About this ebook

Even though her dad told her there is no such thing as a mythical unicorn, there is nothing that eleven-year-old Karen loves more. Is it any wonder that when she believes she has seen one, she embarks on the adventure of a lifetime? Karen is a determined young girl dead set on proving her dad wrong. She follows the mythical creature’s tracks through a neighbor’s cornfield up to the edge of a large forest. A pack of wild dogs frighten her into dashing into the woods for her own safety, but the action causes her to get hopelessly lost. Hungry, scratched, and bruised, Karen eventually finds a clear spring-fed pond where she refreshes herself. Once again, she spies the elusive creature, and her real adventure begins.

Grandpa Moses

About the Author Moses L. Hochstetler was born and raised in an Amish family in northern Indiana. Along with his 13 older siblings, he helped his father on a dairy farm. By the age of 8 he was sitting on a plow driving three large draft horses. His chores were many: including such things as cutting and raking the hay, helping to put the loose hay in the barn, shocking wheat and oats, helping with the threshing, planting, weeding, and husking of the corn, milking the cows and bedding them down at night, feeding and watering the horses, the chickens, and the calves, gathering eggs, helping with the butchering and making maple syrup, gathering in the apples, pears, plums, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, cherries and apricots; digging up potatoes, chopping firewood for the wood-burning stove, as well as keeping the coal bucket filled. Moses was taken out of public school at the age of 16 to help his father with the many chores of caring for the dairy farm. Despite being raised Amish and speaking mostly in Low German during his childhood years, Moses loved to read and developed a good grasp of the English language. Later he passed his GED exams with flying colors, having some of the highest scores recorded in Kosciusko County at the time. When Moses was a mere 7 or 8 years old he had a vivid dream of reciting poetry before a huge crowd. He couldn’t remember any of the poetry he recited, but more than 30 years later he discovered that he did, indeed, have a gift for writing poetry. He has a collection of well over 600 poems which he has written over the years. His “How To rate and Judge Poetry” system (page 212) has become a standard for several on-line poetry sites. Today he is recognized as an excellent poet in the traditional styles of Longfellow, Poe, Holmes, Riley, Guest, and Dickenson. Find out why Moses has been considered one of a few poets who is a master of the art for the 20th and 21st centuries.
