    By Way Of…

    by Lynn M. Dixon

    Foreword

As a proofreader during the 1980 Session for the Georgia Legislative Counsel, I had the pleasure of meeting Senator Horace Tate. He was one of the two black senators in the state Senate at that time.

We were being treated to a feast that was provided by the Counsel at the Georgia State Capitol Building. We refer to me, Bea and Alicia who were struggling transplants working as proofreaders in the city of Atlanta. We landed this job through a temporary agency and the meal with huge stuffed mushrooms along with other delicacies was quite memorable.

We were black women that hailed from the North and before we arrived, the Counsel had been unable to retain employees for the proofreading positions. One challenge may have been the required hours of the job.

We had to start at the normal time of eight or nine in the morning. But we had to keep ourselves occupied until legislation ended and then the typed bills came over to us. Around five or so in the evening, we were then inundated with the real work of the day.

The typists or data entry clerical staff input the bills, printed them, and then brought them over for us to proof them. That meant that we had a normal full workday to find ways to calmly wait. We played Scrabble, told stories, and even tore the edges off the perforated dot matrix paper to keep ourselves occupied during the lulls.

When the bills did appear, one would read to the other out loud to catch all grammatical and\or spelling errors. That was how proofreading was done back then. There was no Spell Check or Editor to make corrections for us. Thus, our workdays ended late like eleven pm or midnight but the three of us made it to the finish line. Thankfully, security men walked us to our cars.

So, when Senator Tate approached us during that one time that we were free to roam the Capitol Building, he said, I was wondering who was correcting those bills. Then he asked each of us, Where are you from? Bea said, I am from Rochester, New York."

He asked, By way of? and waited for an answer. She did not know how to answer the question.

He asked Alicia where she was from and she responded, Cleveland, Ohio. And he asked, By way of? The light bulb
