About this ebook

True Crime of Love and Passion is the first book of three novels that tells the story of three different ordinary women who finds themselves after experiencing the harshness of a man’s world. Their stories will shine the light on their tormented hearts, with them experiencing abuse and rape—finding themselves through it all. Each choice they make leads them closer to the love they so crave and the life they wish for.

True Crime of Love and Passion is the firsthand account of a young woman who grew up sheltered by her loving parents. They put her though medical school and taught her how to take care of herself in the real world. After graduating, she finds a little house and job just outside of the city. There she finds herself alone for the first time in her life. After meeting a strange man in her home one evening and waking up to her father’s voice, she thinks she is going mad. She is embarrassed and afraid to know the truth behind her mystery man, who is somehow able to take control of her and enter her home without a trace. She learns that the crime of love and passion comes at a cost when her life is turned upside down as she is forced to follow a dark path of death and pain. She wonders who she can trust, and if the man she finds she can’t live without, who shows her a love like she has never known before, can handle her betrayal when she finds out she is with a child but doesn’t know who the father is—the ghost of a man or her first real love.

    Today it rained but I was happy for it; I love the rain, and after the week I have, had. I am surprised that the landlady, Mrs. Martha Clock, doesn’t kick me out. It all started when I first moved into the most perfect little house. It was located off to the side of town with a small back yard and picket fence. That was surrounded by fields. It needed yard work and maybe some paint on the inside, but that did not bother me. I wanted a place I could call my own; and the landlady gave me permission to paint with any color I wanted. I decided to use earthy tones to go with the feel of the place. I should have known that things were not always what they seem.

    First when I went to town to the hardware store to buy the paint and other supplies I needed; the owner’s son was most obnoxious. He kept trying to get me to go out with him; I must confess, yes, he was cute, and he knew it. Although he was not my type, I was still nice to him, lied a little and turned him down. I was able to get what I needed and was heading home when my bike tire went flat. I had to walk the bike the rest of the way, I was glad the weather was nice. When I finally got home, I started to paint, ate lunch, and by the end of the day I was done with the base coat of paint in my bedroom and wanted to go right to bed. I had made up a bed in the living room and was relaxing with a glass of red wine and leftover pizza, while reading a good book. Although my first night was not a pleasant one. I kept hearing things in the kitchen, but I did not see anything. The house is small, there is my bedroom, and one full bathroom. The kitchen is open to the living room with a bar that seats three at most, separating the rooms. I don’t have a kitchen table, so the bar worked out perfect. I was laying on my couch and could see into the kitchen and when I got up to look around the bar, I did not see anything. I went ahead and check the bedroom and bathroom, still nothing. I even looked out of the windows to make sure no one was walking around. Not that I could see, the outdoor lights were out, and the back-porch light looked broken when I saw it the day before. The landlady said she would have someone come by and fix it in the morning.

    The next day at around 7am a knock at the door had me jumping up and looking for my pants. I could not find a clean pair, so I put on the pair I wore yesterday, even though it had paint on them. When I looked outside, I saw the hardware man and his son, I open the door and asked how can I help you? He smiled at me and said, That he was here to fix the broken porch lights and to replace the blown-out lights. I told him okay; and was about to shut the door when his son said, hi. I was nice and smiled at him and likewise said good morning. I watched as they went about their work, before I went to the bathroom to clean up, and putting on a fresh shirt. I started on my bedroom again; I was almost done with painting when I heard another knock at the door. I went and open it to see the son looking at me, he said, we are done, if you need anything else please call. He handed me a business card and walked back to his father’s truck. I put the card on the wall next to the phone and went back to my work. By the end of the day my room was finished and unpacked. I was so tired that I decided to read a book in bed and then go to sleep to wake up early to finish the house before Monday, when I would start my new job. It was only Wednesday, and the house was small so I know I could finish before then. As I laid in bed, I heard more noises; I went and looked around the house to find nothing out of place. I cut on the outdoor lights and looked out of the windows to find nothing moving except a wild cat near the trash cans. I went back to my room and called my father up on the phone. I told him about the place and about the noises I was hearing. He was a retired cop so he told me to double check all the locks and to not go outside; not that I would. I had the gun he gave me when I was eighteen; and I could use it better than most.

    The next morning, I was finishing up the kitchen; that night I only got a few hours of sleep, and I was too worked up to stay in bed. I decided to paint the kitchen instead. It was a light sunshine yellow color with white trim; it made me feel relaxed, and happy. I was sitting at the bar drinking a cup of hot coffee when the phone rang. I was not surprised to hear my mother on the other end. She did not like the fact that I moved out here on my own and did not approve of the location. She was happy when I received the notice of work and the fact that my office would be close to her best friend’s office so she could keep an eye on me. My mother has always sheltered me from the world, where as my father pushed me in the deep end and taught me how to survive. I am so thankful for that; even in college where my classmates would pull pranks and get drunk on the weekends, I was able to hang and still pass all my classes. I am now a pediatrician; I can’t wait to get started and to help the little ones of this town.

    Later, that same day my father came over to visit and to make sure all my locks where in working order. He walked around to find any hiding places and plant thorny rose bushes around the yard. He even brought over an alarm system and set it up to make sure I would be safe. I had to remind him that he was turning into mother. He just laughed and said, It was her idea. Now that he was retired, he worked for an alarm company hooking up systems and helping older people learn how to use them. I still get butterflies every time I must set it. I am always afraid I will set it off; and most times I do. He gave me another lesson and helped me finish painting, then ate dinner with me before he left to go back home. I called my mother to let her know that dad would be home soon; she stayed on the phone with me for a little while asking if I met any good-looking men yet. I told her about the hardware man’s son. Although I did not recall their names, I did have their number on their business card. I told her about my visit to the hardware store and how my bike broke down. She complained that I should had drove my jeep, saying it would be easier to carry the pant. My bike had two baskets so I did not think it would have been an issue, besides I like the exercise, I told her. After I got off the phone with her, I went and looked around the house. With my dad’s help I finish the inside painting and had unpacked the kitchen and half of the rest of my things. I was sitting on my bed reading my book when I heard a sound in the kitchen again; I was determined to find what it was. I went into the kitchen and pulled out a camera and sat it on the bar, thinking I will see a mouse. I went and open all the doors and looked in each drawer. I did not see any signs of a mouse or rats; I went to the refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of cold water. When I turned around all the doors were close and the draws were also closed. I am not one to believe in the supernatural so I examining the doors to make sure they would not close on their own. I looked around the house and didn’t see anything or anyone. I went back to the kitchen and cut the lights off with the camera in hand I sat on a chair next to the window in the corner of the room, giving me a clear view of my little place.

    Nothing happened and no more sounds came that night; I woke up there in the chair with my head leaning on the wall and a blanket around me. I didn’t remember getting a blanket but then again, I could not believe I was letting a little noise bother me. I finish unpacking and decided to go into town to buy more food and another can of white paint for the bathroom. It really did not need to be painted, but I did not care for the color; the walls were an antique white which looked off brown to me. I took my jeep this time and went shopping around town getting to know the place. Some of the people were very nice to me, and others didn’t even notice me there. After all, the town was at one time very small; but as of today, it had over three thousand people living here. Most worked in the nearby city, and on the farms that surrounded the town. I found a little shop that sold music and books; I was so excited to look around. I could not resist buying a radio that had a record player built in it. I found a few records I liked and placed an order for a few more. When I got home and unpack the jeep; I found that the day went by faster with me working in the yard and listening to my new records. I could not sleep again, so I repainted the whole bathroom which was not large. I even sat down and watch a little TV before going to lay down again. The cable man had come and hooked up the cable while I was in town; he had left a note on the door letting me know it was on and to just hook up the TV to it. I am glad that I didn’t need to be there for that; the old renters had, had cable so everything was in place.

    As I laid in bed, I did not hear a thing; the camera did not pick up anything from the night before and the way I saw it, it was all in my head. This is the first time living on my own; my imagination must be running wild on me. I closed my eyes falling to sleep when I felt like I was being watched. I moved over to the side of the bed and rolled so it looked like I was getting comfortable, the whole time my hand was going for my gun that I had placed in between the mattress and the bed railing. I pulled it out of its case slowly and rolled over, pointed it at the door where I thought I felt someone looking at me. To my surprise there was no one there; I took a quick look around the room, and then got up and walked around the house. The alarm was set, and the locks were in place; I even checked in the closet and under the bed. It was nothing, no one was around. I put the radio on and had music playing when I got back into bed. I laid back down and went fast to sleep; I felt better with my hand still on the gun on the side of the bed. I was thinking about getting a dog but I change my mind on that; when I go back to work, I will be too busy to train or to care for it. While in college I found the workload to be heavy when it came to work and studying with other doctors, at the research center, that was connected to the hospital. I remember missing a lot of weekend parties because I was on duty the next day or on call, in the ER. My roommate was studying science, or the art of being a lab tech. She was strong and wise in the ways of the world, but could not stand people much. She could party with the best of them and still be able to get up and make it to class and be able to function better than any I have known. Thinking about her, and my chosen field, I fell asleep. I knew I made the right choice.

    The next day I looked around the house, and the yard. I can’t believe I have done so much in just a few days. I still had the weekend before it would be time for me to go to work. I felt so much better now with a good night of sleep; I went out back into the small shed and found a grass cutter and a can of gas. I was not one for cutting grass but now I was going to try it. As I pulled out the grass cutter a man came into the backyard with his hand up in the air; hi there he said with a soft but firm voice. I looked out at him, putting my hand up to wave, and smiled; as he walked over to me. I am Sammy, I live over the hill, I was taking a walk and saw you pulling that old thing out. I couldn’t help but smiled at him, and introduce myself to him as any good neighbor would. We stood in the yard for a few moments talking about the landscaping, when he asked, if I needed any help? I looked down at the old grass cutter, and said, I never cut grass before, and my father is the one who took care of the yard work as I grew up. He smiled with a boyish grin at me and with understanding eyes. I have time today I could show you how to get that thing working, if you’d would like? I agreed and had my first lesson on yard work. I must admit I was glad I had a small yard. It looked easy, but it was a workout. Sammy had left and came back later on to make sure I had made out okay with the grass cutter. I had made a pitcher of tea the night before and brought it out to the picnic table on the porch, with two cups; we sat and talked while we both enjoyed each other company. I thought everything was going well, when I heard a noise coming from inside the house; before I could go to check on it, the landlady walked around the house fanning herself as she sat down with us. I went and got her a cup and took a quick look around, nothing out of place and it all seem in good order. As I walked back out on the porch and was pouring the tea for the landlady; the pitcher flew out of my hands and landed at Sammy’s feet.

    My landlady jumped up and back, getting out of the way of the tea splashing across the floor; I apologized to both of them. As I handed Sammy a towel to wipe himself off. He just laughed, as he said, It was time for me to go home anyway, if you need a hand in the yard just let me know. I thanked him, and looked at the landlady; would you like to see my progress with the house? She moved closer to me. She had lived in this house when she was around my age, with her mother. She now lives in town in one of the largest mansions with her second husband who ran the town, the mayor, Mr. Clock. She was tall but stocky, her hair was always up and pulled into a bun on her head; her eyes were green which went well with her red hair, that showed some gray streaks. As we walked around the little house she smiled and asked, How much did you spend on the paint. I told her and she pulled out a checkbook and wrote me a check for that amount plus a little extra for the work. She gave it to me, as she kept looking around. I was going to hire someone to paint the fence around the yard if you want to do it, I will send over the paint. I agreed to do it; I told her I found the work helps me calm down. As we walked around the alarm went off; I ran to the wall and open the box and saw the code, then cut it off as I went to the bedroom where the alarm came from. The window was open; the landlady walked in behind me and looked around the room again with me. I went to the window and reset the lock and put a short poll the landlady gave me from the closet. I placed it into the window and we looked around the house.

    We sat down and I told her about the noise I was hearing every night, and how strange things were happening. She smiled and reassure me that it was all in my head. She pulled out a small candle from her purse and sat it on the bar. Burn this tonight, I am sure you will get a good night sleep. She got up and walked to the front door; I like what you have done to the place, keep up the good work. I will swing by at the first of the month to pick up the rent money and to talk with you; unless you would rather meet for lunch. Lunch would be great, I said. I will call you to set that up, she said to me as she walked to the door. You will be working next to one of my favorite places to eat. She turned and looked at me, Sammy is a nice man, but if I were you, I would keep him at arm’s length. He has a way with the ladies of this town, and a few children to account for. I nodded my head and said I was not looking for a man or a relationship at this time. She opened the door and headed out; Good for you, she said as she waved her hand in the air. But don’t forget that you are only young once and a relationship of any kind can be a learning experience you can tell your future children about. Did you tell your children about your relationships? She laughed Heavens no, I was a little too wild, I did not want them to know everything; only some of it. I smiled calling her Mrs. Clock, as I stood by the door, to thank her again. She shook her head, Please my dear call me Martha. I will send over a kitchen table and chairs that I have stored in my shed, unless you already have some coming. I thanked her and told her I did not have a table. She smiled and thanked me again for my hard work. Have a good night; and don’t forget to live life to its fullest; she walked down the steps to her car where a man was waiting for her. He just stood there holding the door open, with a blank expression on his face. I found him to be strange; but it was his job to drive her around.

    I went back in and check the alarm system to make sure nothing was amidst;
