    CHARITY HOSPITAL MENTAL

    INSTITUTION CHILDHOOD

A nurse enters the room holding a glass of water with pills in a cup. She walks over to the patient who is under her covers asleep.

Ms. Carmelita LaRue I have your meds for you today.

Carmelita sits up and looks at her drowsy and says in a low voice.

Get the Fuck out of here! Then she screams loudly and pushes the sheets off her body and attempts to get up, but her legs are strapped to the rails.

Nurse Tammy spoke in a pleasant tone to Carmelita: Now dear, you know you need your meds. If you refuse these pills, they will give it to you in a shot.

Carmelita spoke up and said I will rather take a shot, go get my doctor.

The nurse slowly vacated the room and Carmelita went back under her sheets.

INT- Psychiatric Doctor in office reviewing papers in a file.

Nurse Tammy knocks lightly on the glass door. Dr. Ellison your patient has refused her pills, so she wants the injection.

Dr. Ellison looks up and said send an order to the pharmacy.

The staff and Dr. Ellison came into her room and as they held her down the nurse came in and injected her with Risperdal.

The doctors looked at her file and said she is sick! She needs to be institutionalized.

No one would understand only the patient knows what could have triggered her illness. See going back into her childhood was so much trauma.

    Carmelita’s Sub-conscience

See New Orleans was a scary place to live. You think tourist got a scare. Well think about the residents. We would play around areas that we knew would scare your socks off.

Voodoo was a Spiritual Witchcraft that was everywhere in town. You could buy those candles, dolls, and little crazy jars, wax figures to put spells on people. Tarot Card readers and Psychic people that can tell your future and make you a fortune was a mile apart.

People thought that was scary wait until you see the zombies that had yellow eyes and red lips. Women who was crazy and men who was crazy too.

The Cemetery was scary I believe that real witches and warlocks did live there.

I like living in the swamp area myself. I see alligators and snakes all the time. I have seen different species of frogs, lizards, and all kind of bugs in the hot summer.

But most of all I love the birds. I am so in Love with Louisiana. No matter what I love it here.

The road was where we walked most of the time, the trees looked like they could just grab you and then you might come up missing or murdered like some of the girls did in my area.

My sister was one of them.

I love walking outside on country roads.

I always had to walk fast just to keep up with my sisters, they knew how to skip, and skip fast.

We had to go ten blocks just to catch the bus. The bus would be driving so fast it would be dust that looked like smoke behind it.

We would be dirty just standing there. We would get on it and go straight to the back. The bus driver would only look at where we should go and sit.

Once we sit down, off he goes. Diamond and Ruby was always sitting together laughing at the boys.

I just sat alone and read my books.

Once we got to school, I never saw them again until time to catch the bus to go back home.

    BUS RIDE

Mr. Foster always picked someone to help with the cleaning off the chalk board after class.

So, for the first time he picked me. I was glad to help.

I went down the hall to the water fountain and put some water in the little pan with the yellow sponge and came back in the room took the black eraser and started to wipe away the lesson for today.

After that I realized I was too short to reach the top line, so I got a stool and stood on it and slowly made my lines go up and down evenly.

I didn’t notice that Mr. Foster was watching me from the back of the room.

He came up near me and said you do a nice job Carmelita. I said thank you Mr. Foster.

He just stood there watching me until I was finished and said I would love for you to stay tomorrow too.

Do you think your mom will mind if you stay fifteen minutes longer?

I can give you extra credits on your grade. Sure Mr. Foster. I said just think that math test I failed will need some help.

    I can stay.

Good girl. See you tomorrow. I was so happy that I ran outside to catch the bus, but it was gone.

My sisters were gone too. I could not believe it.

I was in there for a long time and the time slipped away from me. I had to walk home, and it look like the rain was coming.

I had to rush through the wooded area hoping to catch the bus where it stops near a broken-down fence.

    I need a watch. One day I
