EPILOGUE
Written with love to all my family and friends
THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Congratulations! We finally did it…completed our book of poems. Wow!
And, now, what is our next project? Shall we continue to write and to dream?
Why not?
We find great joy in the pen. We can talk to each other and to others. We must remember that we are writing for the generations to come… our generations. Do you think that the family will create an author within the next generation, as well?
These ventures are so exciting. I cannot wait to continue telling tales about the family and the neighborhood. The neighborhood in all its uniqueness was a fascinating community of hard working laborers, domestic workers, factory laborers and a few professional; as well.
Seaport Town was a small community of family and friends. All the people knew one another. Whether we lived in town or in the country, we still knew all of the folk in Seaport Town, the oyster hub of the area… population twenty thousand.
We could divide the community by its churches. There were four small churches on the side of town… where all the Black folks lived.
Most of the folks attended the Christ Pentecostal Church. The Pentecostal church boasted of shouting spirit-filled preachers. The musicians were the envy of the other churches in East Seaport. All of their musicians could play multiple instruments, sing, and write songs.
The Greater Hope A.M.E. Church and St. James A.M. E. Zion Church faced one another on opposite sides of Franklin Street which was the main thoroughfare in the heart of East Seaport. At any time of a day, Franklin Street was bustling with traffic and business.
Mr. Ned’s Barbershop was on the north end of the street. Across the street from the barbershop was the Grear’s Garage and gas station owned by Mr. Ned’s brother, Jonathan Grear. The Harold, a two-story hotel, stood in the middle of the block.
Cousin Ned’s Hot Dog and Shoe Shine stand was crunched between two apartment buildings. And, next door to the three buildings was Pop’s Taxi and and candy store.
On the south end of the busy street, was Muriel’s Luncheonette, Ms. Ollie’s Take-Out Booth, and the Saturday Night Dance Parlor. Traveling south on Franklin Street, it was hard to miss the Bar & Grill, Fisher’s Package Store, and the State Service Center &
