than him she was the best piece of tail Leland ever had and he needed a meal ticket. The reason that he stayed was the thousand a month she paid him to sleep with her. Leland laughed. The money had not been the only reason that he had married her. They didn’t have any delusions in their marriage. Hannah was a spinster with a homely face and she was still a virgin when he met her at the age of thirty-three. He had wooed her first to let her know what he was offering. The horse face woman wanted him bad and why not he was young good looking and charming.

The night they came to the agreement Leland was the one that said he wanted a marriage certificate. It was the sixth time that they had been together and Hannah had pleased him twice with her mouth. Leland had pleased Hannah the same also till she couldn’t take it any more (she had this put in the contract, once a month with out fail). The night before she signed the agreement Hannah said that she wanted a preview and Leland said that he wanted to see the doctor’s papers. Hannah got the papers he read them and smiled. Leland poured some liquor in a glass drank it, and then he turned off the lights and took Hannah roughly in every hole he could. He and Hannah were married the next week in a small ceremony, exactly three months from the day that they met.

Leland made a left into the parking lot. The accident is what made everything go wrong. The accident that was his fault drunk driving. Hannah had still deceived him. Leland pulled into the space and parked, he got out whistling to himself, he had served his time, and now he could move on. He patted the paper in his pocket and walked into the office.

Leannah decided not to go home when she left the hotel Sunday morning. She had a private appointment with her mother’s lawyer. She had been waiting for half an hour because she was early. She was thinking about Kemp and last night when she heard her fathers voice talking to the secretary.

    Go right in.

Leland’s face shown his surprise, Honey what are you doing here?

I have an appointment with moms lawyer.

He hugged her, How was the party?

    It was a blast daddy.

She smiled sadly, but Leland was too wrapped up in himself thinking this could put a damper on things when he needed to come back and get money from Leannah later on. When Jason Parson came into the room he said, "Come
