To My Kinsman Redeemer J.C You continue to do great things for me.

Bryan, Kalea, Joshua if you continue reaching for the moon, but you gather a few stars along the way. Remember guys you still have Light!

Corrie sat in the unemployment office listening to the same bad news for the seemingly hundredth time this month. The adjuster didn’t get it, did he?

She’d tried three times in the past three weeks to appeal her case. What? Was this guy brain-dead? What didn’t he understand? She did not walk away from her work; she was laid off—let go to be exact. That’s what had happened. But the jerk had insisted on denying her claim because she missed the first telephone interview. She needed the money bad—her rent was behind, all her creditors were calling night and day because of past due payments, but most important of all, she’d promised her twin nieces she would attend their graduation from college in a few weeks.

Now this. What she needed was a nice cold drink, preferably a very cold Moscato. Even though it was still early afternoon, Corrie couldn’t think of a better way to release the now-growing pent-up anger she felt toward the adjuster.

Looking past him to the parking lot, she spied his car. She’d seen him getting into it the second time she had come to appeal his decision. She’d never even thought of keying a car before, but the temptation was so strong. To key his car, she figured she’d better get rid of her unwelcome thoughts by soaking in her tub with a nice cool drink.

Returning her thoughts back to the idiot in front of her, she said very slowly, enunciating each word as if she were talking to a child, Mr. Williams, for the last time, I did not walk away from my work—they asked me not to return. The business fell off. Customers don’t have the money to eat food out as much as they used to, or did you forget we’re in a recession? She sighed.

The man was obviously enjoying the power he had over her. His facial expression showed as much. Why in God’s name did they give these positions to heartless bastards like him? They thought they were gods, holding the power of life and death over decent people like her who were down on their luck. If she were a man, she would have gotten up and smacked that smirk right off his ugly face. Thank God her mother raised her and her sister up to be decent, law-abiding, God-fearing females.

Corrie jumped up so fast she startled Mr. Williams, who almost lost his balance because he had been sitting on the edge of the chair, leering at her. Fine then, keep your damned welfare money! Who needs it anyhow! Corrie shouted.

Ms. Richmond, please lower your voice. You’ll bring security in here if you don’t stop shouting. I think if you just calm down, we might be able to work something out, he said smiling, showing gold teeth that were spaced so far apart they looked like a gold chain in his mouth.

What’s that supposed to mean? Corrie asked, not believing what she was hearing from this pervert.

Williams grabbed his crotch, licked his lips, and said in a low voice, You know exactly what I mean.

You son of a— she stopped herself instantly. He’s not worth me taking my shoe off and going upside his head, she thought. So that’s why she had been back here so many times. The jerk wanted some coochie. Well, not in this life or the next. Straightening herself up to her five feet five inches, she looked Williams dead in the eyes and said very plainly, The answer is no. I’d rather eat beans and live in a shelter than let you touch me. She then very elegantly walked out of his office with a
