CHAPTER 1
Streams of sunlight started peeking through Marie’s window blind. Marie opened her eyes and smiled. She loved seeing the sun coming through her window. Her rays of hope, she called them. Off flew her covers, and she went to her closet to see what to wear to school. Dressing in her favorite pair of jeans and sweater, she got ready for the day.
She heard her mom and dad talking through her bedroom door. It sounded like the same old conversation, or more accurately, argument. Ben said angrily and left, slamming the door behind him.
Marie had finished getting dressed and came out of her room. What’s wrong, mommy?
Nothing, honey. Your dad was running late and had to leave in a hurry,
answered Candace. What would you like for lunch today? I have bologna or peanut butter.
Bologna is fine. Do we have any chips left?
"Sorry baby, we don’t, but you can have an
