Grace’s Childhood
G race was a ten-year-old girl who lived in a world of fantasy. As an only child, she often felt lonely, and real life was not very interesting to her. Some of her snobby school friends put her down. They said she was crazy and that she lived in a dream world.
Grace was adventurous by nature. Her favourite hobby was to explore through the real and imaginary worlds. Even though she did not look like a tomboy, in a way she was one. One could say curiosity always got the better of her. Looks- wise, Grace was very pretty. She had big blue-green eyes; long, dark eyelashes; and long, flowing, curly brown hair with some blonde streaks in it: a gift from the sun. She had really fine, delicate features. Many of the girls in her class secretly wished they could look like her. Grace did not think that she was pretty or special. She just felt sadness inside, and she longed for something bigger. She secretly wished that she could grow up quicker and look much older.
More than anything, she thought if she had friends who really understood her, then everything would be all right. In truth, she was lonely. She sensed that she was different from the other girls in her class. She was very grateful for Granny, her mum Anna’s mother, who was her best friend and someone who understood her wild imagination.
Grace once said to Granny, I’m so happy you are as mad as me; maybe that is why we get along so well, or maybe it’s just that everyone else is mad and we are the normal ones.
They still giggled about that.
Granny lived in a big old house in the countryside. The house was on a small rambling road, outside a little village called Bumbervale. Bumbervale was embraced on all sides with babbling brooks, overgrown hedges, and beautiful wildflowers. There was a bridge just beside the house, with a wide gushing river running under it. Behind the house were the mountains that swept down to the sea. In summertime, the slopes wore a coat of purple heather. Grace often referred to these as the purple mountains, and together, Grace and Granny would roam the hills some nights at sundown.
Granny always thought adventurous walks were more fun as the sun went down. From the house, you could see the nearby forest’s luscious green trees. Their branches were so thick and heavy that they seemed to kiss the ground and touch the sky all at once. Cool, clear waterfalls could be seen cascading down the mountains, right into the village. The waterfalls were always so refreshing to take a dip in on a hot summer’s day. They ran, skipped, and danced down the slopes like Grace’s own wild imagination. She loved the energy of nature. She felt safe and secure in its company and
