Some aspects of Latin American culture
Based on direct observations by
BERNARDO VALLEJO, PH.D.
PREFACE
not only serves as an excellent source for advanced students learning Spanish in its natural setting, but as a fine introduction to Latin American culture as a whole. While having the academic qualifications, the author does not write as an armchair
linguist and anthropologist, but as a Bolivian scholar who has spent most of his life in the Andes, who has personally traveled the whole length of the Pan-American Highway from the Rio Grande to Cochabamba, in Bolivia, and one who has spent time in each of the areas he describes in such an interesting manner. The format of the book adds a unique dimension to language learning, enabling the student to understand being bilingual is only part of the communicative process –that of being bi-cultural is the other indispensable element– an element that is missing in most books of this nature. Thus, Dr. Vallejo tunes the reader into cultural facets as well as value systems of Latin American society, not just in the descriptive content but through immediate application in the special sections at the conclusion of each chapter: Temas de Discusion
y Notas Culturales.
As an anthropologist who has spent twenty years in the Andean area of Latin America, I was particularly impressed by the fresh insights received through his chapters on A Quechua Village in the Andes
and The Healer, ‘Curandero.’
I would unhesitatingly recommend this book for its practical approach to language learning for students and the more important aspects of Latin American society and values.

F: ¿Cuánto tiempo me tomaría llegar allá?
L: ¡No, no!
