Southern Love & Waterloo - Trina Warren

    ‘Southern Love’

    #1

She was sitting alone on the steps. It was extremely dark outside. There were no stars in the sky. The clouds covered them and they were dark, also. It was sprinkling rain. The drops were falling lightly everywhere.

Louise had her favorite hat on her head. It was made of light and dark denim. The floppy head piece covered her forehead. She had on a blue parker with her hands in her pockets.

An orange - stripped tabby cat walked by, on the sidewalk. Another darker cat walked up to her from across the street. A basset hound walked by on the sidewalk from the other direction. Then an owl flew to a tree close by in front of her apartment building. It looked her and she heard: who, who, who. She did not know, yet.

She slowly got up as the rain drops became heavier. Slipping through her door, she turned on a light and went inside. Louise lit a candle, turned out the light, and carefully climbed the stairs to the rest of her dwelling. She set the candle on a small oblong, wooden table. She could see dimly with the small flame glowing in the blackness. The floorboards creaked underneath the carpeting. Feeling lonely was not very much fun for her. Louise was used to being with her father at night. He had been gone for 9 years. She even skipped the funeral because she didn’t want to see his dead body. When she thought about the ceremony later, uncaring for the guests - was how she felt it looked like, without her there.

Louise became a work-aholic. Sometimes she kept 3 jobs at a time. Hard work was good for her. It made her feel like she was worth something since her father wasn’t around to tell her anymore. Meeting lots of people was important, too. She went on some dates, but she hadn’t met her future lover, yet. And Lou was still a virgin.

Travis moved to Alabama the following day. He started renting the apartment behind hers. When he introduced himself, he was in the process of ‘moving in’. Louise offered to help carry the few pieces of furniture into his new home.

After they’d finished, Lou invited Travis for a simple dinner to become more acquainted. He accepted immediately. They shared fish and chips and some lemonade. The lemonade was freshly squeezed and Travis was in love.

Louise had loved Alabama her whole life. The people there were the nicest and most polite anywhere. Now, she had a new love that didn’t feel like just infatuation: He was tall, good-looking, dark-skinned, had black hair, and crystal blue eyes. And he dressed like the decent guy he appeared to be. Not too clean-cut, but just right. His hair was long and wavy. His sweats and tank top showed off his gorgeous physique.

They went to a college football game that same weekend. The weather was warm. Stars sparkled in the dark heavens. Lots of people showed for the game. They bought popcorn and gatorade and sat in the stands. They cheered together for their home team, cuddling as the weather cooled. Travis drove Lou to their apartment building and parked in the back of it. The orange striped Tabby cat greeted them at the front door. Lou invited both of them inside and served the small creature some tuna on a dish. Travis and Lou ordered some pizza from a local pizza parlor. Then they went to a night-club and danced for a couple of hours.

Louise was really ‘falling’ for Travis. He was the sweetest man she had ever met. She’d dated lots of men she had wanted to date. None of them had ever been good enough for her to marry, though. She’d waited for the right one to come along. She was glad she had waited.

Louise worked at a movie theatre. She worked with the film projector and sometimes helped with selling tickets at the ticket office. Her boss was very protective of her.

She also had a job with a modern high-class clothing store. (She was a merchandise clerk). And helped clean a laundramat. Travis was a physical education teacher. He taught at the local college. He really enjoyed his job. He even coached. The students were the BEST!

Louise was selling tickets when Travis walked through the doors - after he left work. He asked if he could help in any way. He got to serve popcorn, soft drinks, and candy. He was having so much fun until some huge good-lookin’ guy bought a ticket from Lou. He asked her if she was seeing anyone. She told him that she was. He asked her if she’d ever consider going on a date with him. She told him ‘no’. When he went to the concession stand, Travis got told Louise had turned him down.

Travis smiled the rest of the night. He went up to the projection room where Lou was. She was so beautiful. She had long blonde hair and big brown eyes. She was so vibrant, so pretty, so sexy…

He wished that he could ‘have her’ right there. When he got near her - his heart quivered, his pulse quickened, and his lips trembled. He finally asked her if she would calm him down. He felt like he was losing control. Louise turned around and caressed his arms. Then she rubbed his shoulders and stroked his back. She kissed him on the lips - next - then she told him he wasn’t welcome up where she was. Travis turned around and went back down to the stand. A lot of college students were in line for refreshments. The movie playing was a recent film. Louise’ job was a ‘breeze’.

Travis waited for Lou to finish after he closed the concession stand. Lou had her car door opened for her by her friend & she decided she almost liked his car better than hers, but at least as much as hers. He drove a red Mustang. Louise drove a black Dodge.

The passenger side of the red sports car was very comfortable. Travis drove to the citys’ park and parked the car by an incline filled with rocks and some water driveling from it. He pulled a small box out of his pocket. It was a soft mauve jewelry holder. Travis gave it to Lou and asked her: Will you marry me?

Yes! Yes - I’ll marry you! I love you SO MUCH!

    I love you like CRAZY!

Do you want to meet my mother?

    I’d love to.

She lives in Montgomery. We could drive there this weekend?

    I’d love to!

    I’ll make you SO HAPPY!

    I’ll make you SO PROUD!

Travis hugged and held Louise for what seemed like an hour. He held her hand all of the way home. Louise started asking him where they would live:

    Anywhere you’d like.

Oh, Travis! I know you’re going to be good to me! You’re the best and most wonderful man in the world!

You’re the most lovely woman I’ve ever laid my eyes on. I can’t wait to see you with all your wrappings off.

    Keep talking to me.

It’ll be the best wedding you could ever imagine!

I know it will. I think God chose us for each other. Can you feel it?

Yes - I feel it…And I can’t wait to feel all of you!

Lou had 3 sisters: Lori, Jolene, and Maxine were chosen as bridemaids for the wedding. Travis had Tom be his best man. Lou’s mother loved Travis’ first impression so much that she invited him to join the family. Travis accepted with much gratitude:

    Welcome to our family.

Thank-you very much Mrs. Trecker. I have always fantasized about this and this being real has always seemed so far away. Some things happen so fast!

Glad to have you in the family, Son.

And we expect you to extend our family. I know you’ll treat my daughter with extreme amounts of love and tenderness. Please take excellent care of her for me and for yourself and our future and our name.

    Yes, mam.

We have a honeymoon suite ‘booked’ for you by the ocean.

    Thank-you, so much!

"We love you now and always will expect the best of you. Please leave with our respect and trust. May your days and nights always be filled with happiness and love.

We all love you - Travis, the 3 sisters chorused.

I couldn’t be happier if I tried. You’re the in-laws of my dreams, but you’re real. What did I ever do to deserve such great people in my family?

You fell in love with my daughter.

    Thank-you, God.

The red Mustang was covered with white painted letters on its’ windows. Colorful streamers hung from the back of the car & trailed after it. Travis drove him and Lou to a resort by the ocean.

The weather was not as cold as it could have been. It was near winter-time. As soon as they arrived at the motel, they bundled up in their warm jackets and went for a walk. The ocean’s waves were soothing to watch and hear while they looked and listened as they strolled by it.

Lou bowed down to Travis and took his hands:

Travis, I love you too much for my own good, I guess. But I’ll never do anything to hurt you - I swear it! I’ll always love you and do anything for you. You’re the man of my dreams! I couldn’t be happier!

"Lou, I never thought I’d find anyone like you. It seems like I waited
