CHAPTER ONE
Whistlethorn Manor had to be the creepiest place ever!
Sarah Williams, who had just finished reading her novel halfway through reading period, glanced around to see if her teacher was looking in her direction. Mrs. Morrison was on the other side of the room with Connor, no doubt helping him with his book. Sarah often thought that Connor faked not being able to read well because he had a crush on Mrs. Morrison and wanted to spend more time with her.
All the better for her right now, because it meant that the coast was clear.
Sneaking her iPod out of her desk—which she wasn’t supposed to bring to class—Sarah slipped it into the pages of her book. She found the photo gallery and opened it to the picture she had taken just this morning.
Whistlethorn Manor.
Even as she looked at the picture, she started to get scared. Whistlethorn Manor was the only old house in a neighborhood of new ones. It was tall with lots of windows, a rundown porch, and peeling wood everywhere. It was dark and gloomy, and even when the sun was shining it still looked spooky.
Most of the time, Sarah walked the long way to school so she didn’t have to pass the house. But today, something told her to be brave and not only walk by the house, but to take a photo of it.
She wasn’t sure why, but she had a feeling that trouble was brewing.
Pssst!
Sarah turned around. Her best friend, Karen Murphy, was leaning forward on her desk. Is that your iPod?
Karen asked.
Yes,
Sarah whispered. "But shhh."
Did you finish your book already?
Karen continued.
Uh huh.
Sarah smiled with pride. I loved it. And I knew the gardener did it. I’m so good at solving mysteries.
Sarah loved to read, and mysteries especially. She was always the first one in her class to finish reading a book. Naturally. She was far ahead of the class in everything. It was her endless curiosity, her parents said, that had her wanting to learn everything about everything. And she’d been that way since she was a small baby.
Sarah was a pretty girl with shoulder length black hair and smooth dark skin. She had been born in Jamaica, but moved to the small town of Red Creek in Pennsylvania when she was just six months old. Karen, Sarah’s best friend, was just as pretty, but had long brown hair and light brown skin. Karen had been born in England, and like Sarah, had come to Red Creek when she was only a baby. Both of their fathers had moved to Red Creek to work for a big software developer there.
Sarah and Karen became best friends in the first grade when they discovered they had many things in common. Not only had they both been born in different countries, they liked the same fashion, they both played soccer and loved to swim, and they both loved to read the same kinds of books. And they often ended up dressing alike without even planning it. Today, people might think they were sisters, given that they both had their
