    CHAPTER ONE

George the Basset Hound and part time detective ran into the house he shared with his brother Oscar. He found him in the living room in front of the fire snoozing. Wake up Oscar, he shouted, I’ve something important to tell you, WAKE UP.

Oscar yawned very loudly and opened one eye to see a very agitated George looking down at him. Oscar pulled himself together and got to his feet, whatever is the matter George, you look quite hot and bothered?

Phoona the Pekinese has lost Pumpkin, her baby, he hasn’t been seen for two days, she is distraught, thinks he wandered away towards DARKLY DOOMLAND after taking him for a walk near Silvery Pond. Oooh my good heavens, exclaimed Oscar, Not DARKLY DOOMLAND.

It’s up to us to find him Oscar, said George pacing up and down the well worn Persian carpet. I think this will test our metal and our dusty detective skills, we need something exciting to blow the cobwebs away. It’s a long time since we had a mission to accomplish.

Inwardly George had to agree, I will have to be fit for the task ahead, he thought and graciously waved away his favourite Victoria sponge cake.

After tea they had a game of Scrabble. Much to Oscar’s irritation George won the game again for the 3rd time in a month. I MUST, MUST read the dictionary soon, Oscar scolded himself. Let’s go for our walk Oscar. It was a lovely moonlit night and as they sauntered down the lane they spied Mr Fox stealthily treading through the undergrowth going about his business. The crickets were making music in the trees and Oscar had his nose down a rabbit burrow when George stopped suddenly and exclaimed in a whisper, What if Queen Tabinetta has captured Pumpkin for his beautiful coat?!

Oscar drew himself up sharply and said hoarsely, Don’t even think about it, we will never get him back if that’s the case. It was well known in
