    Thank You

Thanks to all those who contributed, knowingly or unknowingly, to this book. To the many mentors who encouraged me to be the best man I could be, thank you for your support. For all my bosses and teammates who endured my rants, my wild ideas, and my unbridled enthusiasm, thank you for your patience!

A special thanks to the noncommissioned officers who taught me so much about leadership and how to be an officer—many of you will never know the impact you had on me, but it was and is significant.

Finally, thank you to my wife who has stood by me and encouraged me through my entire adult life. You are the reason I have the courage to face the day.

    Forward to the Second Edition

This book began as a set of sticky notes.

Truly! From those humble beginnings, The Five Be’s has become by far my most popular talk as a professional speaker. I originally wrote this book and the talk it sprang from for young adults just starting out in life. However, I’ve been encouraged by the enthusiastic reception from audiences of all ages. Since first published in 2015, The 5 Be’s for Starting Out, I’ve presented these ideas to audiences ranging from middle schoolers to C-suite executives. It’s been fabulous to see how much people identify with the ideals behind The Five Be’s at every age and state of life. I believe there’s a reason for this universal appeal.

The appeal of The Five Be’s can be summed up in one word: authenticity. In our modern age where we experience so much the world through computer screens, people want something that’s real. I believe that’s the reason for the current explosion of craft and hand-made items ranging from furniture to spirits. Our human spirit hungers for connection, for purpose, and for truth.

The Five Be’s is my answer to that search: a positive vision of what an authentic and connected person looks like, and the values that guide their life. The Five Be’s is a prescription for a healthy and successful life: to be fully human. That connection to the world and the people around us is the reason we selected a farmhouse for the cover.

The farmhouse and the open field speaks to connection with the earth and the seasons. An untilled field is ready to be worked and the promise of the harvest that follows. It’s not shiny and new, which speaks to the trials of life and the passage of time. The simplicity of the image reminds us we really need very little to be happy. It’s authentic, it’s connected, it’s real.

Authenticity is the core what The Five Be’s is really all about. Becoming and remaining a fully formed human being in the face of a torrent of things that would keep us from that being. It’s a straightforward guide to life.

    About this Book

This book is about how to live a full, successful, and happy life.

This is not a leadership book, yet good leaders practice these principles and espouse many of these ideas. It’s not a religious book, although you’re sure to see some common religious themes in some of the ideas presented. It’s not a moralist’s view, although you can certainly use the principles I describe to make good moral choices.

This book is a positive vision of who I would like to be, and who I want the ones around me to be. Do I always walk the talk? Of course, I don’t; few do. But I can say that each time I haven’t lived up to my own ideals, I’ve regretted it. The Five Be’s is a vision of a person who can face the world and live in it without being swept away by it. It’s who I want to be.
