SONGS
ODE TO THE VIETNAM VET
I got drafted out the cotton fields of Arkansas
Got orders from Uncle Sam to come and join the war
They put a gun in my hands and stuck me in a foxhole
smack in the middle of Vietnam
They didn’t give me no rhyme or reason
said you better not cop out or we’ll call it treason
so, I went through it all for the sake of liberty
But they never told the story about how we fought to defend Ole Glory
and I had to kill my first man at the age of twenty-three
Won’t somebody tell me what that Vietnam war about
I hear tell it was a well-kept secret that never will get out
We spent thirteen hitches fighting Charlie in the trenches
and you wouldn’t even give us cheer
And when we finally got back home you made us feel alone
You acted like you didn’t know we were here
