About this ebook

The Sold Nation is a fictional story based on the ongoing realty in the contemporary Ethiopia. The novel begins with the students at Addis Ababa university at their Social Science Compass and ends in the great hall of the national palace of the country.

The Sold Nation exhibits the trying struggle of the students of the said university and some of their professors to help the country get rid of the “so-called” identity politics, which has messed up the texture of the country as a united sovereign nation.

The characters along with their respective settings are well constructed. They represent the various colors and odors of the nation and the aspiration of its citizens for the period the identity-based politics have been ruling the nation. The various conflicts between and among the characters are very well constructed.

The plot is so strong and tense. It is very involving. It could simply capture the attention of the readers and drive them all the way to the end at one sitting. The language is attractive and enchanting to the mind. It is full of figurative speeches, well written expressions.

This novel is a must to read novel, if you would like to apprehend the suffrage that the said politics has wedged on the citizens of Ethiopia. It is a worth reading.

    A Chilly Dawn

I t is a chilly dawn to me. The weather is cold. It is almost frosting. Things change a lot. The weather is too stiff. The politics runs above the law. Human moral has tumbled. Abhorrence is flourishing. Wrong and right have mixed up. I am not sure if this country makes it together again. It will fail apart. And if it does the whole world will do the same. The existence of this nation matters a lot to the rest of the world. It is the cradle of mankind. It will also be the conclusion of it. Said Dr. John Joseph.

Hope is failing. Faith is waning. Truth is abandoned. Humanity is diminishing. The most honorable man is evacuating from himself. He is relinquishing both in the flesh and in the spirit. We need restoration. We need resurgence. We, as a nation, should be able to find out our way back to our courtesy. Somebody has to intercede for this nation. Dr. John added, and then silence took over the show.

In the midst of this deep tranquility a certain shallow voice surfaced out. What do you see Dr. John? his mind asked him after walking him through a jungle of bodies scattered all over the country.

    Human bodies! He answered.

You have seen it right! The country of integrity has now become a state of shame. It is deeply baptized by the blood of its own citizens. Killing is widespread. They slay far and wide. They murder for every reason. Disorder is the order of the country. The most esteemed Amhara is beheaded unrestrainedly by its own fellow brothers for putting the country together as a sovereign free state.

He got drenched in his own sweat. He got repressed deep inside his own thought trying to figure out the future of his nation. Where are we going with this identity politics of abhorrence? What are we up to blooming fabricated stories about our own brothers? Can hatred build a nation? Can deceit bring about the honor of citizens? Dr. John Joseph questioned himself.

The great majority of his students appreciate Dr. John Joseph for his plucky stand, precision and intellectualism. For them, he is the best of all of the professors staked at AAU. He speaks his heart open and clear. He does what is right, in the right time, and the right way.

They call him The man earnest to himself. Of course, he has a strong veracity to himself. It is too late. You can’t take things to square one and work out the fate of this great nation, where the citizens don’t stand in equal footing to make decisions, whatsoever.

No, it is not too late. I can always jump in and inspire the endangerment of this autocratic, disgusting, and prejudiced politics. I have to do so before it pulls apart the country to pieces. I have to get on preaching love, forgiveness, tolerance and respect, instead.

Dr. John Joseph told his inside. It was a kind of meeting which took place in the nucleus of his mind; a brief discussion between him and his spirit. They usually chat over matters that matter the most to them. At times it is like a big forum, where quite a lot of people come together to discuss the fate of this beautiful nation suffering from the regional pious sway.

The spirit that has absorbed the Christianity of the Middle East is now about to swallow all the remnants in the horn. Said Dr. John Joseph.

I totally agree with you, we are few steps before our dooms day, if we are not able to get rid of this identity based politics at the earliest. His inside responded.

Can we get rid of it? Dr. John Joseph asked his most inner man. The dialog went sincere between them. They go along very well.

Latter, in this summit Cina Mathew and his mother Beza Bekel along with Prof. Ali Suliman, Hana John, and his other students joined the meeting. Each one of his university students seem to represent every single citizen from all walk of life across the nation. It was like a parliamentary meeting. Everyone has equal say, regardless.

Cina Mathew wanted Dr. John Joseph not to be involved in anything. She is tired of the so-called identity politics. After all, she is not sure if there could be any political realm based on identity. She wants to live her life free and joyful and die her death peacefully. For her life has no purpose. It is a futile practice of living. However, she likes to take it with her most loving man Dr. John Joseph. She loves him as much as she does her own life.

Prof. Ali Suliman is indifferent. He doesn’t seem to go along with his friend. First of all, he doesn’t believe in the secular world. He is supper religious, almost a kind of deep-seated believer. His studies in Islamic Literature has made him even muted from the rest of the jurisdiction. For him this world is not real. It is a reflection of an invisible world form where man has come and to where he will have to go. Hence, everyone must come in one accord to his creator, willy-nilly.

Cina Mathew and all the rest of her friends are much concerned about their country. They want to keep it safe and strong by its citizens, to its citizens, and for its citizens. They detest ethnic politics. Hence, they all are happy to work hand-in-glove with Dr. John Joseph and take action both in the imperceptible and physical world to the best of their beloved country and its citizens.

They have already been organized as small political cells all over the face of the nation. They plan and work. They also fight and combat. They all are aware of the fact that this is a sort of a pious war concealed in the skins of ethnicity. Some of them have a rich empathetic knowledge as to the role Prof. Ali Suliman is playing in this struggle. He is such a spider. He has built a sort of obscured network all over his region. He has already infiltrated the government structure. Some of his hands are among the top officials of the country.

Cina Mathew is a northern brown sprit. She is like a trailing cloud of glory. Dr. John Joseph has hosted her in his heart since his childhood. She lives in him as he does in hers. She is a chocolate star that swiftness his life as he faces the bitter side of it.

She always shines over the darkest part of his life. She is a woman of a very good-looking oval face with a straight nose crossing it in the middle just above her love calling lips. Her black and bouncing hair is always dancing over her head as she moves around her presence.

Her clear eyes are like two different celestial bodies revolving around her elliptical face. Her mind is sharp and prompt. She is fast learner. She likes reading. She is a kind of book worm. She spends of her time with characters that actual human beings. She loves them better for they never change with time.

Beza Bekele is the biological mother of Dr. John Joseph. She is as great as the world. Love emanates from her. She is such a stunning golden-brown Godot that every child of this universe has to adore and respect. She is the milieu. We all live in her. She has nurtured Dr. John Joseph the best. She has given a big vision to which has devoted the whole of his life. He is such an ambitious man. He wants to be all over and at one go. Yet, he is very well planned and technically skillful. For him, the sky is the limit.

Prof. Ali Suliman is Dr. John’s friend, at least overtly. They are well convoluted in the spirit. Though, they have no ethnic relation, they spend most of their time together but in despising conversation. Ali wants to invade John. He has shown him the benefits of being Islam, the religion of peace and concord.

Dr. John Joseph wants to remain as he has been, a firm and solid abettor of his country and its citizens, without affecting the interest of his friend Prof Ali Suliman. He had been grown in the Coptic Orthodox church as Dicken. He is humble, courteous and reverential. He is very congenial and affable.

Dr. John Joseph and Prof. Ali Suliman talk to each other in Amharic. For them language is a tool. They use it for communication sake. It is not a mark of identity. As a matter of fact, Dr. John tries to express himself in Afan-Oromo, but he is not as fluent as he wanted to be. He likes learning languages.

Even though, Dr. John Joseph and Prof. Ali Suliman knew each other for quite a long time, they do not go along. They keep fighting over a spited milk. They both want to put up the country in order but in ostensibly unlike manner.

Prof. Ali Suliman is a reconstructionist. He wants to put the country apart first before he builds it again in his new order. However, nobody has an idea as to what this new order might look like, except very few inn his network that work in dark with him. Dr. John Joseph, on the other hand, wants to build up on what is already there.

In other words, one clandestinely is pushy for escalating his credence even by putting the gun on the head of others, while the other one tends to let everybody live his life the way he likes but under law and in order; so that this by itself would make a pattern of harmony which could put the country a home of range cultures in their own accord.

Dr. John Joseph believes in himself and his earnestness. He makes himself as candid and blunt as possible to all his colleges and friends. He also believes in his team. Hana John, the ringleader, and the rest of his students have a strong commitment to him. His idea has brought them home.

He always says to his team Man should not be slaughtered like a lambs. He should not be burnt alive. He must not be killed by his own fellow brothers. We should all be united to reverse this situation. We must happen to be big host of change that would work to bring man back to his honor and his world to order.

We need a social culture here on earth. We all have to be the kings of our own respective domains. His
