Ask the Butterflies: New and Selected Poems
()
About this ebook
All children hear about
how caterpillars spin
inside cocoons, come out
as butterflies.
And children learn of Jesus
who died, was put inside
a tomb that opened for us,
his life revived.
The Monarch butterflies
now face extinction’s fate
because the corporate lies
make greed inflate.
Profits mean more than lives
of people, plants,; those words
and deeds doom fish, beehives.
flowers, birds.
They make poisons to sell
to kill unwanted weeds
and insects but don’t tell
all those it feeds.
They poison water, earth,
destroy, drill and spill
oil, plastic, waste for wealth,
take health and kill.
All like Monsanto liars
in power who truth resist,
all climate change deniers,
hear scientists.
Ask the butterflies
as now they fly away
before the last one dies
and hear them say:
“We are passing away,
you are passing away,
all are passing away,
to Judgment Day.”

ENDANGERED
AT MUSTANG ISLAND BEACH
I waded in the water until the rushing waves
splashed above my thighs,
and my feet sank in the sand below
as if an undertow pulled me toward the sea.
I feared then I would fall and flail and drown,
and so I turned and trudged against
the squid like tug of a strong tide.
Reluctantly I struggled toward the shore.
I joined my daughter searching
the shoreline when the waves rolled back
for places where the little shells,
the multicolored shells were stacked.
Finding them, she would stoop, scoop
handfuls of sand and shells to see
their colors of red and turquoise blue
and brown and golden yellow hue.
Despite the Texas tropic sun the air was chilly,
and the whipping wind after cold water
caused me to snuggle my towel dried body
in a fleece wrap as I sat in a mesh folding chair.
The breeding black-headed laughing gulls
sang with the steady rumble of the water.
I sank into sad reveries of the dying sea
drinking carbon dioxide from the air,
causing the ocean’s PH drop toward acid
that eats the calcium carbonate, starving shells,
killing coral and shellfish, as if the mercury
in tuna and the oil spills were not enough,
as if the deafening sonic booms deep in the water
driving the whales to swim for quiet somewhere,
as if the radioactive garbage and bomb testing,
as if the over fishing were not enough,
as if the Pacific Ocean’s garbage patch of plastic
nine feet deep and twice the size of Texas,
as if the tons of plastic found in stomachs
of dead whales and sea turtles washed ashore,
as if, I watch the sunset dance its colors on the water,
and my daughter, her husband, and her in-laws
build a fire on the sand. The electric cars and solar panels
may come too late to save what once lived in the sea.
And the coral reefs and the many species living
in marine museums and public aquariums
will not be enough to repopulate a future cleaned up,
if cleaning up is even possible, vast barren sea.
It’s all about money, for critters and people do not matter.
I will die before disaster, but my grandchildren,
and here they are asking me if I want to eat
a burger or a hot dog with beef that comes
from cattle farting methane, a greenhouse gas.
What has humanity’s so-called great cities
and vast use of coal, gas, oil, and water, yes,
poisoned water, come to? Ask the seas.
Ask the oysters, ask the clams,
ask the butterflies, ask the bees,
ask the pelicans, ask the terns, oh,
and ask the Gulf of Mexico.
REMEMBERING THE SEASHORE
for Richard Greene
My first visit with the Atlantic Ocean
was at a beach near Boston
when I was twenty with a youth
so wimpy he laid on the beach towel
watching me play in the surf.
It’s true the day was chilly
and the water much much colder,
but he didn’t even put a toe in.
That was our only date,
and I was grateful he was gone.
My second visit was at Rockport, Maine.
My husband and I dined on lobster by the beach
on brown paper with white paper cups
of melted butter. Those were the freshest
and cheapest lobsters we ever ate.
I took sea urchin, limpet, and
