About this ebook

Two adoring spouses, Roger and Margaret, lose the loves of their lives and a routine that made them fond and content. They become baffled and find chaos learning to live without the other. Margaret escapes memories by traveling, and Roger keeps the candle lit, recreating memories to last the rest of his lifetime for his daughter, grandchildren, and himself. Margaret is led to Roger after finding typed letters to his beloved with questions, missing her and trying to heal. Both Roger and Margaret bond in understanding and empathy; they develop an enduring friendship as two people searching for life and doing the best they can in their remaining years.

“The Perfect Kind of Imperfect reaches your heart. You bond with Roger and Margaret as they relive what they had, meet, and reach out to each other. We get to know and love their families, and we get to know and love them. Jackie Adams has a way of writing that touches you deeply and keeps you enchanted. You close the book with a tear, and you want to hear more. We hope to meet this author again soon” (Daniel R. Mandelker, Stamper Professor of Law, Washington University in St. Louis).

    PREFACE

Did you not know how much I love you?!

Roger stands on the concrete porch in front of his stone cottage. Sure, he misses the home Harrietta and he once shared. Here, he is closer to her now, as she rests in peace. The best part is he didn’t sell it to strangers. He made it their daughter’s inheritance, from her mother, to share with his son-in-law and grandchildren. They’re happy, and he is relieved strangers aren’t making new, disconnecting memories within it. He stares across the street at Harrietta’s tombstone tucked in tranquility underneath a blanket of nature.

The wind picks up. He smells snow in the air that hasn’t quite arrived yet. He cradles his coffee mug in his hands. It’s as warm as Harrietta’s hands used to be. He’d come in after a long winter’s day of construction, and Harrietta would always glove her hands over his. Your fingers are so cold, Roger, she’d say with concern and love.

He’d smell fresh coffee continue its entrance in to the living room. He smiled and always replied the same comment over the years, Cold hands, warm heart. This would lead to her arms wrapped around him in a tight hug that kept him as content then, as her memories do now. He quietly says out loud, I miss you, Harrietta.

He turns, looking at his cottage once more, while wondering if this year he’ll be strong enough to attend his daughter’s Christmas dinner. Harrietta’s only been gone for two years, but to the O’Dell family, every day without her feels like a decade.

On the opposite side of the cemetery is Margaret Stevens. For four years, every single morning, she has visited her Lexter. This year is no different for her, as she fixates on a piece of paper clinging to his name, inscribed on the tomb. She balances her weight against his gravestone, and grabs the rubbish off. She’s busy thinking how rude others are to litter trash out of their passing vehicles, without a thought toward anyone else’s feelings! And what do those caretakers do?! She will call them and complain as soon as she gets back home.

She traces Lexter’s name inscribed on his stone. She whispers, I miss you, Lex. Margaret straightens her body carefully, wadding the paper into her pocket as she begins making her way back to her home, across the street, toward the house they shared together for fifty-six years.

    CHAPTER 1

Roger gets to his solid, red door he recently had the crew build after retiring from his management position at LDC Construction. Sure, the boys gave him hell, but Harrietta always wanted a red cedar door. She will, would have, he mentally corrects himself, loved this.

He sets his empty mug on the vacant telephone vanity that used to be Harrietta’s favorite. She’d sit at it for hours talking to her friends, Sally and Velma. He’d hear one-sided conversations filled with laughter, gossip, and sarcasm. Antique shops, yard sales, and coffee morning plans to go out
