PREFACE
WHAT COULD I DO?
I N RECENT HISTORY, brothers and sisters in Christ have been killed during worship services or in other tragic instances; Christians have been killed just for being Christian. There also have been senseless killings in our schools, streets, and other public areas. I have been deeply saddened and hurt by these tragic ev ents.
I prayed about it and asked the Lord, Is there anything I can do?
The answer that came to my heart was to be prayerful, diligent, and watchful in my own life and to teach my family to be prayerful, diligent, and watchful.
I also felt strongly in my heart that I should write this book, with the hope that churches will develop a security and safety plan, that schools will take measures to keep our children safe if, and that we, as individuals, will train ourselves to be alert and aware of our surroundings and be prepared to react appropriately if we are exposed to danger or an emergency situation.
As with all things, pray about it to our Father in heaven in the name of His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and let the Holy Spirit guide you.
INTRODUCTION
PARADIGM SHIFT
Y EARS AGO, I was newly hired as an oil refinery operator and was put through an extensive training class, during which a video was shown about paradigm shift. The video was intended to inspire and encourage us new oil refinery operators to speak up if we saw a better way of doing things; to introduce new ideas, instead of accepting the status quo just because it was the way things had been done. It was the first time I’d heard the term paradigm shift , and I thought what it was. Was it taking two dimes from one pocket and shifting them to another po cket?
I learned the definition of paradigm is a typical example or pattern, a model,
and a paradigm shift refers to changing the typical pattern.
The paradigm in so many churches and schools has been to hold worship services or Bible studies without considering any security measures and to send our children to school, taking only minimum security measures and just assuming everything will be fine.
I have been in the church all my life, and in my experience, I have rarely, if ever, heard a discussion on safety and security—that is, until recently. I believe that this paradigm is changing. In fact, while preparing for this book, I asked various preachers, ministers, and church leaders if they had a security plan for the congregation, and they confirmed that they do.
For those in the church who think a security plan is not needed, consider this: is there a security plan for the collection? In general, at least two people will take the
