Author

Stella G. Taylor

Stella is a budding author. Encouraged by her teachers at school, she started writing this book when she was 9. After being pushed by her parents to put her pencils down before she turned 11, she finally set her mind to completing it! Stella is modest about her perfect FCAT writing score. She has written short plays, extempore, poems and has won multiple writing awards such as PTA Reflections, and has been a finalist in many local competitions. Armed with the confidence gained from these achievements, she embarked on a journey to write this fantasy book. She is also quite an artist, and has received several awards. All of the illustrations in this book were created by Stella and were digitized to be placed in the book. Stella would like 50% of the proceeds from this book to go towards her school, Indian Trace Elementary. This book may be a small offering, but for Stella it’s an opportunity to share her imagination with the world and inspire other young authors. Everyone can write!

    DEDICATION

To my loving parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors, teachers, after-care school counslers, Molly, my dog for her unconditional love, and to my pesky brother (who also happens to be my first reader).

    Thank you all!

Without your support and patience I would have never achieved my dream of writing my very first book.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I would like to thank all my teachers at Indian Trace Elementary, especially my favorite fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Koche, who believed in my writing and allowed me to write the Iliad play and read aloud my writing to the class. To my school principal, Ms. Winder, who always got super excited about my poems and shared them with her peers.

To my editor, Ms. Grimes, who carefully corrected my mistakes without altering my original handwritten book and made my book sound great, and to Ms. Leanne for giving life to my pencil sketches and digitizing the illustrations.

To my good friends and classmates who encouraged me and also shared with me the greatest friendships and fun times.

To my parents, without whose help this book would never have been completed and printed!

Thank you all so much. I have so many words of thanks for these amazing people. They have all made a great impact on my life.

    PREFACE

I was inspired to write this book by my aftercare teacher, Ms. Paulina, whom I had during my fourth grade. She mentioned to me that she was writing a book; and that got me excited and thinking… Of course, my book is just a small effort compared to hers, but for me it was an opportunity to get out there and share my imagination with the world and inspire other young authors.

I know most kids love the magic that fantasy books create, and how they stimulate their imagination. I wrote this book because I want to inspire children to write by allowing their unique imaginations to take flight.

Maybe when you were younger you wanted to write a book and pursue your dream, but you thought your book wasn’t good enough. If you believe in your work, you can take a chance and try to succeed. I said to myself, If you start something, don’t leave it half-complete. When you start something original and you finish it you have a sense of achievement and pride. I would like to encourage kids like me to do just that.

    Everyone can write!

    PROLOGUE

"Hello, my name is Katherine Thompson. Let me tell you about my life. A few years ago my sister ran away; I couldn’t understand why she would do that and leave me and our parents desolated. We waited for her to return, but she never came. My family and I gave up on her and we moved on with our lives. One year after her disappearance, my parents decided we would go camping. My father went to go get wood for a campfire, but ten hours later we realized that he had vanished. The park ranger said he had been attacked by a vicious animal,
