About this ebook

When 19-year-old Darby left college and headed to Africa many lives were changed. Hers, the people she came in contact with and those she left at home. Take 5 minutes out of your day and let her challenges build your faith and draw you closer to God.

When each of our children were born my husband and I dedicated them to God. We symbolically handed our infants to our pastor as a sign they belonged to God. He then handed them back symbolizing God entrusting them to us to raise and care for. When our second daughter, Darby turned 19 we again handed her over to God as we watched her board a plane for Africa. Letting go took on a whole new meaning.

The name of this book is Today because for a few minutes each day, that is what I hope you will focus on. It is so easy to let our minds race ahead and focus on what might happen, or to stay locked in the past, reliving what has happened.

My hope is that as you spend a couple of minutes reading each day’s thoughts, you will not focus on the past, which is over, or the future, so much unknown—but that you will receive what God has for you for today.

Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

    INTRODUCTION

    Playing with Barbies

My daughter Darby and I were sitting on the floor, playing with Barbies—and by playing I mean she was dressing them and driving them around in a pink plastic limo while I was holding a small, pink, plastic brush, trying to get the knots out of their hair. She was four. She looked so sweet and innocent, with her big, blue eyes and white-blonde hair. For some reason, I was praying for her while I was brushing the doll’s hair, and I asked God to use this little girl for His glory. I wanted to totally surrender her over to Him, whatever and wherever that meant. And while I sat there on the floor, pink plastic brush in my hands, the Creator of the universe spoke to me. I didn’t hear a booming voice echoing through my ceiling, and no writing appeared on my wall (I only wish). Amy Carmichael, in her book If, describes it well; it was almost as if spoken aloud to the inward ear. It was like words just appeared in my mind, all at once. And He told me He would indeed use Darby, and He would take her to the uttermost parts of the earth.

I blinked, and she was nineteen. I was dropping her off at the airport for her flight to Lira, Uganda. Granted, she had already traveled to Brazil and Nicaragua on mission trips, but this time was
