Tawny and Pearl were sisters who lived on an island in the middle of the Atlanta Ocean. Not only were they sisters, as well as being twin sisters, but they were known for their beauty, talent, and daring. Tawny and Pearl could sing in pitch-perfect harmony, and their voices were so beautiful that people said when they sang together they sounded like angels. But angels they were not if you asked their mother who said the girls had a knack for attracting trouble and seemed unhappy unless they were up to or in some sort of mischief.
Their mother said the older of the twins: Pearl, was the one who would start the mischief, and Tawny, who had difficulty making up her mind, always ended up following her. Except when they sang – Tawny, who was very charming would take the lead. They sang in all the churches around the island and sometimes they were asked to sing at special occasions like weddings, graduations, and holiday events. But their mother would not let the girls sing all the time especially during their summer vacation from school.
Although it was summer, Fay, the girls’ mother decided to let the girls sing the next day in church because it was the girls’ godmother’s ‘final’ wedding, or so she said. The godmother had been married three times already. Visiting her good friend, Ina Simons on the Saturday morning before the wedding, Fay was talking about the girls’ singing in church on the morrow. Fay told her friend she wanted her daughters to enjoy their summer vacation, stay out of trouble and not sing too much.
