Life is a roller coaster. Knowing when to get off is a challenge. This is something everyone must deal with in life, with no certainty of what the consequences will be for getting off or choosing to stay on a roller coaster for that little bit longer and seeing where it takes you. Life is a risk. Are you ready to take it on? Leap of faith!
This story is set in New York, with a four-year-old boy named Sam. Sam lived in an apartment with his mother Sally Sherlock, father Simon Sherlock, and the nanny Sarah Snow. However, it’s mostly just Sarah who was home, taking care of Sam, as the Sherlocks were extremely busy with work and were always out of town for business. Sam hardly saw his parents and called Sarah his mother as he didn’t know his real parents and Sarah had been in his life since he was two weeks old.
Sarah loved Sam as her own. Sarah took super good care of him. The Sherlocks sent really expensive presents to Sam to make up for the time that they were not there, like birthdays and Christmases that they missed because of work, but they didn’t mean anything to him. He just thought it’s normal. The Sherlocks were more interested in working than spending time with their only son.
Right now, all Sam needed was someone to care for him and not these strange people (his real parents) buying him things. Sarah had told him to never except anything from strangers. To Sam, these people were strangers, but really, they were not.
Sam asked his mother, ‘Who are these people?’
She replied, ‘Part of the family,’ and left it at that.
Sam thought that his mother was being nice for letting these people stay with them for a week at a time, a few times a year. He thought that they were on some sort of holiday. Sam hardly knew that they were there as they were always on the computer in their study room or on the phone.
Chapter 1
Sam and his best friend Sturt were about to start their first year of prep school at Lakewood Prep. Sam and Sturt had mixed emotions about starting school—very excited, scared, happy, and confused. A new chapter in their young lives was about to start. Sarah took the two boys shopping for school supplies at Maggie’s Marvellous Mall. The mall was massive. The boys couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the mall from the outside.
‘If it’s this big on the outside, I can’t wait to see what it’s like inside,’ Sam said excitedly.
It was a six-storey building that was made out of glass. This mall had 200 stores and underground parking. It had everything that you could ever need. As Sarah and the boys walked around the mall and headed toward the One Stop, School Supply Shop, the boys spotted a Maggie’s Marvellous Mall security guard. At first, the security guard had frightened the boys as they had seen his gun that was attached to the guard’s belt. Sam grabbed hold of Sarah’s left thigh tightly, and Sturt not far behind. Sarah looked down and asked Sam, ‘What’s wrong?’
Sam replied, ‘That man!’
Sarah responded, ‘That man? He is the security guard for the mall. He won’t hurt you. He is here to protect everyone at the mall.’
The security guard walked away, and Sam slowly let go of Sarah’s left thigh and turned towards Sturt.
Sarah told the boys, ‘We should keep going. We have a lot to get through today.’
The boys agreed that they should continue. Arriving at the One Stop, School Supply Shop, Sarah pulled out the list of things that the boys were required for school. The list was long. The list contained things like: books, pens and pencils, rulers, and tissues. Sarah pulled out a trolley from
