    The Quick Vacation - M. M. Beal

    Section 1

    Chapter 1

Would you call it a vacation when it was work? My work was being a jack-of-all-trades. But contrary to the end of the saying, I was good at all of them. This particular job was unusual though, at least for me. I was acting like a bodyguard to a twenty-one year old brat. Yea, it was a girl. I don’t think anyone but a Top Sargent WAC could have handled her. If she wasn’t singing some inane pop song to the invisible music in her headset, she was complaining that there was no TV. Sure wasn’t any TV. We were parked near the top of Bald Mountain West Virginia. It was as isolated as one could hope for. And that made the location perfect for my job. Protect this brat who had no sense of the woods. Hell she didn’t even have the sense of at the young holler girl at the dinner that we saw on our way there.

But it was a vacation for me. Away from the chaos of D.C. and all the rat races going on. If it wasn’t political, It was personal. Always intrigue, someone trying to get the upper hand. Trying to be King of the Hill, I guess. This work was a vacation for me from that quagmire that I had drifted into. It had been two years since I had been alone in the woods. Almost alone, except for Sophia, the brat.

Sophia had not a clue where we were. She had been out of it on coke and vodka when I had been given the assignment. Take her and protect her for the next three weeks. No questions asked and no answers provided. But the money was impressive. The attorney had taken me to the Burk Street apartment in Washington D.C. On the fourth floor we found that the family had the whole floor. The girl was passed out on the couch, having just returned from a tropical trip. Her bags were still on the floor.

After packing some more appropriate clothes for a mountain environment that I would be taking her to we awoke her. We guided her unsteady to my Jeep. Then we were off to points west. By the time she was fully awakened we were past the Virginia/Pennsylvania line and on the back roads to West Virginia where the Jeep was as ubiquitous as the deer.

When she came to, she was frightened. Thinking at first that she was being kidnapped. But reading the letter I had been given, put her more at ease. She recognized the signature and the snapshots enclosed. That was a relief, but only for a short time. Where are we? What are you doing? Let’s get to a city? I want a fix. I ignored her and she started to swing at me with her hand. Catching it in mid-air with my right hand it conveyed to her that it was futile to mess with me. Her only response was, What the fuck?

As nightfall began I stopped at the general store and diner at the crossroads where we would be veering into the mountain trail. Sophia immediately pulled out her cell and opened it. I knew that this was a silent area. No cells could connect, and the radio telescope in the next county was forbidden territory for communication. After a few desperate attempts she just started swearing. And Sophia could swear. The pretty young thing behind the counter paused filling my order when Sophia ranted away. Having God and fucking screamed interchangeably from the Capri clad city girl was almost more than this bible-belt Christian could fathom. With a shrug, I mumbled, daughters, who can understand? I told Sophia to turn off the phone as it was useless.

With a full tank of gas I finally got Sophia into the Jeep with the supplies and we made our way up the log trail. On this stretch of the road the uphills seem to go on and on. The headlights outlined a green tunnel of forest on either side of the trail for as far as the light showed. Even with heavy duty shocks, our butts bounced from one side of the seat to the other. The seatbelt kept our heads from hitting the car roof. Each major rut brought out another Shit from the brat.

Then, the headlights shone on a wild boar ahead of us. We both yelled as we stopped. She did not believe it was not a bear. Starting forward again we had to moved slowly. The animal moved back into the forest at the sound of our horn. Otherwise the scent of food in the vehicle would have brought him along with us as another passenger.

Leaving the edge of the forest at the end of the log trail we moved into the high meadow. Sophia questioned what we were doing and where we were going. I assured her that I knew this area like the back of my hand and it was to protect her. We left the smells and aroma of the forest perfume. Even Sophia commented on the fresh night air. At the top of the mountain another forest of conifers greeted us. Stunning majestic trees wound their way toward the sky. Although it was night, moonlight shimmered the outline of the landscape. Into the new growth we drove. It was only a few hundred yards when the cabin came into view.

The cabin had been erected for forest fire observers when towers were manned. It sat on a stone foundation and was constructed of rough hewn logs from the forest. A stone fire place and chimney provided any heat needed for the one room. Although it had been vacant for years before I discovered it, my sweat had cleaned it and it was excellent for a hideaway. Several times the past it had been used to escape - and hide.

After setting a fire to break the chill and to light the place I showed her the privy much to her amazement and apprehension. Sophia had by this time settled into a stoic or accepting mode. She had made no complaints since the logging trail. The letter she read must have settled her. What it said I didn’t know and didn’t care. I just had my job to do. Protect her. I unpacked the sleeping bags and gave her privacy. Sophia had changed into more appropriate clothes I had bought at the store, jeans, flannel shirt and brogans. She was in the bag and asleep when I returned. Her clothes and the new ones were on the floor beside her. I had to admit that this young girl looked as innocent as a baby.

Being exhausted I settled in the chair that had a view of the down hill area was open to me through the window. I slept with one eye open which was not hard when you get used to it over the years. During the night she moaned and mumbled in her sleep. Unintelligible, but foreboding. One would not have thought this girl would have had anything in her life to frighten her.

The sun’s rays broke through the trees about six and I saw through the window the fog nestled below us in the valley. This point offered an absolutely stunning view of the enormity of the mountains and valleys. I had once counted twelve mountain tops in a line from this vantage. Clear sunny days are a real surprise. Sophia interrupted me by shedding her sleeping bag, providing me another gift., A shear bra and mini panties outlined her almost plump body. She put on the shoes and dashed out into the woods to the privy. The day had dawned with a start.

When she returned I had drawn a pale of water from the pump at the side of the room. I was standing before the sink washing some fruit. Sophia clomped in with a complaint about freezing her ass off going to the privy. I replied that I couldn’t see much loss, to which we both laughed together for the first time of our journey. Dressed, she helped with the breakfast. It impressed me that she could break eggs and drop them in the iron skillet which we cooked over the fire place.

After breakfast Sophia asked what we would be doing all day. Very little, I told her. Just loaf and read, A meager library of paperbacks was located on the shelf next to the fireplace. We took a few books and settled on the porch in our rockers. Oh, my God, she said under her breath as two deer walked onto the yard, hardly twenty feet from us. They grazed and eyed us with impunity. We were in their territory.

The brat could not stand it more than a few minutes. She arose and the deer looked at her, at each other, then darted into the woods. I saw she had been using her phone taking pictures, click, click, click. With that interruption Sophia was determined to explore the area. With her, we entered the forest. The pine needles felt soft and silent as we made our way from tree to tree. We did not see the deer again but other fauna kept the photos going. This city girl behaved like a brownie scout out for the first time. Squirrels, birds, and even a couple of nameless snakes. The snakes did not startle her. Surprise.

I didn’t want to wander too far from the cabin. As we returned the sun beamed down from the high mountain sky. It had grown very hot. Can’t pass up this sunshine, she said, removing the flannel shirt. She started to work on
