About this ebook
Gail O'Dell
About the author I was born and raised in northeast Tennessee near the Great Smokey Mountains. My family and I lived in a close net community, consisting of large extended families. My family was very close, there was my mother and father two brothers and a sister. We didn't have much but we had each other. I grew up loving the outdoors. When I graduated from high school I started working in retail. I spent fifteen years in retail and there I meet people from all over the world. During that time I took classes in the local community college. I tried computer programming then legal aid and decided these weren't for me. After I went to work at the Developmental Center for people with developmental disabilities; I decided to go back to college and get my degree to teach school. During this time I took classes in creative writing, it helped me to be able to express myself. Many nights I put my great-nephew and great-niece to bed telling them stories. I wanted to be able to share with other people through publication my thoughts and dreams.

One Dark Night
Erica Lawson, was used to being alone, she lived in an old refurbished building on the second floor. Her loft had two large spacious bedrooms. Her living room and kitchen were combined. She had lived in the city sense she graduated from college. Erica was a beautiful young girl with long black hair and clear blue eyes. She was an only child. Her mother and father had died when she was about ten years old. She went to live with her great-aunt. Aunt Mrytle had often told her that when she looked into her eyes that she saw her mother. Just knowing this made her feel like she was never alone. Aunt Mrytle lived in a small town at the foot of the Rockies. Her aunt had died just a few moths ago of a sudden heart attach; last night she received a phone call from her aunt’s lawyer. He told Erica that her aunt had left her the cabin and land that surrounded it. He told her that she could spend some time at the cabin. The day started out bright and clear, Erica a fifth grade teacher at Bradford elementary school, was about to meet someone that she couldn’t forget.
Today was the first day of the summer vacation; Erica would have the whole summer to decide if she wanted to keep the cabin or sell it. She had just a cup of coffee and then packed her suitcase before she left for the cabin. She traveled for three hours before she got near where she would turn to go up to the cabin. She thought that if she was going to spend the week at the cabin, she needed some supplies. There was a small country store on the left side of the road. The store was a little rundown, but it looked friendly so she pulled in.
image2.jpgInside the store, she could smell smoked ham and cinnamon. The shelves were lined very neatly with cans. Over at the counter was an older lady; she was a small woman with silver hair and a flowered dress. The woman looked up and smiled at Erica.
May I help you,
she ask?
Oh I just needed a few things like cleaning supplies and some bread and meat,
said Ercia. She got the items she needed and turned up to the cabin. When Erica reached the opening in the trees, she saw a two-story log house. She thought to herself a cabin indeed, this was a beautiful home. When she opened the door, she smelled a musty order of a house that had not seen anyone in sometime. Erica thought it will take a few days to clean and dust so she decided to get a good night sleep and start tomorrow. The next day she ate some toast and coffee then started cleaning. She decided to start in the kitchen and move on to the rest of the house. In just two days she had the house looking and smelling like someone had lived there all along. She didn’t have a television; there was a small radio. One evening while she was setting on the porch and listening to the radio, the announcer told that the community was expecting sever thunderstorms that night. Erica liked to watch and listen to storms because it was calming to her.
Since it is summer, the days were long and quiet warm, Erica sat out on the porch and watched the sun set. She
