    Introduction

This is a story of two pen pals Sally Anderson and Lizzy Smith. They are best friends, who keep in touch through letters at the age of eight. But as they get older; will they still be able to keep in touch as their lives get busy with boys, driving, school and work?

Lizzy has brown short hair and is tall and skinny. She is the youngest in her family. She has an older sister Lindsay and an older brother Brett. Lindsay is 15 and into boys. Brett is 12 and into sports.

Sally has blond curly hair. She is tall and skinny too. She is in the middle of her family. She has an older brother Thomas, and a younger sister Rosie. Thomas has blond hair and is 16 years old. Rosie is 6 and has red hair and loves being able to go to kindergarten now. Sally’s dad got a job in New York so her family moved to New York. Lizzy is very sad, when Sally moves but they promise each other to keep in touch through letters.

    Dear Sally,                                                                    Dec 30, 2009

I miss you lots, since you moved to New York.

What is New York like? Do you get to ride in a taxi cab?

I love living on a farm. I love all the animals on our farm, Betsy our cow is such a good cow. She holds still while I milk her. Fresh milk from a cow is very good. Do you remember when you got to help me make homemade butter? It was a lot of work to turn the cream to make butter, but it was worth it… .

Do you like the new school in Liverpool? I’m glad I do not have to wear uniforms to school. What color is your uniform?

Freddy a red head with freckles likes me and he is so cute. I like Freddy too.

    Well, keep in touch.

Love you. I got go my mom is calling me to practice the piano.

    Love, Lizzy

    Dear Lizzy,                                                                    Jan 2, 2010

I miss you too. I got your letter today. Thanks for writing me.

New York is a very busy place with lots of people walking. There are lots of cars on the road too.

The new school here is nice. My uniform is red and blue. My teacher sister Summer’s, she is very kind to me. She had me come to the front of the class and tell my name and where I am from to the whole class. I do not like standing in front of people. Do you like to stand in front of people and talk? I was glad when I could go back and sit in my seat.

    How was practicing the piano?

I have not ridden in a taxi yet? My mom drives me and Rosie to school everyday. How did your new years go? I got to make a gingerbread house and eat popcorn. Rosie liked watching me make the gingerbread house. Wow gingerbread is a big word to spell. My mom told me how to spell it. Do you know how to spell gingerbread?

How is your dog Penny doing? Has she had her puppies yet? I would love to have one of her puppies. I am so glad to have you as a friend. Love you.

    Write soon.

    Love your friend Sally

    Dear Sally,                                                                    Jan 8th, 2010

That is cool that your mom drives you and Rosie to school. I do not like standing in front of people and talking.

I get to walk to school. I miss walking with you to school. Penny has not had her puppies yet. I’ll ask my mom if I can give you one of Penny’s puppies. My new Years, was a lot of fun. I got to go sledding with my dad and Sister Lindsay, My dad would hold the sled still so I could get on it and then he would give me a push and I would go sliding down the hill. Do you like to go sledding? Lindsay went with me on a sled down the hill too. Lindsay would have me sit in her lap and wrap her arms around me as we went down the hill.

Piano practice was okay. I am learning how to play the song Mary had a little lamb.

Have you made any friends there? Mary who would sit behind you in class invites me to sit by her at lunch. Mary is nice.

I do not know how to spell gingerbread. So I copied if off your letter… Do you have someone to sit with at lunch? How is recess there? I like to play the card game uno with Freddy at recess. Can you believe it? Freddy and I play uno together.

    Love your friend Lizzy

    Dear Lizzy,                                                                    Jan 13, 2010

I have made a friend here. Her name is Martha. She has brown hair that she wears in two braids. She is nice to me. Martha and I sit next to each other at lunch.

Sledding sounds like fun. I do like to sled too. Have you made snow angels yet? Do you remember when we made snow angels all around your house? Then we went and showed your mom and she told us that the snow angels were watching over us.

Recess is fun here. Martha and I play tag. That is cool Freddy plays uno with you. How many puppies do you think Penny will have? I want a girl puppy okay?

My mom helped me make chocolate chip cookies yesterday. Do you remember when we would eat some of the dough while the cookies were cooking in the oven? Why don’t you invite Mary over to your house so you can make chocolate chip cookies too?

I asked my mom if Martha can come over and play after school tomorrow. My mom said yes. So I will invite Martha to come over tomorrow after school. Martha does not have a lot of friends. So I am her friend. Who is your teacher at school?

    Love Sally

    Dear Sally,                                                                    Jan 15th, 2010

I did make snow angels in my front yard. Yes I remember eating chocolate chip cookie dough with you. That is a good idea to invite Mary over to make chocolate chip cookies with me. I will ask my mom if Mary can come and make cookies after school tomorrow.

You are nice to be friends with Martha. How was it playing with Martha at your house? What did you and Martha play?

I hope Penny has 5 or six puppies. Penny had her puppies last night. She had 3 girl puppies and 3 boy puppies. The puppies are so cute. My mom told me you can have a girl puppy.

When will you come to visit your Grandma Anderson?

Sister James is my teacher this year. She is very kind to me. Who is Rosie’s teacher? Do you like spelling? I like to spell when I can spell the words right. Do you like history? I love learning about USA. My teacher said today that we get to make a valentine box to put our valentines in. That will be cool.

    Love, your friend Lizzy

    Dear Lizzy,                                                                    Jan 17th 2010

It was great having Martha at my house to play. We played the card game old maid and that was a lot of fun. Then Martha asked me,
