    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to the late Chadwick Gentry (a.k.a. Boo Boo) and Melissa Edwards, two of the strongest people I know. It is through your inspiration to fight through your struggles that I have found the willpower to write this book.

    Introduction

As I was sitting in my high school class in September of 2001, daydreaming while I should have been paying attention, the teacher stopped dead in midsentence to turn on the television. To our surprise, we watched as Fox News replayed a day that changed America. By now you probably know what day I am talking about: 9/11.

As I watched the debris fly around in the sky from my desk, I wondered how the families of the victims were going to rebuild. How was America as a whole going to rebuild?

After a year had passed, the time that it took to clean up the dead bodies and debris from the attack, speculations had leaked out that President George W. Bush pledged to rebuild the Trade Center.

The dedication of the Trade Center has been done and it is open for business and tourism. But even though America has moved forward, how can you possibly rebuild from a situation like that? Thousands of lives were lost in one day. Thousands of individuals were directly impacted from the attack. Children will have to go through their lives without a father or mother. People in the Trade Center were at the peaks of their careers.

No matter how many years have passed, the inner struggle will still be there. The golden question will still exist for the families that were directly impacted by such a terrible attack: How can we rebuild?

Let’s fast forward. As I sit on my couch mustering up enough energy to write this paragraph, I am watching CNN discuss the mass shootings that have shattered several lives over the past decade.

It breaks my heart to hear this innocent mother say that her son would have been going into the fourth grade but that is not possible now because of a culprit. Another mother is sharing how her daughter was murdered in a movie theater. But what amazes me from listening is that both mothers are determined to rebuild, like President George W. Bush.

Have you ever faced a terrible situation that left you wondering, How am I going to rebound from this? If we are all honest, we all have asked that question once or twice in our lives. We are all rebuilding, whether you realize it or not. Think about it:

Your child just went off to college. It is time to rebuild.

You experienced a divorce. It is time to rebuild.

You lost a job. It is time to rebuild.

You moved to a new community. It is time to rebuild.

You lost a loved one. It is time to rebuild.

Your best friend walked out of your life. It is time to rebuild.

You just purchased a new home. It is time to rebuild.

I believe you get my point. Rebuilding is a phase in life we all will experience. Now, rebuilding your life is an option. You have to choose to rebuild from a divorce. You have to choose to rebuild from bankruptcy. You have to choose to rebuild from a lost job. You have to choose to rebuild from abuse. President George W. Bush had to choose to begin the process of rebuilding the World Trade Center. The two mothers who lost their children from a mass shooting had to choose to rebuild.

After I lost my mom at the age of ten, I had to learn how to go through life without her. After I lost my dad at the age of seventeen, I had to learn how to go through life without him. After I dropped out of high school, I had to learn how to rebuild. After the death of my younger brother, I had to learn how to go through life without him (I will share more about those experiences later in the book).

Let me pause and make a statement: Rebuilding is not easy. The process is treacherous and strenuous. But if you hang in there, you will experience a new life you never dreamed of having. You will experience a new peace, joy, and laughter.

The divorce is not the end.

The bad doctor’s report is not the end.

The lost job is not the end.

The failed exam is not the end.

The You are not accepted is not the end.

The You are not approved is not the end.

If you want to rebuild, the good news is that you can do it!

    The Story Behind the Book

I experienced a devastating situation a couple of years ago that brought me to my knees and sucked every ounce of faith I had out of me.

I received a phone call that a car had fallen on top of my brother. What? What was I going to do? How could I make it through this? Honestly, it probably was the first time in my life that I faced depression head-on. There were some days when I did not desire to get up and be productive. There were some days when I wanted to put my phone on silent and ignore the whole world. I was
