    Keeper - Angelique Terranova Nakken

    Chapter 1

Raffitto had separated himself from the government to find extra-terrestrial life in space. His work had been hindered on several occasions by his colleagues. His colleagues erased data when they could, in order to sabotage his beliefs and stop him from finding anything. Some had gone as far as to say that by proving the existence of extra-terrestrial life, would be to admit there was no God. The questions of a life found, would emit chaos throughout the entire world. It was then that he had decided to leave and take only those that believed in his cause. Financers were found who wanted the research to go on. Their reason for financing was to explore the possibility of trade, as well as building technology in half of the building, that would not be used. He went to work early, to discover that he was not the only one that was there. On most occasions when he went in early, he would find himself with one other. This time however, he found that there were others there. Uctore’, Rason, and Lance were showing up just as he arrived.

Turning on the computers and monitors, they searched for any sign of life in the darkest corners of their universe. Genser carried a notebook and pen, writing down any blips or changes he could find, when he saw the screen change, with an object headed straight for their planet, which was called Gideon. The monitor had drawn a line from the object, straight to the planet, and the screen was flashing red. After checking the monitor twice, he decided that he was seeing something on the screen and it was indeed real. Raffitto, he raised his head searching the room. I have something on Monitor nine.

As the excitement pulsed through Raffitto’s veins, he made his way over to where Genser was, hoping that at long last they had reached their objective. What is it?

I am not sure. His eyes squinted at the screen in front of him. Whatever it is, it appears to be headed straight for our planet.

Raffitto stood behind him looking over his shoulder. Have you tried magnifying it?

No, I did not think of it, in his excitement he had forgotten to do it.

Well then, what are you waiting for, magnify it one hundred times.

Genser typed in the command. It looks like a rock!

Can we put it on a larger screen? Raffitto placed his hand on his beard, running his fingers through it. He watched the screen that was twenty feet long by ten feet wide, in front of the room. Oh, my God, he whispered. When he had started his research, he could not have calculated finding anything that would compare to what he saw on the screen.

Maybe the computer miscalculated, Genser sounded hopeful in his statement, but knew that the odds would be against him.

    Uctore’, Raffitto called to him.

He had been running reports from one of the data machines, looking for a signal from another world, turning his head to the direction of the voice, What?

Look at the screen behind you.

Looking up, he tilted his head, not sure what he was looking at. A rock of orange and white was in front of him in the upper right corner the computer, statistics showed impact on Gideon to be in eight weeks. Uctore’s eyes became wide, and his mouth dropped as the realization of what he was viewing came to mind. Are you sure about this?

Very sure, we are going to need to do something. If anyone has any suggestions, I would like to hear it. Raffitto watched his companions hoping for an answer.

Rason, the only woman in the room had looked to the screen to see what the commotion was about. When she saw the meteor on the screen, she didn’t realize the importance of it. Until she saw the timer in the corner counting down and the arrow that displayed where it would impact, she placed her hand to her mouth. Her mind raced, the impact would cause world-wide destruction, unless there was a way to hide from it. After gaining some composure, she looked to the others. I might have a suggestion.

Everyone’s attention turned to her. What is it? Raffitto removed his glasses, rubbing his eyes.

When I was starting out in science, I researched old buildings and came across a file that was written over six hundred years ago, it included blue-prints. Anyway, this building was built in a mountain. Others that saw the file told me it was a joke because the technology was not around at that time. They told me that they just keep it to teach new comers a lesson, between fact and fiction. She paused, shuffling her feet and taking a deep breath. I found out that it is real, the town’s name has changed and I know the location.

Have you seen it? Raffitto set his glasses on the computer table next to him.

I have seen the mountain, she paused, looking at the faces of her colleagues. I was not able to locate the entrance without the blue-prints, but I know it is there.

How can we be sure it is there, if you did not see it?

I know it is. I just need to get the blue-prints to find it.

Can you get a copy of the blue-prints? Raffitto picked up his glasses and placed them in the cradle of his nose.

Yes, I am sure that I can, as long as no one asks any questions. I can get a copy by this afternoon.

Lance listened as he watched the screen. What if this is a hoax, what if there is no building, then what?

We have to try something, or all of humanity will be lost. Raffitto turned his gaze to Rason. I appreciate everything you have said and everything that you will do. Just be back as soon as possible. If I am at home, feel free to call me, no matter what time it is. He looked at the computer monitor in front of him. Lance, I want you to record this, and erase it from all the computers, I would also like for you to monitor the situation every day. Genser, I want you to get three other people to look for the building when Rason returns and I do not want anyone but us to know about this. He pointed to the screen. We do not want to start a panic of any sort.

    Chapter 2

Genser typed in a command into the computer that would only allow him to monitor the meteors path. No one would be able to view it, without him opening the window and giving access to it. Each morning, before anyone showed up at the laboratory, he downloaded the information on disk and then handed it to Raffitto.

Rason had no trouble in acquiring a copy of the blue-prints. Letting the scientists in the government building believe that she was a teacher and wanted her pupils to understand fact from fiction, a lesson that would last a lifetime. She went in search of the opening into the mountain, in order to find a place to save some of the population. Within two weeks she returned with news that they were successful in finding the underground laboratory and entrance. One week after her return, notices were sent out, announcing a meeting to be held in an observatory in the town of Valle. Within a week letters were sent back saying that everyone would indeed attend. With only three weeks left, until the planned meteor strike, the meeting was held with everyone on the list in attendance.

Raffitto had organized the meeting, taking great care to cover the reason behind it. Making it sound like a convention that would be held for those chosen to be of little importance, which made certain people feel superior to those that went. He was nervous, as he watched people file into the room. Once the last person had arrived the doors were locked, to make sure that no one would come in and over hear the meeting. Stepping up to the podium, he gathered his papers together and tapped the microphone. Ladies and gentlemen, he began. May I have your attention please, he waited while the buzz of whispers ceased before he continued. "You have been called here on a very urgent matter. I ask that all of you that have come to this meeting today, to keep the announcement inside these walls. All questions will be directed to my colleagues, upon the end of this meeting, for I have urgent matters that I need to tend to.

Now I shall begin by showing all of you some pictures, which I will explain as they are shown to you. He turned to a man next to him and his head went down and up to let him know it was time. The lights dimmed and a movie screen behind him lit up. What you are about to see, is a meteor. A very large rock appeared on the screen. It was surrounded by tiny dots of light in a velvet sky. My colleagues and I have been tracking it since it first appeared in our solar system. This particular meteor has all of us very concerned, I do not expect any different from any of you here, for there is a problem that I must let all of you know. My colleagues and I have come to the conclusion that the meteor is headed right for our planet.

Gasps filled the room, and Raffitto held up his hand. This was no time for questions or any outcry. He needed to let them know and let them decide their own fate. The reactions he expected began to rise, first with disbelief. Please, let me finish. You will all have plenty of time to ask questions, and find out more. I know this knowledge will bother all of you, as it has with me. I assure you, that we have formulated a plan. In this next picture, you will see that we have predicted the impact to be here. Clear on the other side of our planet. We believe that a cloud of dust will envelop the entire planet, and that there will be some major earthquakes. We also know that there is a chance for survival. Another picture had filled the screen. It was a picture of a mountain with trees near a lake.

Now you will find out the reason why we chose this particular observatory that we are in today. This picture here shows the mountains behind where we are standing. We know for a fact that hidden inside this particular mountain there are fully equipped laboratories and enough rooms to house all of us here, including our families. The entrance of the laboratory was visible on the screen. A home video was shown of the inside of the laboratory. There was no dust, or spider webs. Every room that was shown was very clean. Which meant the mountain was air tight. "We discovered this laboratory buried deep within the files of our ancestors. Very much in disbelief we were, until we entered into the mountain and made our discovery. We have known about this place for nearly three weeks. From what we understand, this laboratory was built around six hundred years ago. We have not discovered the reason why this laboratory was built, or the reason why it was abandoned. We do not know, however, that the entire building is solar powered creating its own environment. We will be perfectly safe from the after effects of the meteor. Which brings me back to why I have called you here, but I feel that I need to warn all of you. We cannot let anything out, for it will cause people to come to the mountain demanding to be let in. This is the main reason why we cannot let anyone know what we speak of in here. Do not, under any circumstances, let your family members know what is happening. Once we are settled within the mountain, they will find out everything. I understand the need to let them know, but you must all understand that they cannot. Not until we are ready for it.

We will all meet back here, at dusk this evening. I have many trucks that will move all of us through the night. That will give you plenty of time to get your family and personal belongings together. Remember, we haven’t got much time, so if there are any questions, please feel free to ask my colleagues, and keep them as short as possible. I will see all of you later this evening when the trucks arrive. He gathered his papers up, and began to walk away from the podium. Questions came at him from every direction, but he did not pause, nor acknowledge them. Time was something they did not have. Preparations were being made as he spoke. Plants that would grow fruit and vegetables were being transported, then people.

Eventually the group dispersed, beginning to move their families and their belongings through the night. Semi-trucks full of people and their personal belongings were transported to the safety of the mountain. Supplies came in other trucks, and were unloaded as quickly as possible. New, updated laboratory equipment was brought into the mountain. Day and night they watched the meteor with avid anticipation.

Until the day before the meteor was to strike, word was being spread throughout the entire world. People all over began to panic, as the end of the world was at hand. Riots ran through every town, while some hid in safety of basements, within their homes. Television news channels were showing the meteor that was headed to their planet, chaos was ripping through the entire world as people began to pray.

A shadow had appeared in the setting sun, near the town of Valle, before the meteor was to hit. The shadow had been the shape of a person, with their arms held up above their head as if they had been asking God for forgiveness. Then, the hands began to sway, giving directions, it seemed, to who or what, no one knew. Many people thought it to be the shadow of God. With a message, that all would soon be lost. Others that saw the shadow, thought they had seen an outline of wings, they believed that they would need to follow this shadow when they died in order to be received into heaven. The shadow stretched and grew as the sun carried on its descent, to allow the night to take over the day.

With the end of the world at hand, the scientists and their families gathered in front of a video screen to watch the meteors final descent toward the planet. Not aware of the shadow that began to settle over the town below. Deep within the mountain, not a sound could be heard. Loved ones held each other tight waiting for the impact of the meteor. Some did not believe they would live through it. Life would change at a drastic rate as they watched the destruction of the world. They expected the meteor to hit within five minutes. Some were biting their nails or chewing on the tips of writing utensils. Sweat was pouring off Raffitto’s face, eyes wide open, and the side of his cheek was sucking in and out. He knew the mountain would keep them safe, but he could not help the thoughts of destruction that would follow the impact. The meteor would shake the entire world. Mindlessly he tossed a pen between his hands, waiting. Others had grabbed onto objects, knuckles turning white, as the meteor came closer.

A loud whistling sound was heard throughout the world as people stopped what they had been doing. People all over were looking around, not sure of what to do or where to go. Hearts were beating very fast while people waited in silence all over. Then, quite suddenly a loud bang came from above. As people looked up at the sky, waiting to see the meteor, or falling debris, instead what they saw had amazed them. Some unknown force had pushed the meteor to the side, causing it to crash into one of the planets thirteen moons. A circle of rainbow colored light had filled the sky, and the people had gazed upward, with their eyes wide. If this
