    DEDICATION

To: Ed Hoy who taught me the science, love and business of stained glass. It’s a distance memory from your little house in old Naperville, but certainly worth the trip. Thanks Ed.

Along the way my wife Carol A. Breen has suffered checking my work and questions with saintly silence and accurate input. Librarians Chris and Quinn of the U of I Ricker Architectural Library chasing down Benny Gonzales and Helen Neal of the Tolono Library by finding the only copy of Glidden… you both saved the day with accurate information on Scottsdale’s iconic City Hall. Thanks also to Doug Sydnor and Jeremy Jones, architects with visual and verbal candor AOA certified. For thoughts on people doing glass, Chris Powers did sharpen my view on who, what and why and Barbara Harts for Tico’s story of the Old Adobe Mission…a most heartfelt hug, So right, Eva.

And the craftsmen themselves, Maureen Mc Guire and Louise Mc Call your input made us understand artists & craftsmen in a new way. B.J. Gonzales, Terry Wasse, Mark Lupkin, really told the story of buildings, people and the Artglass Studio in a detailed and personal format. Also, thanks to Larry Scott who would find Mark Lupkin for me and show me the architectural intricacies of the angular Keva City Hall. Architects working with Studios are such fragile arrangements and you all remembered it in fine detail. And, special thanks to the girls at Randy’s for breakfast and great humor. Sheila Legaspi, she and others kept me going.

    DEDICATION

My sincere apologies to any and all not mentioned here or in this book. I know you were a large part of our history. Your story told or not is just as important. Thousands of us grew and built this town of Scottsdale and that is just why it is what it is. — Bob Breen

    PROLOGUE

Light, Faceted Glass, beauty and design is part of what this book is about. But Dalles de Verie is not stained glass and stained glass is not stained. So, the reading is a discovery into just what these elements and Art are. It is a glimmer, a glance into the people who gave their art and life to faceted glass and architecture. It is an insight that we hope will transcend time as you view the work, people, their ideas, through words and photos to get at the essence of craftsmen designers and architects as they work together…and sometime not,..to give you their vision. If you like photos, go to chapter 14. If you enjoy characters, if you enjoy people, visit Chapter 8 and do your own research on these interesting people. Consider how the architect faceted glass designer and studio people work together to make these projects work. And we must never forget the French. Wines, haute cuisine, impressionists, Paris… who else could give us Daile de Verre? Enjoy.

    HISTORY OF STAINED GLASS

Glass, itself, is a Mediterranean invention. Like so many early discoveries; the area, climate, agricultural improvement and culture conflict, set the stage for new ideas. Glass was one. Either in Mesopotamia or Egypt someone found a bead
