PROLOGUE
Hawk had flown by the Jacaranda tree near the beach for weeks now. With his keen emerald eye, day after day, he had watched the slight movements of a cocoon perched far out on a low branch.
Today was different, though. The cocoon was open and a beautiful butterfly sat quietly with wings of the most stunning purple and gold – and the fullest lips Hawk had ever seen.
Hawk found the perfect spot to sit and watch, eager for Butterfly to take flight. That glorious first flight. He didn’t want to miss it.
The day passed on and there Butterfly was – still sitting on that low branch. As the sun sank into the horizon, Hawk watched patiently, never taking his eye off Butterfly. Stars emerged to reveal new light. But still Butterfly sat.
At the first sign of dawn, Hawk knew he could wait no longer.
Butterfly, I’ve been watching you work so hard to come out of your cocoon and become this gorgeous butterfly. How is it? It must feel amazing!
Thanks, Hawk,
said Butterfly. I have worked really hard to get here and it is good. It was exhausting, but I made it. I already know that I’m making the world a better place. People notice me, see the golds and purples on my wings, my big, full lips and their faces light up. I like that…
Butterfly turned away suddenly.
But…what?
Hawk asked.
As good as my life is now, as hard as I’ve worked to get out of my cocoon, it just feels like something is missing. I can’t explain it, but my heart just has this ache, like I’m meant to do more, be more! I feel like part of me is still stuck in this cocoon.
"You have remarkable colors and big lips, Butterfly, because you have big dreams. You are meant to be seen and be heard! You’re starting a new chapter in your life’s adventure and that’s challenging and wonderful,
