About this ebook

Jay's book is worth reading as history, but also as a reminder of the existence of a basic human right that predates not only our constitution, but firearms themselves.
-DAVID KEENE, PRESIDENT, NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION

The liberals have succeeded in making honest householders defending home and hearth feel guilty when buying or using or even polishing a gun. After reading Jay Homnick's book you will never again feel that way. It is beautifully written and even inspiring.
- R. EMMETT TYRRELL JR., EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, THE AMERICAN SPECTATOR

Jay Homnick makes the moral case for what is truly at stake--each individual's right to defend his or her own life, and the lives of their family.
- GROVER A. NORQUIST, PRESIDENT, AMERICANS FOR TAX REFORM

Jay D. Homnick

Jay D. Homnick is Deputy Editor of The American Spectator, a leading magazine of politics and culture, based in Washington DC. His columns are noted for both wit and wisdom. He is also a Biblical and Talmudic scholar, relating traditional teachings to contemporary life. He is a passionate defender of the Constitution, hearing the echoes of Biblical enlightenment and morals in its principles. His three sons and five daughters fill him with joy and pride, although only daughter Ellie in high school and son Abraham in middle school keep the nest in Miami from going empty. His wife, Reva nee Berlin, went from actress in Hollywood, California, to Executive Director of a 500-family synagogue in Hollywood, Florida.

    FOREWORD

THIS BOOK HAS been a work in progress over about a decade. It was important to get it right, to study the source texts carefully, ponder them, and present them with clarity and depth. Every time it seemed ripe for publication, I took it back lovingly under my wing, to polish, to refine. The Word of God calls forth the utmost fealty and it must be handled with reverence.

In the wake this year of the awful massacres in San Bernardino, California, and Orlando, Florida, I was overcome by the image of citizenship defiled, of rights abused, of a new epidemic of evildoers for whom the Constitution is a weakness to be exploited. It is essential to remind ourselves that the Constitution is our strength, both as a nation and as individuals.

The rights it enshrines are partnered with responsibilities of citizenship. Indeed those who cherish the Second Amendment are the least likely among us to perpetrate violence in any circumstance.

It is clear now more than ever that the only way to guarantee these rights, and to ensure they are maintained with awe, is to locate their sources in the Bible. It is so disheartening to witness the Second Amendment assaulted by those who see the citizen not as a sovereign but as a subject. They trust none but a self-selected elite of the so-called best and brightest.

Although the Bible is a religious document – as is the Talmud which illuminates its shaded passages – it makes the case for an armed citizenry as a philosophical and moral premise that stands on its own.

Mankind has been granted individuality, the power to own property within God’s Creation, and governments are the result of those owners banding together to regulate their commerce and society. As such, the leaders take their powers from the citizens. These leaders may not deprive the governed of the essential right to protect themselves and their property.

It is time for these timeless principles to be clarified lest our defenders of freedom be stripped of the weapons of the mind. Please join me in reviewing the Biblical sources for understanding our
