    EPILOGUE

    INTRODUCTION

Years ago, a group of campers got marooned in a dense forest and couldn’t find their way home. All the bush paths they were using had terminated. The campers had no tracker or any transmitting electronic device; they couldn’t even locate any human settlement around them. For days they kept moving in the forest festooned with thick mangroves, giant trees with their buttress roots, epiphytes, crocodile swamps, thick gnarled shrubs and many more. Besides, wild animals are also present even though they had yet to encounter the most deadly ones.

Their leader was at the front making pathway with the cutlass he was holding while others followed. Their food stuff was fast running out even though some of the campers have been refusing food. The condition became more and more bleak such that the members of the team could only imagine terrible ends, though no one spoke out his fears.

Suddenly, a brainwave occurred to one of the campers, and he appealed to the whole group to wait a bit while he finds the tallest tree around he can climb. He immediately went for one of the tallest trees, climbed it and behold, a village settlement is just a shouting distance of say two kilometers away. All they need do is to just go backwards a bit due east. He immediately descended from the tree, collected the cutlass and led the group safely to the warm reception of the villagers. Now, that is leadership on the path of both their leader and the member who finally led them to safety. Both men are leaders, but one is a better leader than the other. One led them for days on a cycle without knowing while the other led them for half an hour to their destination.

Before you make your judgments on both men and the entire group, first ask yourself sincerely what you would have done to help the situation if you had been part of the campers! You see? it’s easy to criticize leaders while only few are ready to come up with helpful suggestions.

A lot of lessons can be learnt from the travail of these Adventurers namely: patience, resilience, calm, foresight, insight, hindsight, submissiveness, creativity. That is leadership. The great leader steps in when there is nothing anyone else can do to save the situation when things are going from bad to worse, defiling every strategy and rendering the wise stupide- the true leader will always steps out.

Leadership is defined as the ability to influence others’ actions so that they can willingly contribute their quota towards the achievement of organizational goals. The concept of leadership is not to be confused with rulership or official appointments. Merely being appointed a Director, Commander, Imam, Bishop, Minister, Commissioner et al doesn’t make one a leader one has to evince the characters of a leader in order to merit being called a leader. To become a leader one doesn’t have to occupy offices or exalted positions or even bear spiraling pompous titles. Like Rev Martin Luther King observed, leadership is not rocket science-you don’t need to be a genius or some special breed of superhuman to be a great leader. You just need to be you.

You can be a leader by merely being who you are. Just living your life in an exemplary fashion can be enough to effect changes and lead revolution in your field of calling. Just choosing to do it right no matter what can positively influence others around you even though you may be loathed for doing so. Socrates became the leader of modern philosophy by simply living his life as a moralist. He was just a lawmaker and an ex infantry soldier with no appointment but yet, his approval is regarded as the last word in human wisdom.

Now that the world is becoming smaller and smaller due to the giant leaps of communication technology and unprecedented advance of the information age, the task of leadership just got messier and more cumbersome, as leadership is not defined by the highest education obtained or exposure gotten but by the amount of positive impact one is able to impress in his spheres of contact.

Leadership is an indispensible issue everywhere, the world over, be it in the military, civil, religious, academic, social, corporate and international environments. It becomes pertinent to get people who will lead the world in the different localities and vocations so that we would all one day attain the Utopian era we have all been dreaming about right from our crèche days and kindergarten classes or at least move some miles closer. A better world is possible. A better universe is possible. A better you is possible. To get something done is as simple as just starting somewhere and starting right now no matter how ‘small’ and ‘insignificant’.

By and large, to become a leader you first have to begin with yourself. You need to know your inner mechanisms and the dynamics of your mindset. You need to first know you thoroughly. Charity, they say, begins at home. The home is not the house but you that live in it. Your strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats need to be identified and maximized. In fact, by knowing yourself, half of your journey as a great leader is completed. King Solomon the wise stated millennia ago that greater is the man that controls his mind than the one that conquers a city. It doesn’t just end in knowing yourself but, it goes to knowing your environment which includes the people around you and the terrain of your habitation. As Nicolo Machiavelli will put it: a leader must seek understanding in order to maneuver his principality.

Look at Africa and you can see extreme dearth of leadership and its worst consequences at a glance. A continent with the most prodigious amount of natural resources including minerals of all kind, wildlife, thick virgin forest and water bodies in their pristine beauty yet its people are constantly being displaced by wars and economic problems. Every year, thousands of African youths get drowned in the Red Sea. In their attempt to cross over from Morocco to Canary Island or to Spain in order to seek ‘greener’ pastures. Children are starved beyond recognition epitomized by transparent rib cages and blotted tommy. Adults and children go about cladded in rags yet, she is supposed to be the continent with the most natural endowment; no Sunami threat, no Typhoon, no earth quake, no flooding,. The only problems in Africa is leadership induced. I mean man made disasters such as wars, animosity, nepotism, religious unrest, culture of corruption, terrorism, rebellion, armed robbery, kidnapping, 419, neo colonialism and so on, you name it.

Think of Latin America and what comes to your imaginations are drug scourge, terrorist groups, rebellion, Western induced political crises, pervert crime surge et al. These are problem that beg for leadership attention.

Enter Asia and you see the threat of nuclear war looming in the middle east alongside the intifada and Zionism. Going South-East and you find the war threat at latitude 38 – degrees between the Koreas, famine, and economic crises.

Going over to North America and you find the problems of moral decadence, unbridled expressionism, political attrition, homosexuality, juvenile delinquency, rising wave of homicide and suicide, collapsing family values, abuse of religion, denial of God, promiscuity and so on. The list is inexhaustible. The same goes with Europe and added to that is the problem of racism and racial supremacy.

In the financial sector, more and more revelations are being made and more erstwhile corporate gurus are being escorted to the prison yard almost daily due to dishonesty, abuse of executive position, get-rich-quick syndrome, disregard for statutory regulatory laws and financial misappropriations among others.

It is no longer news that the clergy is not left out in the Kleptomanian race to acquire everything at the expense of their congregation. The pastors are even part of child abuse, homosexuality, ritual killing, embezzlement and all what not yet, these are supposed to be the moral custodians of our societies and even to some extent, the torch bearers for political leaders. Imams have been caught pant down with minors and peoples wives. Some have even told lies, misleading their people’s to stir up religious conflicts which have taken the lives of millions in the third worlds.

In the military, commanders who are able to instill discipline and professionalism among their ranks are scarce. How many military commander do one find around who can still command the respect of their men assuming the men are given the freedom to obey or not to obey even in difficult circumstances.

The entertainment industry is not helping matters either’s, young adults now look up to showbiz stars to determine their own life style in terms of fashion, vocabulary, behavior and even religious life. Lesser and lesser emphasis are being laid on qualitative education. Virtually all the educative programs on TV and radio are being hastily replaced by reality TV shows, talent hunt shows, musicals, movies and what more. Engineers, Lawyers, Doctors, Nurses, Professors and other technocrats are no longer fantasized by youngsters when it comes to choosing lifestyles and vocations. The rate of failures and exams malpractices are growing at unprecedented rates. One doesn’t need to look too far to see that more and more teenagers live in rooms with wall marts of pornography – half naked stars and pornographic pictures all around. How does one expects such a child to do well in exams, behave well and let alone take over leadership from the present generation in the future.

Abraham Lincoln over a hundred years ago decried the alarming rate at which Americans were abandoning moral values and God. Because in his opinion, these were what made America. To throw God out is to court doom. If only Lincoln has seen this present generation of people and leaders in the world, he would have considered his generation to be 99% righteous.

The world is in abject dearth of leadership. The world needs people like you who have armed themselves with the right leadership mindset to turn things around. Again, you don’t need to become the President of your country or the Governor of your state to turn things round. You can start by your daily ordinary actions right from now on. If everyone abandons the public toilet after use, don’t join them. Take time to flush it. You never know who and who is watching. Don’t join others in littering the environment, just take a few seconds and drop that can of yoghurt you just finished drinking in the nearest litter bin. The earth is groaning.

You can lead the next revolution. The world need you. What you need to change your world is right inside you. As John Maxwell would conclude: everything rises and falls on leadership. It begins with you.

Think of Muhathir Bin Mohammad who as President turned Malaysia from a pawperish third world economy into an industrial giant of global scale. The entire business community cannot ignore Malaysia, a South-East Asian Tiger. The inspirational leadership provided by Mahathir Bin Mohammed during his twenty-two years of building the great Malaysia of today and the future will ever stand him out as an exceptional leader in history irrespective of what people in the west or elsewhere thought by describing him and his fellow revolutionaries as illiterates when they started their economic restructuring programs.

Deng Xiaoping is credited to being the architect of Chinese economic and political emergence as a world giant. Deng’s economic revolution of China was hatched from the "Ten-year-plan for economic development. This bill for the ten-year economic development of China didn’t pass in to the law with ease even though it was to pivot the equilibrium of China from the economic mess she was languishing in – abject poverty.

This great bill like any epoch making program from a great leader which is to make history was opposed by the former. First lady of China who was an influential member of the Chinese parliament. Mao’s Tzedong’s wife Jiang Qing in 1975 almost killed the liberation of China by this singular act.

But wait a little, the same Deng Xiaoping that is regarded as the librator of modern day China was the one who in 1989 ordered the people’s libration Army of China to massacre millions of protesters around Tianaman square in Central Beijing when the people were protesting the down turn of the economy occasioned by Government policy and spiraling inflation.

The same Mao Tzedong known as the chairman whose wife faught against Deng was the one who brought about the cultural revolution of China by forbidding unpermitted interactions with the outside world particularly the west.

President Silvio Balusconi of Italy, a plutocrat and larger their life personality is one man with many scandals who is still as loved as he is hated due to his comments and randy antics by the Italian people. He is the only president in Europe who can respond to an allegation of having sex with an eighteen year old model by the press by saying, "why should I pay for sex when the fun of it is actually in chasing the one you love," and still remain in power.

Jacob Zuma of South Africa is one man who even as a presidential aspirant weathered the storms of financial embezzlements and sex scandals to win elections and make it as the president of South Africa even against the wish of the incumbent Thabo Mbeki.

This whole hodge-podge permutations and juxtapositions of eerie and events creating heroes and villains, victors and vanquishes, and transforming the life of people by basically promoting and protecting their interests accentuates the dynamics of leadership. This uniqueness of greatness are some of the things that will make you know THE LEADER THAT YOU ARE!

    CHAPTER ONE

    WHO AM I

There are two great moments in a person’s life. The first is when you are born. The second is when you discover why you are born.

    - Unknown

Socrates, the great philosopher often charged his students to know themselves. According to Socrates, man has to look inwards into himself to bring out virtue which he considers to be knowledge.

When you ask most people the question. Who are you? it’s really interesting what you hear most people say. During interviews, most prospective candidates simply go on blowing their trumpets and bragging empty while some just blabber mouth in their amateur attempt to lie. Just a few say the right thing by being natural and concise in summarily answering the question which basically requires a brief elucidation of one’s education, background, and experience as they relate to the job they are being interviewed for.

During such personal analysis, employers simply want to know the abilities – acquired or natural which the applicants has which make him the right person for the job.

Hence, employers like to hear: the name, followed by the trainings and then the psychological dispositions or hobbies. These on their own do not define a person. There are much more in a person that even he himself knows most of the time.

Man is a tripartite being. Man is as much a spiritual being as he is physical. Most of what we know about ourselves has to do with the physical. The spiritual side is so submerged that most people, especially the so called materialists, do not believe in its existence. The psychological part of man is an integral part of the spiritual. And the fact is that the physical is under the control of the spiritual that is why until a man’s mind set is changed, very little can be done about his conditions.

Doctors especially the open minded, non-parochial ones now know that it is wisest to support the physical effort of trying to heal a patients with boosting the patient’s moral as well as soliciting for prayers on the persons behalf. When your thought towards people are bad, it very likely their actions will work against you most of the time even if they are unaware of your evil thoughts. Evil thoughts can affect people’s activities or plans. Be careful the kind of people who unveil your plans to. Not everyone means well even when they all smile in apparent approval.

The things we say are forces which are capable of catastrophic consequences, but because their effect are not immediate, we tend to ignore their potency. If people say bad against others or wish them evil, except God intervenes, it is very likely such things are going to come to pass someday, especially where such curses are due to injustice. Bill Newman said during one of his preachings in the prison yard, when he told some group of prisoners that they are in prison because someone once said they will go to jail, most of the prisoners were surprised. Yes, that is the fact. But spiritual facts are not as tangible as laboratory apparatus to be readily and immediately scientifically verified in a test tube or weighed on the beam balance.

To know who you are, you need to look inwards and search yourself. Try to communicate with your inner man by observing quiet times preferably early in the morning or late in the evening in isolated places. Remember most importantly, such quiet time has to be in quietude.

Do try to ask yourself questions on who you are, why you were created, and what you are created to do. And also you have to know why you were created for your own generation. As Albert Einstein rightly puts it, God doesn’t play dice with the cosmos. Man is not an accident as the Henry Gustav’s Big Bang Theory puts it. The big bang may just be the process of creation used to bring about the universe by Almighty God. Do you assume a coke bottle you found while drilling for oil five hundred meters below seabed got there on its own? Common, someone somehow got it there. You are created for a peculiar purpose as a person that is why you weren’t born a hundred years ago or yet to be born.

Only when you are quiet and calm can you begin to chart a course for your life from this very day based on the revelation you have had as regards who you are. Like Garry Fellers would say "only a calm water produces a clear image".

A great Indian mystic admonished his adherents to always washes their soul in silence every day. Think of the great personalities that ever walked the surface of the earth and you will notice the aspect of quietude they often had occasioned by loneliness and solitude. Lack of quiet times and quiet reflections can as a matter of fact cause apparently loud and celebrated people to feel drained, loose some self- confidence, or even contemplate suicide without knowing exactly what the problem is.

You can only think better when you stop not while moving. So why not occasionally take time off your busy schedules to think things out. You don’t have to be an inventor or monk to reserve thirty minutes a day for looking inwards. Remember, great men have gotten their inspirations from this. Socrates was known to think for hours and occasionally got lost in thought deaf to the environment and physical happenings.

There was an occasion in which Socrates accompanied by a friend was headed for a friend’s dinner party when suddenly a problem came to his mind and he stood in the cold, lost in thought trying to fathoms out things. He stood there unmoved for hours and deaf to his friend’s plea to come and go to the party. At last the friend went to the party alone and Athagones, the host asked about the whereabouts of Socrates, but the friend responded; "Socrates is out there, He wouldn’t listen to anyone or feel anything. He is out there by the neighborhood porch".

Now, you don’t have to be an extremist like Socrates to discover yourself and be great. All you need is take some time to listen to yourself if you don’t listen to yourself, the days roll out very quickly and you one day suddenly discovered your life has been wasted years all through. The same is true with your friends, families and relations. No matter your tight schedule take time for them, They are your life. The purpose for which you work forty hours a week is for a happy life which is domiciled in your family. If you are the type that never finds time for his family but is always working, before you know it, things have gone too bad. Your little girl must have grown into a wild woman by the time you realize things, if you didn’t give her adequate attention. The same apply to the boys as well. May it not be that as a parent, the most time you had attention for your children are when you have to bail them from one troubles or when you need to go visit them regularly in the accident ward after they must have ended a party with the devastating consequence of alcohol.

A certain priest in the U. S. was a very wonderful man of God. He was a great councilor that spent most of his life in the religious duties of attending to confessions, counseling the broken hearted and praying, until and one day his father called. The father told him of how he has neglected his immediate family and his insensitivity to their psychological needs. Not that the priest didn’t make sure his family are comfortable financially or physically but that he doesn’t spends time with them. He was often brief whenever he visits or calls.

The priest promptly made amends and gave his family attention. Thereafter, he experienced greater happiness. By carrying your family along, you build your life and the world feels more confortable since you are a part of the family.

After getting to know your purpose the next is your.

    ABILIITES

Ability is anything one is capable of doing. When one finds it easy to get something done in an area in which most people find it very difficult or nearly impossible to do such ability is regarded as talent.

Everyone has talent in one field or the other but over ninety percent of people live and die without ever discovering their exceptional abilities. According to a research made by two social scientists, everyone has the ability to do something better than the next ten thousand people. See, if you can sing better than the next ten thousand people. If you indeed can sing better than them then you are talented. If you have looks that is better than many people not necessarily everybody around you, then you are talented with good looks. Yes! Good looks is talent. It bring as much active and passive goodwill as other forms of talent.

The picture is clearer when we all compare ourselves with our immediate friends. One may be more gifted in mathematics than the rest. While someone else may be more gifted in literature. Another may be more gifted in natural science and so on. It may even be that one person is more gifted in all the subjects than others. But he or she cannot be more gifted in everything that the rest. In applied sciences or law, for example, one fellow may be exceptional in cramming or committing information to memory word for word while his other colleague who may not be as much gifted with memorizing voluminous details may distinguish himself in analyzing complex knotty problems to the simplest and convincing term for viable solutions to be unraveled. Think of it. If he is much more gifted academically someone else might be better gifted than him in human relations. Knowing that you can achieve even more in life from human relations than from academics!

You are better than the rest of us in one area. Go and look for that area now! The purpose of man’s creation is to discover his divinely endowed ability which he is created to unleash without which he cannot find fulfillment.

Show me the happiest people and I will show you somebody that has found his purpose of existence. Be that as it may, some people are able to display exceptional abilities in many fields. Hence, the saying jack of all trade and master of none is a fad and no well-meaning person should believe that. People should only do as much as they have the strength and time to adequately commit themselves in order to produce the best result. So if you have the strength and time to be excellent in multiple areas why not?. The human brain is the most complex computer ever made. The brain has an astonishing memory capacity and unbelievable processing ability unknown even to the people that have it.

Studies by a group of soviet neuro-surgeons revealed that; the human brain can store all the information in the Russian encyclopedia, memorize all the courses in a dozen colleges, and do much more. The brain is made up of about fifteen billion nerve cells each equivalent to an invention. If this is true why question the ability of Thomas Edison who had over a hundred and forty inventions to his credit before his death?

The same applies with people like Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilee et al. Leonardo de Vinci was a great mathematician, physicist, artist, theologian, engineer, and above all, a prescient scientist. He already drew the helicopter, motorcycle, submarines and motor car 500 years before their invention.

Something has to be clearly understood when talking of abilities. Human abilities are basically divided into three groups, viz; spiritual, intellectual and physical. All these abilities could be found in association or in isolation but are often interdependent. Let’s look into them with a more objective attention.

    SPIRITUAL ABILITY

Spiritual ability enables people who have them to do things inexplicable by any physical means or by intellectual wisdom. In fact, a magic that can be explained based on scientific phenomena is science. But once a stunt cannot be explained by human theories or existing natural laws, it becomes spiritual. A scientist once posited that "a well developed technology is indistinguishable from magic".

To launch a rocket to the moon is no big deal. We all know how it works from our knowledge of classical physics. According to Newton’s law of motion, action and reaction are equal and opposite. By burning and expelling fuel the rocket gains momentum and moves upwards in opposite direction to the exiting gas.

Secondly, for the rocket to escape the influence of the earth’s gravitational force, it must travel faster than the escape velocity, which is about eleven thousand kilometers per second. Simple and incontestable isn’t it? Stop saying what goes up must surely come down!

But how does one explain it for a man to ascend in to heaven without any mechanical means of propulsion such as aerofoil, wings, turbos, jets etic?

Examples of spiritual abilities are: prophesy, vision, clairvoyance, witchcraft, necromancy, prescience, healing power, disappearance and reappearance, healing power, magic and unfathomable intellect.

Spiritual abilities are either divinely inspired or demonically inspired. Some are born with them, some discovered them along the line as they grow older, while some got them by association.

Most people had some of these abilities while growing up but lost them along the line. Often, we all know of people with one spiritual ability or the other presently or formally.

We have seen pastors like Reinhardt Bonke of Germany, Oral Robert of the U. S. A.., T. B. Joshua of Nigeria, and many more heal the sick of medically incurable ailments such as cancer, HIV, Leukemia, Kidney failure, Paralysis, mental disorders and so on. Similarly, we have all been entertained by magicians physically during which they did stunts that no one can explain.

Similarly, there are people who had the ability to see things far beyond their times such as; Nostradamus, Leonardo da Vinci et al. You probably know of a friend, neighbor, cleric, relative or someone around you with the unusual ability to tell of what they had in their dreams and later see it manifest in the physical.

Do not try to pursue spiritual powers if you are not so endowed by God. As doing so could result in devastating consequence in the life of the seeker!

Psychological ability is also part of spiritual ability, but on the lower spectrum of it. Some are good in understanding people no matter how complicated on first contact. Some are good with knowing who did what and why and some are good at reading other people’s mind and knowing exactly how to win them at any given time or circumstances.

Knowing your psychological ability as a leader goes a long way in sharpening your skills when dealing with people of diverse back ground. Hence, knowing your psychological ability is one thing. Maximizing your spiritual ability to your good and that of everyone is another.

    INTELLECTUAL ABILITY

The ability acquired through learning which is committed to the memory and in to the reflex action is called intellectual ability.

Hence, intellectual ability becomes invalid when it cannot be memorized. The human brain can be trained to respond more speedily to one aspect of learning than the other. Some are good with crunching numbers, while some are better with literature and the arts, intellectual ability is better developed from childhood. At age five, the human brain completes it growth. Hence, a child can be taught to do just anything an adult can do, the only limitation being strength and experience. In other words, an adult is only better than a kid in terms of strength and experience.

A teacher or lecturer may be more knowledgeable than his students but may not be as intelligent as some of them. Downright, need it be said that people shouldn’t be surprised about childhood prodigies as we humans have all been created to do a lot of things even to our own bewilderment.

People like: Albert Einstein, who was named man of the twenty-first century; Isaac Newton; Thomas Edison; and Nobel Laureates are all paragons of people with intellectual abilities. It is said that people’s IQ (intelligence quotient) increases as they study and read more. Therefore, it is pertinent for people with average or below average intellect or IQ to read more if they intend to raise their intelligence Quotient. The IQ is increasable within a
