Introduction
There is a growing epidemic among men in our modern culture. We have forgotten what it means to be real men. The reason? Well, there are several.
To truly understand why, it will take a brief history lesson . . .
In the era of World War II, those coming out of the Great Depression were entering into a new age of American history.
The Great Depression had devastated the job market. Almost 25% of men lost their livelihoods. Wives had no choice but to look for work to help their husbands support the family. The very women men were supposed to be providing for and protecting ended up having to fulfil their role. In losing their purpose, men lost a portion of their identity.
Then, the United States entered World War II. While men were called to warzones, women fled to factories, taking jobs to support the war effort. Those who survived the Depression and the war, being no longer consumed with the suffering and deprivation inflicted by such extensive national unrest, were in a prime place to start their lives anew. Droves of men flocked home and sought to marry and build families.
As this social migration occurred, something incredible remained. In Tom Brokaw’s book The Greatest Generation, he explains, They did not abandon their sense of duty and service to their community and nation. Indeed, it was encoded in them as a result of their personal experiences.
Among this generation was a true commitment to live selflessly, to live for a cause greater than themselves.
After the war, the United States entered a time of peace. Jobs were created and the country flourished. This lead to the economic boom of the 1950’s. The time of hardship had passed and the typical American family no longer faced such daunting financial strain.
When this change swept across our nation, I believe attitudes about money also began to change.
It's a natural human desire to want the best for our children, and when there is no lack of resources, we tend to buy more material items for our children than we would during difficult economic times. As a result, our values began to change. Individualism and the desire for material wealth took place of selflessness and the good of all.
Unfortunately, due to this shift, men have fallen a long way from the greatness the extraordinary generation exuded. Over time, generations have forgotten the values of duty, virility, and selflessness that were once held high in American culture; and have instead taken up more passive, effeminate qualities. This is what I affectionately call the Wussification of America.
Perhaps this transition can be boiled down to the passing of an era—men who came after the Greatest Generation
were no longer required to live in a constant state of risk, to put their lives on the line in the fight for a better future.
Or perhaps this change is due to the next major cultural event that occurred: the women's liberation movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. With it, women achieved a better social status for themselves. The women's liberation movement not only brought about change for women, but I would argue that it
