Dedication
To all the many wonderful people who have helped me in my quest for knowledge, in my journey of spiritual life, and for all those who will have the opportunity to read the thoughts shared here.
Preface
One summer day during a quiet time in a retreat, I observed water jets welling up from within a fountain and gushing continuous streams of water. Sun rays from above seemed to kiss the water streams, as the water jets buoyed and danced to the wind. The water jets flowed continuously and effortlessly. In a moment I was transfixed to a deeper reality, that Christ is described as the everlasting fountain of life. The water represented grace, freely given, freely flowing to all who dare to believe and trust in God’s promises. There was born in me, a strong desire to put this in writing and this consequently led to the writing of these pages.
Additionally, during this year of mercy, the personal witness and teaching of Pope Francis on joy of the Gospel and the mercy of God, has been like the miracle of the wine in the wedding at Cana. It’s fresh and reinvigorating, raising the dreams and hopes of many Christians and people of good will, all over the world. This has profoundly influenced my reflections and writing of this work.
Introduction
We live in a world where there is explosion of noise and so many options to choose from. The Television alone has about 189 cable TV channels. Unsuspecting consumers are bombarded with so many ads; it is almost impossible to make a sound decision. There seems to be continuous news of world catastrophe, a child molested. Refugees fleeing from war. Broken families. Then talk about the throw away culture; fast food, fast marriage and everything else seems disposable. All these can bring a weariness of spirit and confusion, unless we find something profound to direct our choices, focus our attention and fill our lives with.
This book is an attempt to offer a sense of direction and share some practical ways to center our lives, during this jubilee year of mercy. At a deeper level, it’s a prayer sharing, from a seekers heart to another. It is easy to identify with the Michelangelo’s non-finito statue¹ of the trapped prisoner. According to Michelangelo, the sculptor is a tool God uses simply to reveal the already magnificent figures existing in the marble. The sculptor task is to cut away the excess, to reveal. It’s further hypothesized that non-finito represents the eternal struggle of humans being to free themselves from material trappings. This endless struggle of man to free himself from his physical control is a symbol of the flesh burdening the soul. The prisoner seems to be calling to the artist (God) to set him free. This is so true in our lives, we spent most of time our reading self-help books, motivational, inspirational and better yourself books, because we have somehow figured out that the challenge of being the perfect self we were meant to be, has nothing to do with the external circumstances we find ourselves in. It is the internal struggles which are tough to overcome. If we follow Michelangelo’s thought, we have all our perfection within us already; we just need to chip away all the imperfections we have accumulated to reveal the finest self from within.
God has said that he created the human person in his own image and likeness. He is the king; we are the princesses and princess of
