There was once a great king of England called Uther Pendragon, who, with his fair wife Igraine, ruled the land in a time of troublesome noblemen and lords.

In the most troubled of times, they had a baby boy, and they named him Arthur. The king and queen were delighted, but King Uther’s advisor, the wise old wizard, Merlin, had a vision that the young heir’s life was in danger. He urged the king to keep his son’s birth a secret and send him away.

He then summoned all the lords and noblemen to London for a grand tournament and invited them to pull the sword from the stone.

Merlin knew, of course, that Sir Ector and his son Sir Kay would come—and bring young Arthur with them.

The tournament took place on New Year’s Day, and there was jousting, feasting, and dancing to look forward to—but the thing that got everyone excited was the thought of pulling
