It was June 1999, about six o’clock in evening. In the homicide department, Jack and Tony sat in the office. It was a quiet night. Normally, the windows were open and a soft breeze came in from the ocean.

Tony, you can really enjoy an evening like this.

    Makes for living, Jack replied.

Then a call came in, a 911, stating a body was found on the beach. Send a detective. We assumed that she was murdered. The captain called in for his two top-notch detectives, Jack Flynn and Tony Corelli. Jack and Tony went out to the crime scene. A tape warns the public that it was a crime scene.

He picked it up, put it in his plastic carry bag, took it back to Jack, and said, See what I found, a broken fingernail. That might really help us out. Might give us a little bit on the DNA to check it.

Jack told Tony, Call the coroner and get his ass out here now. And to the policeman, he said, Proceed to put your tape up. It said, ‘Police—Stay Back.’ Anyone that comes back here, arrest them. You understand what I’m telling you?

The policeman answered, Yes, Detective, will do it as you say.

Twenty minutes later, the coroner arrived. He brought out his gurney, picked up the body, and put it into the police ambulance.

Tony told the coroner, "We will follow you to your office. And don’t take forever to give
