    CHAPTER 1

Dracus lives with nonhuman creatures. He also has a fish tank.

He lives in an antique house.

I T WAS A warm, sunny day, decades after the Great Battle of Landon in Cat W orld.

Momentarily, the sun was hidden behind dark stormy and bubbly clouds that moved slowly through the atmosphere, appearing blackish and reddish in color. The bright reddish rays of the sun moved slowly, making their way through a hole inside Dracus’s room and shining directly on his face for a few minutes. Dracus felt the warmth so he opened his eyes very slowly. Right after he blinked a couple of times, Hanchu, who was coming from behind his room, roared loudly and woke everyone up.

After roaring, Hanchu yawned and then walked slowly toward Dracus, who was still half asleep in his bed. Hanchu jumped onto the bed and started licking his face.

What is it, Hanchu? asked Dracus sleepily.

    Hanchu kept jumping on him.

Hanchu! Dracus said and slowly pushed him away.

But Hanchu just looked at him and continued licking him.

You really don’t want me to leave, do you? When Dracus looked at him, he noticed the bright rays of the sun peeking in through the broken walls in his room. Then he realized he had forgotten to wake up early. Blik! You forgot to wake me up! he shouted out his window.

Dracus did not know that Blik was already awake. She just lay there quietly with her eyes closed.

Dracus got up and grabbed the fiber rope tied to the tree outside his window. He held it tightly and then jumped and let himself down the rope to reach his kitchen on the ground floor of his old house.

Blik, come on. I’m late, he said as he banged a little wooden box next to the glass of water on the rustic table. Wake up, Blik! You were supposed to wake me up today, not Hanchu.

He opened up a crumpled brown paper bag that he grabbed from the kitchen cabinet. He grabbed a piece of bread, smelled it and then ate it. After quickly eating the bread, he drank a glass of water that was on top of the antique table. He also rushed to their old refrigerator, which was across him, then poured a glass of milk and drank it in seconds.

Hanchu, catch you later! he shouted, looking up to his room on the second floor of their sturdy old house.

And you, he said to Blik in the box. "Don’t eat too many bugs. It makes you drowsy!

Blik looked at him and just blinked.

    CHAPTER 2

D RACUS LOVED TO go to school so he could mingle with all the teenagers. His classmates looked at him when he walked through the school’s entrance. When he noticed them, Dracus fixed the collar of his shirt, combed his hair with his fingers and walked over to them.

Two boys had been staring at him since he’d walked into the school. I can’t believe that he is wearing the same shirt as yesterday, whispered the boy to his friend.

I think he only has one uniform, one pair of shoes, one pen and one notebook, answered the other boy.

    They were laughing.

Dracus saw these boys talking about him but he did not pay attention to them. He walked straight to his room and sat next to his classmate, Zubelle. His homeroom teacher noticed him when he came in and sat on Zubelle’s right. Dracus noticed his teacher too. Good morning, Mrs. Holt! he said.

His teacher was on the phone and already busy. She just looked at him while some teenagers started to find chairs to sit in.

When two other boys saw Dracus sitting beside Zubelle, they rushed over to her.

One of the boys asked, Don’t you see who’s sitting next to you?

Zubelle was busy texting and was listening to something through her earphones.

Guys, what’s wrong? she asked and pulled her earphones from her ears.

Can I sit next to you? asked the boy.

I don’t care, Zubelle replied and put her earphones back in her ears.

The boys were sitting on Zubelle’s left. Zubelle didn’t even bother to look who had asked her or to see who was sitting on her other side.

Zubelle, look who’s sitting on your other side!

Zubelle didn’t care, as she was busy listening to her music.

Where did he get his uniform? said one of the mean teenagers in the opposite row.

Ha! Ha! Ha! They were laughing at Dracus.

The teacher was busy typing lesson plans on the computer board in front of the class. When the teacher was finished and hit the Enter key on the keyboard, the tables inside the classroom transformed into desktop computers. The tables flickered to life and were accessible to the students as their desktops. The lesson plans and homework showed brightly on the table monitor. Some of the students did not pay attention even though the teacher had already said she was ready for them. Half of the class was still laughing at Dracus.

Guys! Please stop, said Zubelle, infuriated. Don’t you see Dracus is in a situation that probably none of you could deal with?

The teacher just looked at Zubelle and smiled at her for speaking up.

Another girl, who had been sitting quietly, said, Go, Zubelle! I will vote for you to be our class president.

Suddenly, all the students became quiet.

Wow! I never thought of that before. I was so busy insulting him that I didn’t even think of that, said the mean boy next to Zubelle. He leaned over to Dracus. I’m sorry, Dracus, he said.

When Mrs. Holt saw the exchange, she sent a happy face symbol—:)—to all the students. It flashed into all their message boxes on their desktop computers. When the students saw the happy face symbol message flashing on the screen, the ones who had been mean to Dracus apologized to him.

    CHAPTER 3

A S SCHOOL WENT on, Dracus became friends with almost all his classmates and became popular. He was also elected class president. Zubelle was chosen to be the class secre tary.

Being president is beneficial, as the president always gets the best table during lunch, Zubelle said in a text message to her friends.

I want you to be the president, Zubelle’s friend texted back to her. The two were sitting close to each other.

Later, they got up and left but continued to send messages back and forth.

Right after Dracus’s science class, he went to his locker. He saw a note on the door that said, Meet me by the cafeteria door before lunch tomorrow. Your best friend, Zubelle.

Dracus felt butterflies in his stomach while reading the letter. He felt overwhelmed because it was from the richest, most brilliant and most beautiful student in school and it looked like she wanted to do something with him. I can’t believe this is happening. Zubelle might like me, he said to himself happily. But why would she want to do anything with me? Dracus thought to himself, confused.

He got so lost in thinking about it he almost forgot that he needed to go home to feed everyone in his house. He rushed quickly to get food for his koi fish, Koi, and his dog. He also caught some flies for his frog and then went home.

That was the first time that he’d had to rush to feed Koi, Hanchu and Blik. They were unhappy by the time he came home and a little bit confused at Dracus’s behavior. Koi, who was usually very active, swimming around inside the fish tank, did not move a lot and was constantly staring at Dracus. Hanchu and Blik were also very quiet and they just hung out in the corner of the living room.

Later on, after Dracus ate his dinner that he fixed himself, all of them decided to rest.

When Dracus went to bed, he kept thinking about the note from Zubelle. He had a hard time going to sleep. What does she want from me? he mumbled and he tossed and turned in bed. I hope it’s something good.

Dracus got up really early the next morning. He even left his house an hour earlier than he normally did. This time, he chose to wear different clothes and combed his hair nicely.

When lunchtime finally rolled around, Dracus arrived at the place where he was supposed to meet Zubelle. There, he noticed something strange. It was quiet, and when the time came to see her, she wasn’t there. He decided to wait a little longer. But after he’d been waiting thirty minutes, some students started to notice him standing there. He decided he’d wait five more minutes
