Monologue: On the Shores of the River of Life
()
About this ebook
After my husbands passing, thoughts were whirling around in the vacuum created by his absence. Yes, my sounding board was gone, but slowly some of these thoughts began to voice themselves. What had once been dynamic dialogue morphed into a powerful monologue. Now in print, this Monologue just might elicit a response from some and even stimulate others.

o Our special friend, James B. Moldovan, a bilingual belles-lettres man, did not only greatly improve the English translation made by the author, but understood profoundly the spirit in which these pages were written.

To my forever husband
Iliuţǎ (Ilie, Lee) Chioariu,
in loving memory.
I am talking with you
about myself
me, whom
my mind alone
cannot dechiper
I am talking with myself
about you
you, who’s been waiting
for a long time
to get a real reflection
You are talking with yourself
you are talking with me
using words to their whole capacity
in words, as well as in silence
you, me: one entity

Monologue on the Shores
of the River of Life
Alexandra Roceric
As you open this volume—one proffered by a Romanian-born linguist and poet—you might be tempted to think, Aha! Another émigrée publication.
You could even suspect that Monologue springs from the emigrant experience—that relocating from Bucharest to Washington, D.C. might stand at the core of this very personal work. It does not.
Both the linguist and the poet love words and love using them well. Both the linguist and the poet are aware of the transformative power of the word and view this power with some degree of fear. They both love words, they both understand power of the word, and they both struggle to express words—especially in a personal narrative. More critically, they both attempt to make sense of life and to segment life’s transformational events precisely with words.
For this author that life-changing event was not the move to the New World,
but rather what happened afterwards—specifically meeting my husband, Iliuţǎ (as the Romanian says, Of eternal memory
). Iliuţǎ changed my life, he transformed my life, he completed my life. The current volume reflects my insights that come as a result of knowing him—happily—for more than 30 years.
I sincerely hope that you enjoy these words.
—Washington, D.C., Spring, 2016.
