TO UNDERSTAND HELEN
39113.pngTo understand Helen is to understand life and the meaning of love and devotion. For Helen is life with its highs and its lows and its promise of things yet unknown. To see Helen’s face is to instantly know why men constantly speak of her beauty. For Helen possesses the features upon which our standards of beauty are structured. To stand close to her and observe Helen’s highly erotic and flawlessly chiseled physique, and to know every ounce of her figure is real, tends to leave her admirers in awe. For Helen possesses a figure the great ancient sculptures could only imagine–her body is slender and perfectly formed from the top of her head to her toes. To look, and to gaze into Helen’s eternally flowing, aquatic, mysterious eyes, is to know in the flash of an instant the structure and ultimate meaning of time. For locked in the lingering radiant glow of her deep and bewitching, illuminous eyes, there exists the elusive perpetual promise of heaven right here on the Earth. To kiss Helens lips and to make love to her, is to sip and to drink from the fountain of love. For Helen possesses the power to literally drain every ounce of one’s passion.
However, my Helen, this woman I worship, completely destroyed my illusions of life, when, right out of the blue, she informed me today, she emphatically wants a divorce.
It is nothing you’ve done or you have not done–I just feel that the marriage is over, she said.
Then I take it there’s no other man? I inquired.
No, of course there is no other man,
Helen said.
But there must be some logical reason,
I said.
Intuition,
she ordered her one-word reply.
Well, I know that it’s not economics, I said, for I’ve given you all that a woman could want. First, I bought you this house, then your own private car, even offered to hire you your own private maid. And you cannot complain that your life’s unfulfilled when you’ve got two adorable children like ours. Or perhaps you have come to believe that I’m no longer measuring up in my role as a man.
You can’t blame every problem on sex,
Helen said.
Isn’t sex why most marriages break up these days? Anyway, I will not let you flee with Nathaniel and John without making one hell of a fight.
But I never intended to flee with the kids, nor a red cent of your alimony,
she said. You have sheltered, protected and cuddled me, so you don’t think that I’m able to stand on my own. I’m not looking for someone to take care of me. I believe that I’m able to do that myself.
"So, that’s it, you would like a career of your own? If that’s all that you are after, I will not object.
It’s much deeper than that. It’s my own life I want, and apparently I cannot have it with you.
To understand Helen, to know why she’s planning to throw away all that a woman could want, completely eludes my mere masculine powers to make heads or tails of the feminine mind. For I have fought hard on my job, sweated ounces of blood to construct her a huge pedestal. Yet you’d think I’d been forging a cast-iron prison, complete with a cell and a ball and a chain. To understand why I selected this beautiful goddess and no other woman will do, one must know the impossible standards that I have erected through most of my turbulent life. For all that I have is the highest of class, from my custom-made cars to my tailor-made suits. And the lecherous envy in men’s eyes when I’m out on the town with my beautiful bride, reinforces my view that my taste is as classy with women as with practically everything else. So, imagine the joy and in the comfort in knowing that Helen is my wife and my love alone–the euphoric feeling that I hold the whole of the vast universe in the palm of my hand.
To understand why she would walk out on someone like me who could give her the sun and the moon, one must master the ultimate meaning of chance and the probable fall of the dice. For, just yesterday, if you would have told me she would leave for no logical reason at all, but a passionate gut intuition of hers, I suppose I would simply have laughed. To understand Helen is to understand life and the meaning of love and devotion. For Helen is life with its highs and its lows and its promise of things yet unknown.
