Dedication
I would like to dedicate this book to Megan Davies, senior vice president at Lee, Hecht, Harrison, the outplacement firm contracted by my previous employer. Megan was my outplacement counselor. As I state in the book, Megan is a superb professional who helped me to realize that I was stuck in a rut, angry at my employer, and not moving forward to find a new position. She knew that on day 1.
She allowed me to take some time to get over the negative feelings I had, but she made me own my decision, my plan, and my outcome from our first meeting. That was the expectation, and we started from there. She was totally upbeat, and she treated me with respect and courtesy. She explained in detail the program, the resources, and how the office worked. Then it was up to me to decide how to proceed.
Megan was a professional in an industry focused on preparing you to find the right position. She had great ideas, contagious enthusiasm, and a very genuine way with people, and she made you feel like you were the most important person with whom she was working.
I know she was just
doing her job, but she had an incredibly high standard and work ethic, and it showed. She absolutely wanted every client she worked with to be successful. She went beyond expectations every day to make sure that happened. I was very fortunate to work with her. She made a difference.
Lee Hecht Harrison had lots of great resources. I got great leads every day. I knew about all jobs available as soon as they were discovered on the many websites that LHH monitors. Remember this is what they do. With help from Megan and LHH seminars and resources, I decided to write this book and take a different life course. It was the right decision for me.
You see, I had this opportunity.

Preface
This is a little book, easily read in a single sitting if you are interested. But I would not suggest reading it in one sitting for most people who have just lost a job. Read until you have had enough—maybe an hour or a little more, maybe less, depending on how you react to the information. Then do something else before returning to it. You will get more out of it that way.
This is a book about a position lost, or a need for a change, and perhaps an opportunity found. This book is focused on middle and senior managers in large companies who have been terminated in some form or other. Sometimes it is called restructuring, downsizing, rightsizing or some other euphemism. It happens all the time. Some companies do it every two or three years. I hope the book will be of value to anyone who finds himself or herself unemployed unexpectedly.
It is about mourning the loss of the previous position and getting over it quickly and moving on to bigger and better things. It is also about using this event as an opportunity to evaluate your life position and your life direction. It is not a complete system, and it is only one tool. But it will get you started back up the mountain, to new adventures and better times.
I was a physician in private practice for twelve years. I had an opportunity to work with Senator John Heinz, our beloved senator from Pennsylvania who wanted to reform Medicare. Through this, I became interested in population management, using business best practices
to develop programs to improve health of specialized populations of people. I made a decision to enter the business world, and I never looked back.
I became an administrator in a managed care plan and moved on to other business roles in health care with several different companies. Each position was better than the last, and I learned a lot about business. Each company had a culture, and I watched that culture change over time.
Business has changed a lot in the last twenty years. The average executive in a publicly traded business is with a company for three to five years, and this is dependent on the industry. For an individual who loses an executive position, it takes a while to replace a good position, and sometimes it does not happen. You have to make choices, and sometimes it is hard. There is no best
solution in every case. But you do have options.
Nobody likes to be job-eliminated.
We all take pride in our work. But pride does not help replace that position with a better one. When I was terminated, I looked around for books and articles on how to get over the loss and move on. I found some things, but I did not find what I wanted or needed. So I worked to better understand what happened, why, and how. That is the basis for this book.
When I was in practice years ago, I wrote articles and self-help sheets for my patients. I even made self-help cassette tapes (that was the technology of the day) that proved to be very effective for some people. They were short and sweet, and I was told that they helped a lot, especially in the acute painful time right after an event or loss, whether it was death of a loved one or loss of a job or illness, etc. They focused on a person’s self-talk,
words and phrases used over and over that portray the emotions of the individual and reflect the present situation. Of course, I also followed these patients closely over time if they were having problems. Being a family doctor, I could keep track of how they were doing from other caring family members. We all have our self-talk, and we can change how we view a situation by changing the words and phrases we use every day. The concept of self-talk has been around for years, and the self-help industry has many resources that focus on self-talk. This book helps you to realize what you are saying and change it into a powerful force to promote your own well-being. This is one of several resources we will discuss in more detail.
When I first entered the business world, I found numerous books and articles on leadership and management that were very helpful in learning how to be a successful executive. Some of the best books were relatively short, very focused, and packed with practical stories and pearls of wisdom. I read them and passed them on to others. I hope my book will have that same practical wisdom and experience value.
I have been on a journey to deal with my own job loss, and it has been a positive adventure. I learned so much along the way. This book shares much of what I learned, and I hope it will be of value to
