Prologue
The telling of this story could never have been told if it were not for the following people who shared their own narratives with me. Sometimes their individual narratives conflicted, but I have tried my best to choose the ones that make this story more accurate from the time-tables of occurrence. My curiosity was peaked several years ago when I realized that the existing information regarding the lives of my grandfather, grandmother and father were very ambiguous and sketchy and could very well disappear with time. I chose primarily to concentrate on two individuals because of a shared dream that both Grandpa Giuseppe Colasante and his son Attilio Colasante had experienced, each in their own way; and secondly, to preserve their Italian as well as their American heritage. Their experiences were recounted to me from memories, first, by the descendants of Giuseppe Colasante and Rosa Della Croce Colasante, namely, my Dad, born Attilio Oreste Italo Colasante in Torricella Peligna, Italy, on July 19, 1904, and my Aunt Virginia Colasante Amadeo, the youngest daughter of Grandma and Grandpa Colasante. Virginia Colasante was born December 24, 1917 in Torrington, Connecticut (and is still living as I finish writing this prologue in June, 2017. She will be 100 years old this December). I am also indebted to Aunt Virginia’s daughter, LaVonne Amadeo Elbset, and LaVonne’s daughter, Alexandra Lee Elbset for their extraordinary contributions.
Prologo
I am also very grateful to the descendants of my Dad’s sister, Flora Maria Colasante Delulio, namely, Mary Delulio Calarco, and her daughter Antoinette Florence Delulio Calarco and our cousin, Bernadette Delulio Gilmore. From their memories also they have allowed me to flesh out the struggle of the family’s newly founded life in America. Secondly, I want to thank Dan Aspromonte for responding to my initial S.O.S. inquiry on the Abruzzo Heritage website and Angela Di Berardino with whom I worked during August of 2016 in the archives of San Giacomo (St. James) Church with the grateful permission of Dom Giuseppe Pietrantonio, pastor of the Church in Torricella Peligna, Italy, birthplace of my father. Without this help I would never have been able to see, touch and photograph the
