PROLOGUE
Otters, Girls, and Witches
The story begins one hot summer’s day, on a Scottish country estate. The three MacGregor sisters— Susy, Marjory, and Bunty—are running wild and free. Their father is hard at work on this large estate, and their mother is in a maternity unit having their baby brother.
The girls are frolicking in a stream, screaming, splashing, and having a whale of a time, when suddenly they are confronted by an old witch emerging from the pine trees. The girls’ boisterous behaviour has rattled her nerves. She is furious and scolds them with her sharp tongue. The girls get the fright of their lives. It turns out she belongs to a coven of thirteen witches who live deep behind the waterfall, close to where the girls are playing. The witches are all riled by the noise and come out in force!
After this terrifying incident, the girls seem to buck up their ideas, and start visiting the local library every Saturday morning. And now they have their little brother, Toby, to busy themselves looking after with their mother. The three reformed girls soften the hearts of the coven. The thirteen witches regret ever being angry with the girls simply for having fun.
