De-Witt A. Herd

    CHAPTER 1

    Twin City Run

It was a slow day and warm before the New York run. The city falcon catches an early meal of the flying rats called pigeons that would be suffice for a week if it chooses. Once the sun reaches a third in the sky the New York run had already started at hand. People crowded the subways, the bus rolls out in fleets as every 15 minutes reduce to 10 and those with cars keep forgetting there is more than one who will run. The race will consist of the infamous famous yellow cabs, limos, delivery bikes and the Jersey invasion as commuters ignores the native cars until the traffic jam becomes more than music of the colored lights and horns.

And if someone ventures three thousand miles west before the sun rise or at least before peaking over the horizon; the LA run is a mere breeze if you’re native within. However, north, east and south everyone had the same idea to start early before everyone else. Unfortunately the phrase great minds think alike, proves to be more than a nightmare. Tens of thousands commuters crawls at a snail’s pace as cars are kissing bumper for 6 to 10 miles of frustration. And it only takes one fender bender to create a devastating accident to bring miles of convoy to a halt for hours on end.

And as the sun stalls to annoy the west; a certain investigative journalist Ms. Ann Colden, 32 year old, plain looking as some do see her as fairly attractive 5 feet 5 inches and petit for a hundred and twenty five pounds. She’s was one out of few who raised out of the mail room to assistant camera prod then after five years applied for weather girl but was offered a local reporter position. Five additional years races by when a 40 year veteran journalist took ill and before he died, he requested Ann to be his successor. That first Monday of the week the executive producer without asking calls Ann to the office, hands her a key, a company credit card and said you’re the new top journalist; don’t disappoint me, now get out I got work to do. Ann froze a moment before saying uh yes sir, thank-you sir, and exit quickly out the door. A few offices down it hits her as people started to look at a strange women muzzling her scream and fidgeting as if a seizure had possess her. When she realize people were watching, she stop, used the new key to her office, close the shades and quietly freaked out in debrief. Knock, knock, and knock on the side of the door. Yes, come in she said. Maintenance ma’am, I’m here to put your name on the door. Yeah, that’s fine, I’ll be leaving in a little bit.

Ann seated in a love seat in her office near the small refrigerator reminiscence how she acquires the position. Moments later, tap, tap, and tap someone knocking on the door with their finger nail. Uh, yeah come in, she gets up only to go behind her desk. Ms. Colden, ma’am said Zack as he slowly comes in the office and leave the mail cart in the hallway. Hey ‘Z’, how’s the mail room asked Ann? Well, Ms. Colden it’s there. The AC is out again but I’m glad I’m doing a double shift so I can get it fix right away. While you guys are cooling up here, I’m just glad to pay a visit. Look ‘Z’ it may be cooler up here but when the heat gets going its boiling here responded Ann. Well Ma’am I’ll fix that to and here’s your mail and one assignment. As you can see I’m not just a mail clerk, more like a handy man. Thanks, but how do you know it’s an assignment? Well, Ms. Colden, all assignments are in a vanilla envelope with a blue seal and stamped confidential. Well, I need to get going; nice talking with you said Zack as he heads out the door. Oh! By the way ‘Z’ (Zack turns around) don’t call me ma’am, I’m still in my twenties. Sure thing Ms. Colden said Zack and closed the door. Ann takes a sip of coffee even though it was cold, made faces and took another
