I have prepared a great banquet … come to wisdom’s banquet and drink the wines that I have mixed. Leave behind your foolishness and begin to live; learn how to be wise.

    —Proverbs 9:1–5 (TLB)

The Lord formed me in the beginning, before he created anything else. From ages past I am. I exist before the earth began … I was always at his side like a little child. I was his constant delight, laughing and playing in his presence.

    This

book is dedicated to the women who demonstrate wisdom in everyday life by the way they care for others and give day in and day out with an attitude of humility and love. I especially want to dedicate this book to my mother, Edith Daly, who is a woman of God. My mom loves her family and the work of the Lord. She is a Proverbs 31 woman who supported her husband, the late Reverend Joseph R. Daly, throughout his life and his ministry. She gave to God’s work with an open heart of gratitude. Lady Wisdom is giving my mother a long, joy-filled useful life.

When I reflect on the Proverbs 31 woman, my mother exemplifies many of these characteristics. First and foremost, she loves the Lord Jesus Christ. She is a worshiper and a prayer warrior. Dedicating many hours to the house of the Lord and the children and youth of the Beulah Pilgrim Holiness Church and then later the people of Montserrat, she nurtured, led, and supported many youth and families. Working for the Welfare and Human Services Department in Boston, she served the community, providing needed services to many. On the island of Montserrat, she supported the work at Davey Hill Pilgrim Wesleyan Church by managing many of the different ministries. She also had her radio program, Heart to Heart, where she shared wise advice concerning spiritual and family issues.

My mother taught me how to love and respect the Lord. Many times, I accompanied my mother to all-night prayer meetings and special worship services. She introduced me to the Holy Spirit. Cultivating gifts and talents in her children and others is her most significant achievement. She taught me how to recite poetry, sing on stage, sew, garden, pursue my educational degrees, and be a good mother and wife, to name a few.

I also want to thank and recognize the love given to me by my husband, Errol Constant, and my children, Stephen and Karen-Ann Constant. You inspire me to be the best wife and mother. Thank you for your love and patience.

    Acknowledgments

I acknowledge my giver of wisdom, insight, and understanding, my heavenly Father. With great sincerity, I am thankful to God for giving me the capacity to appreciate Him. The desire to reverence the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I am grateful to Jesus Christ, who is my Lord and Savior. I am also thankful for the guidance of Holy Spirit in leading and guiding me in this process of writing this book, Lady Wisdom Gives a Party! Amen.

    What Is a Proverb?

The book of Proverbs comprises some of the Bible’s wisdom literature. A proverb is a type of Hebrew poetry that contains a massive amount of wisdom. A proverb is called a Hebrew masal, a poetic, terse, vivid, thought-provoking saying that says a word of truth in a few words. It includes two lines that do not rhyme words but rhyme concepts. Proverbs are neither commands nor promises. Proverbs sometimes need to be gathered together with other proverbs on the same subject to obtain the full understanding of the word or the complete picture. Many of the proverbs are observations on how to navigate life and what and does not work in situations. These poetic words carry life lessons and the understanding of the complexities of life.

Studying proverbs requires that one reflects on what is said. It takes time and some effort. That
