About this ebook

Is it not remarkable how a dog can have a positive impact, in some cases a profound impact on the lives of people. Canines perform remarkable services. They are employed in law enforcement, search and rescue missions, agriculture, hunting, servicing the handicapped, entertaining the public, just to name a few. Probably the most important service, however, is the ability of the dog to be a great pet and companion. In almost all instances the master becomes deeply attached to the animal at many levels and discovers the relationship to be incredibly fulfilling.
Sometimes it takes years before one fully realizes how important a dog was in ones life; especially during the growing up years. The mere presence of a pet often brought comfort in the times of loneliness, discouragement, confusion, or distress. The animal was a friend with whom one could share ones deepest thoughts and childhood adventures. This writing is a collection of vignettes about one such mutt; Rex, the dog of my youth.

Appreciation must be expressed to my parents for creating the environment in which their sons could enjoy the companionship of a dog during our growing-up years. In addition, I thank my brothers, Jeff and Bill, for their input.

Finally, I am grateful for the contributions of my wife, Sheryl, and four of my children, Rob, Jeremie, Treva and Jennifer for their suggestions and for editing the manuscript.

    CHAPTER I

    The Discovery

W e had recently taken residence in a two story French tutor home in a south suburb of Salt Lake City. The house had been converted to a duplex by our Uncle Vic who was the twin brother of our deceased father. This was the third dwelling the four of us had occupied since that tragic day in October, 1948. The apartment was certainly adequate to meet our needs, or it seemed to the three of us boys; Bill seven, Bob five, and Jeff, four years old. The house sat deep in a rectangular lot. The east and west boundaries were defined by lilac bushes which formed a continuous hedge, except where the driveway fed into the wood-framed garage in the back yard. It was here that we spent most of our days playing and allowing our imaginations to run away with us. We would jump from the roof of the garage into a pile of leaves, swing from the base of a thick hemp rope that was tethered to a sturdy branch of a weeping willow tree, race
