About this ebook

It took a while, twelve years to be exact, to finally write the sequel to Malcom’s Measure. I’ve always kept an outline in my head despite getting requests for a sequel. It just took some time to get the fever back and pick up pen to paper and begin what has turned out to be Malcom! Malcom!
Malcom Crief’s story had to be continued and to see how his measure in life turned out. He was not perfect nor are any of us, but he met up as a caring and full of gumption character where he went and whoever he met with. His actions, and unexpected actions led his life. He learned and he failed, but he always kept with his measure in life with determination. He breathed, he hoped, and he believed in something of a higher power that helped his way, which was Grace.
More emotions, more situations, more tugs of the heart. Malcom! Malcom will deliver to the reader and be transferred to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

I am 6th generation North Carolinian. After a 38-year customer service airline career and a history degree from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a 36-year stint at War-Between-The States reenacting, (30thNCT/9th Pa.), I learned to combine the many life events I had to write about history and places with a 19th Century flair. I chose South Carolina as my historical jumping off point to write Malcom’ Measure and Malcom! Malcom!. I wrote a 20th century post 911 novel, Seven to One, and my memoirs, Flashback ages 2-19, and also published my mother’ lover letters, Letters 1943-1945, when I had the idea and time to do so. I feel my travel and life experiences have helped me have the inspiration to invite others to see just how small and diverse our world really with the accomplishment of my published works. My other interests are performing in a concert band at a local university and attending and/or being an extra in classical operas. I wish to leave a legacy for my grandchildren whom I enjoy watching grow up by the week. I enjoy most other genre of music, from: Blue Grass, Big Band, Oldies, and Gospel besides Classical music.

Malcom! Malcom! - Steven Preston Shaw

    SYNOPSIS FROM

    MALCOLM’S MEASURE

Malcom was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina in 1847. He experienced a strict home life growing up as a carpenter’s son on Divine Street along with his kind mother and older sister, Sally, three years his senior. Malcom knew a little about slavery but was not directly involved with the system and hardships until later in life. He did know about the free slave helper his dad employed in the family carpentry shop and mostly accepted James as part of the family. As a young teen his attention was not so much focused on the War Between the States, but rather what teens think about as the war was still very far away from his area of the State. He was typical as a teen to want to focus on young ladies and having fun and not being reconstructed by his father almost every other day for youthful failings or his father’s failings. The war did eventually make Malcom take notice as he was about draft or enlistment age just when he found a sweet heart. The one he always envisioned being with. War certainly changed both of them and more heart break for Malcom.

After the war events at home took Malcom away from his home once again and on to many misadventures and failings. As a result of one serious failing Malcom chose to leave his State and escape his consequences. Each year and everywhere he went, he took himself with him too. Not all experiences were sad and tragic for Malcom as he did find love once more. Divine intervention seemed to follow Malcom on many occasions while he grew up one does in life physically and emotionally. Just as he was about to give up on everything in life a woman he loved returned just as suddenly as she had left four years earlier back into his life.

The Rest of the Reunion with Mary Ellen

    from Malcom’s Measure Chapter 13.

I must really be dreaming! Thought Malcom as he continued to gaze into Mary Ellen’s eyes while clinging to her sweet lovely hands, firmly but tenderly. It has been so long and weary time since he had experienced such an emotion with her, or any other woman for that matter. He thought to himself.

Mary Ellen continued to reassure Malcom that she was back in his life again, though her eyes seemed to glance briefly elsewhere outside from the parlor they both were engaged with reuniting. The once successful town of Manumit, Malcom had a hand in starting, looked more like a foreboding back water village but she kept her wide smile and sparkling eyes back toward him and kept rolling her fingers around Malcom’s manly grip upon her as they clasped hands.

So, tell me more about why you think we should move to Seattle or San Francisco Malcom? Mary Ellen spoke enthusiastically, as if to break the lull between the couple’s interlude of touching and gazing upon each other. I will repeat, not even an earthquake could keep me from you to make a new life for us. Us!" she emphasized as she knew Malcom did not know about his son until she arrived in Manumit with her four-year- son at her side. She wanted Malcom to allow her son to be a part of his life as well as hers. She knew Malcom would need some time to get to know her son and for him to know his father.

Oh, certainly Mary Ellen! Malcom responded excitedly that broke his thoughts of wanting to just hold onto to Mary Ellen and keep the special feelings within that this reunion brought to him. Once we can work out details and plans for heading out, I just know we will be able to pick up the pieces and make our lives genuinely happy and fulfilling! He eagerly said. I would also love to get to know my son and for him to like me too!

That’s wonderful Malcom! Those are the words I would love to hear! Mary Ellen responded.

How can so many emotions pace back and forth inside me? I am grasping the hand and looking at the eyes of someone who left this ranch several years ago and now is back. Yes, back with my child, named after me to! Whoa. Did I think the word love just now? Yes, I did! How could I ever forget being with her that day? He moaned to himself.

"So dear Malcom. I am so happy I decided to return to you after both my needy parents departed this world. I just know I do truly want to make up to you those years of sorrow and sadness. I wish I was able to know what happened to you and the ranch after I and my family had to return to Wisconsin. At least when the newspaper article came about you and the founding of Manumit, I knew you were still in Texas. I just could not leave my parents then and seek you out. It would have been arduous to travel with my young son too. You must know the predicament I was in Malcom?

Malcom could see the sincerity in her eyes as she spoke. I wonder what it would be like to love again. With Mary Ellen? He thought and asked himself before giving her a response to what she had just spoken. Yes. Mary Ellen. I know the dilemma your family faced after they lost the ranch and decided to move back to your home State. I... I know you still were under your parent’s authority and you had to think of them first. Just think. I returned to the ranch from my long journey to seek funds to save the ranch for you but I was just too late. By then all of you were departed from the area including your sisters. How are they doing? He asked about making his remarks about what could have been.

She quickly responded with a mild choke in her throat, We lost our dream of owning that ranch and thought someone else owned it shortly after we moved away. Oh. Let’s not go back in the past, including my sisters Malcom. This is also such a change for me too. You know how difficult my mother could be? Let’s say she became utterly difficult after she found out I was expecting our child once I returned to Madison. I want us to be peaceful and look toward our future the next few days and ever. She announced to encourage both of them.

For sure Mary Ellen! I like that idea and believe we can make a go of it! He responded. I hope you will be comfortable with your accommodations for the time being. You can, for sure, rearrange and make this new place I built after you left how you want to fix it up. At least until we know what and where we will be in the near future. He thoughtfully shared with Mary Ellen.

Mary Ellen changed her then half smile to a no smile then to a big smile. I like that idea, Malcom! Yes. I like it very much and you have always been a helpful and courteous gentleman sir. I haven’t even thought about my accommodations. I thought there was a hotel in this place for me to stay in at least until we were properly married you know? I know we already have a family together in our son but my new Catholic upbringing I want to keep things all the while proper, don’t you see?"

Well, I get the picture Mary Ellen! Malcom responded to what he thought she was saying. There is no way to stay at our hotel now, that it has been turned into a seedy sort of unsafe place to stay since the town was overrun with wild cattlemen and rouges about the region. It is very nice you want to feel so moral with wanting to keep a good appearance here even if most folks around could care less. I’m not so sure we should wait so long to wed if we travel west which could take months to get there.

Now Malcom, dear! I didn’t know before I arrived what happened to this town. I am not looking for problems. I am here, I want us to make good decisions and make our lives work....

Sure Mary Ellen...me too! After all we did have some really good times when you and I were together at the ol ranch. Ha! I remember the new hot and cold shower I designed and built. Then one day when everyone including your folks were away on a buying mission before I even got to use the new shower in my barn quarters you had already got to use it first. I remember you feigned illness to keep from traveling with the others that day. He reminded her with a bit of lusty memory of sorts.

Okay my sweet Malcom! Yes. I remember that very well and I would not take that time back from you for anything. I was in my teens and tired of my strict up bringing so much I just wanted to do things a little different in my life, but only with you of course. I am older and feel I want to know I’m still the girl you fell in love with back then. It’s just for the boy. For our new life. A bond between you and I. You don’t have to answer me just now Malcom. I do love you and I want to make sure you love me. I know I hurt you so much but let’s see what love brought us. A son. I know love endures.

Yes, beautiful lady. He quickly replied as he pondered her statement that it was youth that brought about a child. How would she be now he suddenly asked himself but returned to what he wanted to respond to her with. Yes, ever more beautiful than when I first met you. You had just exited from that stage coach at the ranch when you and your family first arrived. We were both younger but our emotions were real. We certainly have grown up more and we reason differently with our emotions now. I want to say...I really feel right about what you said about a bond between us. Hold my hand again Mary Ellen!"

Mary Ellen pressed up closer than before to Malcom as she sighed a sweet sigh to his last remark to her. There was complete silence from both of them for several moments. Malcom could not help to think what it would be like to make love to Mary Ellen and to know now how she and he agreed to believe now.

It was a good thing that junior had fallen fast asleep in the back-room bed as soon as the trio entered the house earlier. Whew! Was the first sound he made after what seemed like many minutes.

Whew, what darling? Mary Ellen whispered.

Oh...I think I’m getting my blood warmer than usual just holding you He whispered back. We probably could not have had this moment with junior, our son, awake in this room, watching us, well, you know?

I really want to get to know him. Malcom said trying to change the subject of love making. Me. a papa!

Yes. You are a papa! She repeated as she placed her ungloved finger across Malcom’s lips.

Moments later Malcom brought up the subject of accommodation once more. Listen. I can let you stay here, but with some protection because I will ask Jaun, you remember him, don’t you? She nodded enthusiastically. Well, maybe he can find me a place to bunk at the ranch until we can figure out about that bond between us. Then we can figure a way to move to California without having to worry about separate quarters.

Mary Ellen gave a little snicker at his last statement. Oh, my Malcom! Whatever we do let’s make it work. We both have many skills to make things work. I really want our son to have good opportunities in life too. We have much to do!

Yes ma’am! Malcom agreed. Think about my idea of wedding here won’t ya? Wow! Gone four years, and back a short time and in talk of marrying soon! Juan has a lot of family here now is living on the ranch but I don’t feel I could get use to the close quarters there. I would prefer to get use to what anyone would say about us staying in this house together. Unmarried together. He quickly added. Juan may summon for a priest or pastor from Denton to come out here this way to get us hitched soon! Malcom said with affirmation and awe that he just said what he said.

I would prefer a Catholic priest but I believe if we have to get a pastor it won’t change our vows, will it? Mary Ellen answered giving an even bigger hug to Malcom again.

Malcom nodded as he wanted to say something else to reassure her. I know you said I didn’t have to reply to my feelings for you Mary Ellen...but...

But what Malcom? She asked with heavy expectations.

I love you, Mary Ellen! he spoke while looking straight into her eyes.

Mary Ellen squealed and felt this was a special time to give Malcom a kiss on his lips instead of hugs and hand squeezing. The couple simultaneously broke int moans and heavy breathing but the sounds of Malcom junior was heard in the next room as he called out for his mother after a long period of napping.

    CHAPTER 1

Mary Ellen’s statement of ...much to do...was probably an understatement regarding plans to unite with Malcom and help plan their upcoming wedding. The first item that needed to be taken care of was their accommodation situation. She had not expected to see what was the fast-growing village of Manumit to fall into disarray, not as quickly as it had. There wasn’t a decent lodging left to make room for proper living quarters. Cow hands, drifters and disreputable folk had all but changed the original place for what use to be a peace and family-oriented venture. Malcom and his diverse group of friends and neighbors had managed to create this growth not too long after the Larkins left back to Madison, Wisconsin. Mary Ellen could see where the ol ranch, her father had purchased a few years ago, to try and his hand at ranching which became a boon just after the Civil War. So many memories lingered in her mind. Most memories were rather painful at which she attempted to rid herself of.

It was nice the former ranch foreman was able to take possession of the ranch after Malcom ran it and turned it into a horse ranch from cattle ranch. Juan’s house and adjacent quarters were occupied with his large family, wife, brothers and in laws, all who came later once sent for by Juan.

Where am I supposed to stay? She asked Malcom again to be sure they understand each other on the matter.

I want you to stay here with me Mary Ellen. It is the best place around here to stay. I worked diligently to make it that way.

I know, I’m just sure how that will look to folks! she replied.

So, what do you think people will think! That me and you, who already have a child with, should not even be able to share a house together just because we had not been married yet? I agree, there are many such thoughts to that answer. I feel it is a safety idea to be sure for you as I could not let you stay here with our son by yourself considering there is no longer any real law here to be found. Do you think those who took over this place really care about what we think or what they think? I don’t relish the idea of staying in the run-down shack of a bunkhouse next to the ranch house. We could occupy two rooms at the new house. Once we are wed and, on our way west who cares about what one thinks of our arrangements? He asked assuredly.

Mary Ellen looked at Malcom and with somewhat blush as she held her slightly clinched knuckle to her mouth and nodded in agreement with her betrothed. So, we will have to find a place to recite our vows...

And a preacher too! Malcom added, ...but there are no more preachers around. Their flocks were either run off or just packed up and left. One of the small chapels we had has turned into a house of drifters now. Not even a justice of the peace here. Malcom was about to change his thought when Mary Ellen touched his arm and began to add her thoughts.

"Listen Malcom, we don’t have to have a preacher...we can ask Juan if he can send for a priest from a Spanish mission that he has contact with in Texas.

    I was about to say...

Could we locate a priest that Juan may be able to find for us? She asked finally getting to finish her sentence without Malcom interrupting again.

Oh. So, you really wouldn’t mind having a priest as your family were strict Protestants as I remember?

We haven’t had enough time to catch up with everything from our lives yet Malcom.

So, tell me Mary Ellen, why the change in beliefs?

Malcom, when I returned to Madison and found out I was with child, our son, what do you think all happened as a result? I will tell you. As you can expect, mother was livid and totally lost with me when she found out. I waited as long as I could. I didn’t mind telling papa, well, he was still disposed with depression and the failure of his dream ranch idea. He was also consumed with the substantial income loss and means of supporting his family anymore though he still had some pension from his former Madison city clerk position. I was so pleased he gave me the assurance I needed to continue with my onus of an unwed mother. I couldn’t even mention my condition to, my overbearing, nosy, intolerant sisters either. It wasn’t long of course before things were obvious. I began having sick days and... well you may know of something about such things?

Not really, but please continue Mary Ellen. Malcom quickly replied and wanted to know more about her change of denomination’s.

Malcom. I was truly as a loss as what to do when I finally told my mother. One would think I had drunk snake oil and was going to die and go to hell! Mother cried for days. She was so worried about what our family and friends would say. She even thought she might be asked to leave our Protestant church once they would see me with child. Instead of being able to share good news of being a grandmother and myself a mother, all I got was how much I had disappointed her and shamed our family. She said she spent her whole life to protect me from the evil she said I fell into, that I was now not much of a daughter, that I had a rebellious nature and did not pay attention to sermons of being chaste and listening to one’s parents.

So sorry Mary Ellen! Malcom to console her from what she had just sadly shared with him.

"Sorry. Yes. I was too. If you could imagine. I loved my mother and this was how she thought of me, a future mother to be. My father had at least found of wisdom and knowledge in his current condition to tell me about a Catholic Covent in Madison. I would be able to go to have our son. They would be able to take care of me and assist with the birthing. These nuns had been so good and kind to me. During my lengthy time there I began to learn what I needed to do to convert to Catholicism, since it seemed I would not be received at my church again.

So. You are a Catholic now? Malcom quickly asked.

Yes. It is so difficult from my other simple experience with going to church.

I’ll say! Malcom again quickly responded as he thought back from his visit at a Catholic church in Columbia when he was invited to attend once with his friend Erin.

I’m not the best practicing Catholic for sure being a recent convert and away from a nearby Catholic church Malcom, but I was taught to believe that my new faith is the true church. I know you were raised Presbyterian Malcom and I suppose now would be a good time to mention that I have expected to raise our son Catholic. I want you to be okay with that.!

So. ‘True Church’ you say? Well Mary Ellen, I thought we all are supposed to be Christians. I don’t have much to say about all the rituals one goes through within the Catholic Church, I do believe it is about how our Lord sees our hearts and wants to take care of us. You have already, with good reason, decided to raise our son Catholic. That will be fine with me.

Oh Malcom! That does give me a new confidence that our union will work out so well. Now that you better understand that why I am very pleased with finding a priest for our wedding. I cannot wait to see through all the plans that have to be fulfilled to make it happen.

Yes, my love. Lots of plans. First, you need to get a lot of rest after your long journey and regain enough strength for these plans. I will prepare a meal for my family and meet up with Jaun as soon as I can make it over to the ranch to help make plans happen.

If I know anyone who can make it happen then that person is you, Malcom! Mary Ellen excitedly responded as she held both her arms around Malcom’s left arm.

The decision to share Malcom’s house with Mary Ellen and his son in Manumit, or what it used to be called which was renamed Ranger’s Pike now, went as well with ease as Mary Ellen could hope it would. Malcom already felt it would work out. He was confident the new day would be a relaxed day for all and decided to saddle up his horse and rented another but gentle horse from the stable for Mary Ellen. His son rode up front near the saddle horn on his father’s horse, though it took some coaxing to convince the son it would be okay to ride with the father he only recently met. The three rode out slowly out of the town whose name was changed by Texas Rangers. It didn’t seem right now anymore to Malcom. It wasn’t much for freedom as what the original name used to represent. Malcom could not help noticing the looks and stares he saw from the left-over town folk who decided to stay on and the new comers who actually took over the town. He knew they were not really staring at him as they were at his lovely Mary Ellen. If that wasn’t enough to keep Malcom concerned, he had to try and calm his son who had never ridden on a horse. Malcom Jr. Squirmed and winced with each jolt from the horse canter.

It will be okay son. Malcom tried to reassure but at the same time kept a watchful eye on Mary Ellen’s attempt to ride side saddle on her mount. She held on tight to the reins and saddle horn. It had been some while since she had ridden a horse and it was not side saddle then.

We are almost at the ranch yall! You will be back on terra firma before you know it. He assured. That is land to you. He laughed.

You know I never got into riding horses that much when I was at this ranch Malcom! I can still smell the odor of cattle coming from that ol coral at the barn.

Me too, but it will be the smell of horses now and an even larger coral. Malcom said as he prepared her for what she would see and smell soon.

As they rode further onto the ranch property, they could see activity by the coral, activity in the large garden plot and goings on by the veranda of the ranch house. Juan was not visible to Malcom at this time but continued toward the house to at least seek his whereabouts. Mary Ellen began to feel nostalgic and sad at the same time as this was the first time, she had seen what use to be her abode just a few years ago.

Olla! Como esta Madre Dias! Malcom said to the older lady sitting on the veranda in the middle of her chore.

Olla! She replied with a big smile.

Malcom kept peering to see if Jaun would walk or ride up at any moment. What he could make out from the family member was that he was out on the range and would be expected to return before long. He dismounted and gently placed his son on the boy’s two good feet before carefully aiding his gal off her horse, but he added a little more fun as he added a squeeze or two to her ribs to which she squealed with embarrassment in response as she looked over at the old lady on the veranda.

Now sir. We are in the presence of others! She reminded him.

A little senorita and younger senor who were on the shaded veranda finally came out closer to where Jr. Was standing and basically stared at Malcom’s son to which Jr. Stared right back at them. The staring match was soon over as spontaneously the three began to point and giggle at each other and before long Juan’s children wanted to play with little Malcom who looked over at his mother. He looked as if it was okay or as if he should ask permission to play. Everything at the moment was strange for him. The other children also had their own silent language and made the best of their meet up with Junior. The began to run around the yard and soon there were three running and laughing together.

Juan’s mother got up and went back inside the ranch house and soon returned with Jaun’s wife. She was so happy to see Malcom and meet Mary Ellen, whom she had not met before. She was, however; able to explain that she would prepare refreshments and some tacos to enjoy for everyone. Malcom let her know that he and Mary Ellen would like to walk around the property a little bit whilst the chore of preparing the midday dinner began to get into progress.

"Do you remember this well Mary Ellen?

How could I not remember this meeting spot Malcom? She quickly answered. It was the first time you and I were actually able to be near and speak to each other since mom made the rules that none of the ranch hands were allowed to fraternize with her daughters. I knew there was something special then and first when you made yourself known to my father in having him hire you as an extra ranch hand. Your argument of how much service you would and had already contributed before we arrive was very convincing. I know I was impressed for sure!

I also remember how you had a good hand at coaxing your father to override your mother and allow me to be the extra hand at this ol ranch even though his budget did not seem to be in place for another worker.

Mary Ellen and Malcom strolled over to the barn hand in hand. I can’t believe it was your idea and skill that constructed this barn, Malcom. When you added the forge and your own private quarters, running water, and your own private plumbing and indoor.... well, you know? Oh! And that incredible shower heated from pipes you ran off from the forge for hot water. What a luxury it was sir!

The couple opened the barn door and entered. The walked by the forge area that led to the private room Malcom made for himself when not on cattle drives. It was apparent now someone else lived in these quarters now but it wasn’t the same as it used to be when Malcom had a role over it. Yes. There is that river rock lined shower stall. Who could ever forget that wool down bed you made? She also pointed out.

Both stayed briefly and looked at that bed with the antlered head board. Yes, my dear. How could we ever forget that bed? Malcom answered. It all started because you wanted to use my shower. I had not even had a chance to use it before you snuck in my quarters while I was checking on the forge in the barn. You took advantage of the shower. You used my hot water you did!

Their romantic reminiscing thoughts quickly faded when a Negro man walked in and surprised them.

What hot water? He loudly asked them. As soon as he asked them, he saw that it was Malcom and let out a big grin to his old acquaintance. He was one of the Buffalo soldiers who came to settle in Manumit. Malcom actually trained him how to run a forge after Malcom had too many irons to deal with besides smithing.

We were just looking around Lucas. Sorry to intrude on your abode. Lucas was not really looking or listening as he did not know who the lovely woman standing behind Malcom was? Oh. Sorry. Let me introduce Mary Ellen. We will be getting married soon. Malcom explained to Lucas.

Why dat is mighty nice for you two! Lucas responded with excitement.

We are expected back at the house soon. Malcom said and made his good byes to Lucas

By the time the couple gathered up their son to enter the house to eat Juan and two other riders approached the ranch house. Might have known you would show up in time for chow time Juan! Malcom yelled out in jest.

Amigo! What wonderful news! So now congratulation to both of you! Juan announced as he soon was included on the news of the upcoming wedding for Malcom and Mary Ellen. I always thought you two would be so good together! You didn’t think I noticed how you were attracted to each other back in the day did you? We have a celebration today for sure. You honor me wanting me to have the wedding at my ranchero, or your old ranch too Malcom. Malcom gave a small cough to make sure Jaun added one more person to the list of past ranch owners. Si! For sure and the former family owners too! Juan added quickly. Now we make wonderful plans for your wedding fiesta...but now we eat!"

Malcom and Mary Ellen were still in awe at all the fuss and plans that lay ahead of them. "So. You like my son, little Malcom, hey Jaun?

What do you mean I like? He will become the best ring bearer in all of Texas he will!

Well. Just all of North Texas will be fine with us Jaun. Mary Ellen replied. He is still young and really doesn’t understand what is all going on just now. I brought him away from his former surroundings, introduced him to his father for the first time, and now my son will be part of Malcom’s and my wedding at a place I thought I would never see again!

Oh, he will be fine! Juan said to reassure the future bride.

Malcom and Mary Ellen remained mute at that point while they tried to take in all that was happening to themselves while the excitement continued during their visit. Malcom finally explained to Jaun that he thought today would be a day of socializing then soon everyone would sit down to discuss wedding plans and the couple’s future. Juan took it sadly when Malcom shared that he and his family would head west to San Fransico to start a new life once the marriage ceremony was over. Malcom would need to gather up assets he had left from the Manumit venture and figure a way to pack up what he could bring and muster up strength for the arduous journey to California. Before that could happen, he was hoping it would not take too long before Juan could summon a priest from the nearest mission to preside over the wedding.

What am I going to do for a wedding trousseau? I could wed in one of my finer dresses I brought with me, but I never thought about a special dress to be wed in at the time I was packing my things to journey back here. I was only thinking about seeing you Malcom and having you meet your son.

Let me ask Jaun about what the women of his family can do. Malcom suggested. I believe we still have a fine seamstress who is in town, but most of her work now is patching up trousers, vests and socks for the cattlemen and rest of the men who now reside here. She also did a smart thing when she salvaged most the good material from Lee Xiang’s clothing store that was damaged by our present intruders.

Who is that? What happened? Mary Ellen asked surprised at what she had just heard about the China man’s shop.

I am sure I will be taken back when I tell you he was a China man I met when I first went to San Franciso to try to obtain the deed from the bank who then owned your ranch. Lee was a tailor who offered to make me a nice suit in one day, just in time before I went to talk with bank people. He was hard on his luck, hounded and burdened at every turn. When I paid him for his work, I invited him to come out to Manumit to start a new life here. I even made sure he had travel expenses when he was ready to take the journey east. A year later, there he was, with his cousins and nieces in tow, ready to make a new life here. Life was good as he had: tailor shop, piece good store, and laundry all in the same location as the town began to come into being. But his burdens continued as the drovers and guardian rangers moved in and wanted to do what they wanted to do without anyone trying to interfere. Eventually Lee had enough and packed up what he could and said he would make his way to Vancouver, Canada. I sure hope he is okay today, if he made it there. I think we solved your wedding dress problem my dear.

What an answer to my question Malcom! I glad I didn’t ask how money grows on trees. Oh, I feel that things are going to work out too my problem-solving fiancé’. I am very interested in seeing what the material looks like and what sort of design we will come up with. She said with new interest in her situation.

At least you won’t have to wear one of those large hoop dresses that have are a big waste of material and space! Malcom teased. I want that extra space to make you closer to me at the altar. He laughed.

We will see about you, young man! She added laughing as well.

Town folk began to add their part for a fine time and a needed event for all to enjoy. Well, at least most, not the ruffian types in town. Mary Ellen met with wedding planners throughout the next week. She discussed with mostly Jaun’s family the best way she could not knowing any Spanish. Usually, Juan had to take time from his ranch duties to make sure everyone knew what was agreed upon to avoid any embarrassing understandings. They had to discuss: decorations, food and refreshments, time of service, accommodation for the Misson priest who needed a safe place to stay until his mission was through at the wedding.

One day after having her gown fitting Mary Ellen was alone in town while she noticed some undesirable types in town eyeing at her. At one point, one of the men came over and tipped his hat and asked if he could help carry her packages. Mary Ellen could smell alcohol on his breath and she could not help notice the odor on his soiled clothing as well. He was unshaven and ragged. Mary Ellen politely said, Thank you, no. I can manage just fine Mister! She took a step or two around this bloke so she could get back to her house at the end of town. A second man emerged from the saloon doorway, equally unkept as the first man. Aw, you sure you don’t need any help lady? he grunted.

Mary Ellen began to feel very nervous over the situation now, the predicament she was in with this man. She had not been this nervous since the time Comanche warriors came to her father’s ranch at the time and asked for some of his cattle to feed their tribe. That was a tense situation enough then. Her instinct now was to try to get to her house as soon as she could get some distance from these scary cowpokes. My husband is at my house and will be about to make sure at managing my bundles. She calmly announced to stave off the intruding men near her.

Home, is he? The first man scoffed. Well, I done seen him ride off with that boy of yours and another feller.

Well maybe that is the other beau that’s waiting up for her at her house. The second man added with a big laugh.

It wasn’t too long before other wild looking men came out of the saloon she had just passed. They began to make unsuitable comments toward her scaring her even more so than she already was. She wished she had her pistol with her. It was the one she learned how to shoot after the Indian incidents from the ranch days. Now there were four men who walked with longer strides to catch up with Mary Ellen. One of them actually got close enough to reach out and place his hands on her arms. Mary Ellen dropped one of the small packages and screamed as she attempted to hold on to the larger container.

Oh, come on lady. We just want to celebrate that their wedding with you, since we weren’t invited. all we want to do is be a part of this shindig and get our wedding kisses that comes to us!

The second man now had his arm around her shoulder and offered her a drink of whisky from the bottle he produced and put in front of her lips. Mary Ellen screamed again, louder this time to no avail. There was no one coming to her aid. The now emboldened rogues grabbed one of her packages and tore into the parcel.

Looky here, would you? The third man yelled out as he held up a newly purchased under slip. Let us see you in this dainty whatchamacallit! He demanded.

No! No! Go away! That is mine! Give it back! She screamed and demanded with tears in her eyes.

Go away she said. laughed the man holding her unpackaged slip. Well, it looks like it belongs to me now.

You sure could be plum purty in that missy! The first man blurted.

Mary Ellen managed to break away from the grip on her and made a blazing dash toward the steps of her house, while the man with her purloined slip managed to slip it around his jeans and gun belt. He danced in the street and behaved like a lunatic while the other three ambled as they took sips from their shared bottle to follow her toward her steps.

We just want our wedding kiss lady! one said. No. Heck no! I want more than a kiss. I’m ready for wedding night! With me and her The first man yelled with malicious intent.

Mary Ellen had had enough and was able to compose herself long enough to turn around and quickly pull the first man’s pistol from his holster. She pulled back the hammer and aimed for his face.

Whoa, lady! I was just a kidding. Now take it easy before someone gets hurt, ya hear? He said as he quickly became sober at that somber moment that his life may just about to pass away. A gun, his own gun, could be the dispatching weapon and cause some damage at any moment.

I meant it! Now get off my property and get away from here or you will regret it! She yelled.

The third man finally quit dancing and slowly got out of Mary Ellen’s new slip. Now, how are you going to make us leave? Just one frail little lady and the four of us strong men. Here’s your snooty slip back! He said as he flung in onto the lawn.

I said get off my porch and property! I mean it! She said as the first man stepped away from the pistol aimed at his face and stepped backwards several steps.

Make us leave! The third man threatened with a yell toward the lady with the pistol.

Mary Ellen quickly pointed the pistol at him and fired. Shot his hat off onto the dirt below him. She quickly pulled the gun hammer back, aimed and ready to shoot again at anyone who came near her.

Her accosters regrouped as four and made threats at her. You can’t tell us what to do! The second man yelled. I want my firearm back ya hear, or...

Or what? was a new voice from a different direction that came around Mary Ellen’s house. It was Lucas the Smith who held a double-barreled shot gun now at the four intruders.

There’s still only two of you and four of us. Responded the third man.

Wait a minute Bart...as I see it, she has your gun and she seems to know how to use it. As the third man knew, after picking up his freshly shot up cowboy hat.

Okay mister. You want to see what I can do with your hat...how would you like for me take off your side burns instead? Mary Ellen announced with more gumption as it seemed the tide finally turned in her favor.

It only took a few seconds when the fourth trouble maker decided he had enough fun for one day and began to head back to town and call it an afternoon.

But she still has my pistol! exclaimed the first hombre.

Oh, shut up you Ol goat! Said the third man. She could have had your head too. What will you do without your head now? You can get another pistol. Another head? I doubt it. You don’t have much inside the one you got anyway.

Who you calling an Ol goat? The man without his pistol yelled back.

Just wait till I get that Ol darky for interrupting our fun! announced the fourth dude that ended the conversations.

By the time those terrible men were far enough away and could no longer be heard conversing, Mary Ellen lowered the pistol and slowly slumped to the porch floor. Lucas thought she was hurt and quickly lowered his shot gun and ran around the side of her house to the front steps.

You okay Missy? Good thing I showed up from the ranch when I’s did! You sho would been in a heap of trouble then! Lucas bellowed out with exasperation.

Oh, dear God! Oh, dear God! were the only words she could say in response.

I was just over here to make new door bolts for da house. Good thing I did come when I did! After Lucas figured Mary Ellen was not hurt but just in a bit of shock he ran over to where her opened package was and daintily tried to replace her slip back into the original wrappings. Here Missy. I do believe dem folks messed with your ah, things!

Mary Ellen, now better composed as one could expect, saw Lucus lay down that package next to the other package she managed to make it home with. No! I do not want that one! No! I want it buried never to be seen or used by anyone including myself!" She blurted out to Lucus, hero of the day.

It took some calming and concern for Malcom to tend to his betrothed after he finally returned from helping Juan do some ranching chores on the range to earn some extra money to help pay for the wedding and their travel to California. He thought taking his son along would free up Mary Ellen to get items she needed to do without having to keep up with junior. He felt responsible for not thinking he probably should have seen to her safety while he was away. After her ordeal he could not think of anything else than being extremely irritable at what happened and could have happened. Oh, if Lucus Beason had not been on his way to work on that project I asked him to complete...!"

I was not so sure I was going to be able to pull the trigger on that ol heavy shooting iron! She gasped as she repeated herself over and over a few times.

"I know dear! It seems to me I will have to be looking for a more suitable fire arm for you that you can use readily without worry of the effectiveness. From what Lucas told me you seemed to have managed that weapon very well despite your doubts.

Malcom. Do you really think I will be in another situation like that again? I would go insane should I were to know my life would always be at risk!

Malcom sure did not want to think about another occurrence to be waiting for his gal. In the meantime, he would have to take better measures and take charge of both she and his son’s safety. Now, there were stronger door latches at each entrance to their house and it was important to make sure he or a reliable friend from Juan’s ranch stay close by lending protection for his family. It seemed like a solution; however, Malcom knew that there were many scoundrels about in Manumit. He didn’t try to call the town Ranger Pike but anyone of them could be the next ones to try to accost his wife to be. There were enough important items to tend to with the wedding and he kept in mind that more trouble could lurk in the near future as long as they remained in town.

The German Brewmeister in town was one of the few who decided to stay on in town after the cow poke ruffians and rangers took over their peaceful little town. He figured there could be a good living still making wheat beer for the two original saloons and two new watering holes for the thirsty lot. The maker had been approached by Malcom to help be a part of the upcoming festivities. Malcom also got an earful from the German fella as he heard many conversations from patrons while he poured mugs of beer to customers.

Ja! Oh, I heard mit meine own ears!" He exclaimed

What did you hear man? Malcom asked about such important news.

"Der men das mit your frau...wife.... ich... I heard dem talking wen ich.... Ich war der in saloon!

    "Slow down Gunter! What men?

"Oh, for sure dem talking will make trouble at wedding. Ach! One man he says is still very angry mit die Mary Ellen...for taking his pistol from him."

"So. Go on mein Herr!" Malcom prodded Gunter.

"Oh. Sie ist so gut, mein Herr. Ha." Gunter laughed as he almost is always laughing.

Come on now! What are they planning?

"Okay. I vill tell you vat they planning. They vill attack wedding party and shoot everywhere to scare and stop wedding! Ja. Das is vat Gunter heard men say!"

Oh, they did, did they? Malcolm quickly replied as he lurched forward to look out the window toward town. He was angry and angrier at not really knowing how he or anybody else could stop such a mob of mad marauders on his matrimony day. Listen here Gunter. You must not tell anyone else about what you heard from those men at the saloon, about wanting to make mayhem out of my wedding day. Just be sure you have the kegs of beer cooled enough and delivered to the ranch on time. Do you hear me sir?"

"Sure, sure! Gunter tell no one, to no one!! I know nothing Malcom! He assuredly answered shaking his head side to side.

Malcom had to do some serious thinking about what he could to prevent such a ruinous attack at his and Mary Ellen’s wedding. He was so relieved that she was not in earshot that day Gunter spilled the beans to him about those rouges revenge plans. Even after conversing with Juan, they both concluded it would take a small army to try and prevent such a fiasco to occur.

Not one of us must be harmed! We may even have to cancel our plans for the ceremony at the ranch. Maybe we will have to wait and move to a safer location to wed. I think there still some overbearing Rangers that linger in town. Malcom thought to himself. "That’s it! That is my only solution. Yes. I will appeal to those Rangers to help me resolve my dilemma of having a safe nuptial. I’ll use my Crief gift of persuasion even on those troublesome, tenacious Texans.

Malcom strode onto the plank walkway after he dismounted from his horse in front of the former jail. A couple of Rangers sat on the chairs and watched curiously as Malcom boldly approached. I want to talk to your head Ranger man! He said with importance in his voice.

Our head Ranger? barked the nearest man to Malcom who had been using a formidable looking sharp knife to whittle away at a strip of wood. Ha! What business do you have with him?

Well, I suppose you are not the head Ranger mister. I recon a head Ranger would be proud enough to admit he was a head Ranger and to see what a good citizen from town wanted. Yes. It ain’t you I see.

Now you watch what you are saying! the man sitting
