Born in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, I had my destiny already decided for me. Coming from factory-working parents, it was expected for me to do the same. But my character and ambition were different. I loved adventure and new things. I love to write. Unfortunately, in the communist “heaven,” it was impossible to publish, so I finished my studies and found a job. I did lots of jobs more or less important. After the revolution, I started taking writing seriously and started a family as well. Meanwhile, I published random little articles in the national newspapers.

    The Itar Visitors

I ’m sitting and looking out the window. Winter drizzles with large flakes a carpet of snow. I can hear Nane laughing happily. Her father made her a slide and she is playing on it. My mother is in the kitchen preparing dinner. The little one is with her, in the bunk bed. I can hear him making noises. Probably he put his foot in his mouth again. From the dining room I can hear yelling and curses, father and son-in-law, are playing football on the TV. I’m in the office, in front of a blank sheet of paper and I’m remembering another winter, a warm winter with little snow. Although it happened not long ago, I have the feeling it has been a long time since then.

I was coming from my cousin Dan. I had had with him one of those very common discussions to us that make you think. As it was warm and beautiful night I decided to walk home. Deep in thought, I didn’t notice that I reached the section of the road less circulated. I woke up from my dreaming in complete silence. On both sides of the road stood two tall hills covered with small bushes and trees behind them where stretching greenery, which at winter after sunset were actually deserted, although the street connected two highly populated neighborhoods.

In the darkness of the evening, a state of restlessness started filling me up. Like a forthcoming danger threatened me. Although it wasn’t the first time I walked this road at the same time under the same conditions. No creature was in sight. I tried to shake off the fear watching the stars. I wanted to experience my knowledge of astronomy, just acquired from the lessons that I attended for a few months now, trying to identify the constellations known to me. So I noticed too late the three shadows that crept among the bushes, going down the slope of the hill. When I noticed - too late - they were not even two meters from me. I winced, my first impulse was to run for it. I found myself grabbed by the hands and dragged up the hill. I struggled with all my strength and made desperate efforts to get loose. My bag slipped, then broke away and fell down. I didn’t think much of it. Getting free was the main issue, I could recover it later. Its color made it hard to spot on the black and white landscape. Despite my efforts, my companions remained unfazed. They were not impressed by any of my tries to free myself or the few kicks that I gave them wherever I could reach. They seemed made of metal.

When I got up the hill, I threw my eyes down the valley and froze still. Down at our feet on the colored ground a dark object could be noticed. It was huge! Circular with a vaulted dome over like a lens, the surface covered about ten meters and its height was about three. I could not see what it was standing on, seemed to sit directly on the ground.

After I woke up from my amazement I calmed myself. Theoretically I knew what to expect. I had read enough about it. Basically ... you know the saying with . My heart started beating faster. The object became whitish. As we approached it became whitish yellow, then yellow, intense yellow then orange to red. When I got close to it, it had become a dazzling red-orange that was blinding me.

My companions forced me to hurry up. Perhaps the ship was ready to go. Emotion had taken over me. And my mind started having all kinds of strange thoughts. And maybe not all of them mine.

I don’t know how I got inside. I know only that from the ship came something like a bright light that blinded me. Instinctively I closed my eyes. When I opened my eyes, I was in a semicircular room, with walls that were completely covered by silver-gray panels with a lot of dials in all shapes, sizes and colors, colored lights that blinked or not and dozens if not even hundreds of knobs and buttons. In front of them was a standing creature working at them. Suddenly it turned to me and made eye contact a few seconds. I felt like shivers where going up and down my spine and the hair on my neck began to rise slightly.

He turned, pushed a flap, and then looked at me again with arms crossed on his chest.

I was tense all over, preparing myself for what was going to happen. And I wasn’t mistaken. Through my mind I started to hear a pretty trivial text, which had been also heard by others about a distant civilization set on charity. In fact the text was not important, but the purpose for which it was given. It was clear that with the speed and intensity in which it was distributed as the banality of the text, it followed anything but informing me. It had another goal! To know it I couldn’t lose the thread of the message. So I tried to all that they said to prevent the dizziness and headache, as I heard happened to other people. In particular I had to prevent the hypnotic induction, which would have totally deleted the meeting. So when the text reached the key phrase, , I stopped it short. I had no way to focus and communicate telepathically, like I should have, so I said aloud:

    - I don’t believe anything! My voice sounded strange in the room.

Silence fell over the room. Nothing could be heard. He watched me with amazement. That’s how I think we would look at a monkey that would suddenly begin to speak fluently. He watched me a few moments in silence. I just wanted to run away. Then he said only:

    - We do not care. He had a throaty voice with a twist of metal inflexion. Although he seemed to pronounce our words fairly easy.

I believed their word. But I was not going to let myself be intimidated. I knew I should treat them from equal position if I wanted to get something. So I continued contented:

    - I’ll make a proposal. I know you want to know more about us. And we ourselves are trying to find as many things we can about you. I could remain on the ship for a while let’s say equal to one week on earth. Period in which you can study me all you want. Instead I ask you in return to show me how life is on the ship, to participate effectively in all the activities of the ship. What do you say?

I said everything quickly, from a blow. Then I waited breathless for the answer. He looked at me for a while in silence. I had to admit I did not feel too good under his eyes. Actually I did not feel good generally speaking. My head hurt. The effort that I had done went beyond my possibilities. He closed he’s eyes and sketched what he wanted to be a smile, but it could have made any infant scream in horror. Then he said slowly:

    - We will think about it. What do you want to do now?

    - Sleep! The answer burst almost involuntarily. Your devices drained me. He blinked shortly. It seems that blinking was a universal gesture. He raised his hand and showed me something behind my back. He had a narrow hand with long fingers, thin and component, and a small palm. Three fingers were in extend of the hand and the fourth was opposite like ours.

I turned and I almost hit a second individual, who was behind me, and behind him, an opening in the form of a door. I would have sworn that I didn’t come through there and especially, that no one else was in the room, only the one I talked with. The being turned and took the lead. I went into the corridor and walked several steps. My companion stopped near a door, which opened by itself. Inside a yellow light and three glass cabins (I think). He pressed a button. A door opened. Then he told me to undress and go in there then he left.

The inside of the cabin was white. The walls and floor were covered with a soft and bright material. It looked like a sponge wrapped in sheet. The interior was alveolar. Once inside you felt like in the inside of an egg. As soon as I entered, the door closed and from the ceiling and walls water started pouring in drops of warm bubbly water that whipped my skin. After a few minutes the water became clear, perfumed and warmer. Then it stopped, and from the top poured a red light, warm almost hot. In this light it was clear that I didn’t need a towel. I spent a few good minutes, but it became too hot. I turned to seek a device to get out with. But the door opened by itself and in the small waiting room a surprise expected me! My clothes had disappeared and in their place I found a very slim transparent, pant, and also a shirt with long sleeves, made of the same soft transparent material. Alongside it was a body suit and a pair of boots. I don’t know how they were able to take my measure, but it was perfect on me. The body suit and sleeves closed in front with tape. The color was a glossy white. It looked soft to the touch and light. However it was very thick. The short boots, up to half my calf, had no heels I could pull them like a sock. Only after I had the boots on me I found that it fully isolated me from the ground. Thus equipped I went out the corridor. There my attendant waited for me. When he saw me he leaded the way. I followed several steps behind him.

Honestly, I did not want to get too close. Going near them, gave me a strange sensation. Immediately I felt fear and an irresistible disgust. I would more likely go near a snake, (although there aren’t chances that I would grow sympathy for them in the next million years). Their body was cold. The skin, a shade of brown-copper, was smooth and glossy. They were shorter than me, probably 1.50 -1.60 m. Weak constitution and more slim, shoulders down, arms and legs proportionate.

The round head was covered with hard, glassy hair, light golden blonde, which was shoulder-long. In front a fringe cut in zigzag, was covering a high forehead. They had no eyelashes or eyebrows. Under the huge bangs appeared two huge eyes. Large, prominent, they were covering nearly half of the face. The oblique form stretching to the edge of the face, also the narrow pupil resembled those of a cat. The enormous iris covering the eye was almost entirely green a strange, intense, fluorescent green.

Under the eyes there was the nose. A curious presence, an elevated bump with two long and slim openings parallel to each other. The mouth was even curious-er, a straight line, with no lips, under which were two rows of small conical teeth. Besides this there was the prominent cheeks, small pointy chin and a long and thin neck. The creature that was walking in front of me was the same.

He stopped near a door. It opened by itself, fixed inside the wall, four openings, inside them other sockets. He showed me one of them and left. I slipped in the slot and I laid down. It was lined with a soft, foam substance, like a sponge. But after I sat down, I found that I can stretch and turn it as I want. I curled in it and closed my eyes. In my ears began to resonate the murmur of a mountain creek slowly sneaking among the stones and the air began to be fragrant. I felt into a deep
