    THE FATHERLESS BOYS

Tina stood looking out over the landscape, delighting in its beauty with a happy heart.

After working long and hard for the last five years, she had finally achieved her main objective. Today marked the opening of her first boutique.

She had supervised the movers on where to put things. She had moved some objects around to add to the ambiance of the store. She was finally free of the guilt. God knows she had lived with it every night.

She had spent the last five years as a successful public relations manager for one of the largest publishing houses in New York. She had written romance novels in her spare time. The hobby had turned into a lucrative career. She was now available to pursue her life-long dream of owning a specialty boutique for conservative women with a little extra.

She had no social life of her own. Her time was spent volunteering at one of her two sons schools, at work, writing (her hobby), or working in the church.

Tina’s was the boutiques name. It was a very exclusive boutique catering to the wealthy and professional women of the town.

She had written her stories under the name Faye Hollingsworth. No one had made the connection.

Owning this boutique away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities was a lifelong dream. She had settled in this small Texas town. Now, she thought, I can live with my secrets. With no chance of seeing Jason Senior again she breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe now she could relax.

Jason, her sixteen year old had been asking her a lot of questions about his father lately. Mark, his eight year old brother, had been asking the same questions. Questions she did not want to answer. The pain still ran too deep. The pain of loving someone and not having that love returned. She just couldn’t answer her son’s questions as yet. One day, just not now.

Both boys had a disturbing likeness to their father both physically and in their mannerisms.

Jason Junior and Mark both had that errant lock of hair like their father. Which made them look like they had just come from outside in a windstorm. Jason Junior was developing physically more and more like his father. He was tall for his age, broad shouldered, and he had Jason’s aristocratic chin. His eyes were the same steel grey of his father’s.

Mark had green eyes like hers. No one looking at the boys would doubt their heritage. She was lucky that Jason had not tried to find her in the last eight years like he had the eight years before. She smiled, she had moved away as soon as her second pregnancy could no longer be hidden, working under an assumed name since.

Today, she felt an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach that she could not shake.

She was just moving the candelabra when both boys burst in laughing and out of breath. This was a chilly November morning and she was making the best of it. She was cleaning and rearranging little odds and ends to make more picturesque places.

Jason Junior said it first, then Mark chimed in. Mom there was a man at the store that kept staring at us as if he had seen ghosts. Yeah, mom ghosts, Mark chimed in. She laughed as she ruffled both her sons’ hair. She told them it was probably because they were new in town. Tina said by this being a small town everybody probably knew everybody else.

As she continued moving about, she noticed Jason Junior was looking at her funny.

"Okay, what is it?’ she said.

Jason cleared his throat, Mom he looks a lot like us.

He had the same hair color as ours. His eyes were the color of mine and he was tall like you said our dad was. He started to follow us, but we ran and ran.

    Mom who is he?

The uneasy feeling in her stomach quickly sped up to her head and panic engulfed her.

Those were the last words she heard as she fainted into oblivion.

She woke up to the smell of something strong being held under her nose. She coughed and opened her eyes very slowly. Jason Junior and Mark stood to the side as the strange man checked her pulse, her head, and her blood pressure before pronouncing her fit.

That’s when she saw him. He stood just inside the door. His look was one of burning contempt. He looked from both boys then back to her.

He still had the blue black hair liberally sprinkled with grey. His eyes were the color of storm grey and narrowed.

Her eyes widened as he slowly walked into the sitting room and looked down at her.

Thank you. he said to the strange man by now she had assumed had been a doctor.

It was only her Jason Senior, Jason Junior, and Mark in the room.

    She slowly sat up.

She told both boys to go to their room to finish unpacking. They both halted. After assuring them she was fine they both trudged upstairs.

The showdown with Jason Senior was not going to be pleasant and she knew it.

She then turned to face Jason Senior.

Mine, both of them, he demanded.

She nodded her head and sat back down, her legs suddenly unable to support her.

She had dreaded this day for seventeen years. She thought she had covered her tracks well. Now she had settled in the same town with Jason Senior.

I thought when you disappeared the first time you were embarrassed, Jason said. After all you were a virgin. Then you disappeared a second time and I did not know what to think.

Right now I could kill you. You kept my sons from me all these years.

Jason was seething with anger. My sons and one is almost grown. You are no good.

He stood, with his back to her, hands clenched in his pockets. Tina jumped and sped to the bathroom to throw up. Jason snatched her by the arm and she promptly threw up on the both of them.

Jason moved away from Tina, You are one cunning virgin, he hissed.

Tina started crying. Jason was beyond caring.

He walked toward the door, turned around and said, You tell them, I will be expecting to hear from you in the next few days.

I don’t know where you live, wailed Tina.

Ask anyone, the town is named after my family, Taylor.

He then turned and walked out.

As if on cue, both boys came running down the stairs. Jason was the first to speak. He is our father isn’t he?

Mark piped up, He is our dad right?

She nodded her head slowly. She was developing a giant sized headache.

She wasn’t prepared for their actions. Jason Junior gathered his younger brother in his arms and he began to dance around the room, with Mark laughing all the time.

I knew it, I knew it, the minute I saw him, and I knew he was our dad. Jason Junior said.

Jason Junior put Mark down, walked over to his mother and asked to tell them about their father.

At first she resisted, but there were so many questions in her son’s eyes that begged for answers.

She began to tell them about her relationship with their father.

Eighteen years ago she had been a naïve seventeen year old. She was shy and reserved. She had always been that way even as a child, so she did not make friends easily. She had entered her first year of college on an academic scholarship.

Her roommate Yvlonda was from a very wealthy family, but she did not flaunt it in front of Tina. The two got along well. Tina shy; Yvlonda outgoing. Yvlonda would go home every weekend while Tina stayed at school and took long walks or studied for the next week.

One Sunday Yvlonda came back all excited.

My cousin Jason will be at home next weekend and I haven’t found him a date!

Tina would you be willing to come spend the weekend at my house. It would take you off this stuffy campus for a few days.

Tina looked startled. Then she started laughing.

You are kidding, right, she asked

One look at Yvlonda’s stern face told her that her friend was dead serious.

I don’t have anything to wear, moaned Tina.

    Let’s go shopping, Yvlonda laughed.

Both girls practically ran out of the apartment heading for the mall.

Friday rolled around bright and clear. Tina was up and ready to leave before Yvlonda put her head out from under the covers.

At exactly nine in the morning a cream and gold Rolls Royce rolled up in front of their apartment.

Tina suddenly had an anxiety attack. She could not believe her eyes. With Yvlonda reminding her of her promise and at the same time handing the chauffeur their bags Yvlonda managed to get a very nervous Tina into the car.

Yvlonda talked to Tina the whole ride trying to ease her anxiety and prepare her for the other displays of wealth she would encounter.

They drove briskly through the city. Quickly arriving on the outskirts into the land of milk and honey. Tina was awed by the beauty of the reds and gold’s of the early spring leaves dropping from the trees. Sweet smells filled the air. Tina drank in the beauty of the countryside. Treasuring this trip.

Tina was stunned by the old world charm of Yvlonda’s family home. After going through the electric gates the chauffeur had driven another half mile before reaching the actual house. As they rode along the driveway. Tina saw all kinds of trees lining the driveway. In the center of the courtyard stood a man-made spring bubbling down onto small iridescent rocks into a cherub shaped pond.

Tina was craning her neck back and forth trying to catch all the beautiful sights.

When the car pulled up to the front door, as if on cue, a slightly greying, solidly built man stepped out of the front door pushing a portable valet. Yvlonda ran up to the man and kissed him on the jaw. She turned to Tina and introduced her to Jenkins, the family’s butler. Tina quietly said hello.

Yvlonda led the way into the house. In a large room were gathered several people. Yvlonda introduced Tina to a tall grey haired distinguished couple.

Mom and Dad, this is my friend, Tina, she said

The woman stepped forward. Call me Catherine, dear, she said.

The man then stepped forward. Call me Carlton, Tina, he said, Nice to finally meet you.

Yvlonda then turned to a tall dark haired man who was standing next to the fireplace with a drink in his hand seemingly absorbed in the fire.

Yvlonda said, Jason, this is my friend Tina. The friend I was telling you about.

Hello, said Tina looking at a spot at a point slightly above his nose.

Jason threw back and laughed uproariously.

She’s not like any of your other friends, Yvlonda, she’s afraid to look at me.

Tina raised her eyes from the point above his nose and looked into the clearest grey adds she had ever seen. She coughed and stammered. I’m not used to men staring.

    Jason laughed again. How refreshing.

Yvlonda made the other introductions. Taking Tina all around the room.

After the introductions were over Yvlonda left Tina to go to talk to her mom and dad. Tina walked over to the large ice carved statue sitting in the middle of the huge punch bowl and fixed herself a drink.

She was standing by the table absorbed in thoughts when she became aware of someone staring at her. She turned and scanned the room, looking for whoever it might be.

As she looked through the crowd her eyes made contact with Jason’s. She blushed and looked away.

She turned and almost ran for the veranda. As the wind was blowing through her thick chestnut hair, she was fighting to hold down her deep blue swirl skirt.

A hand ran through her hair and she jumped to the balcony’s edge turning to see who her assailant was. She looked into the clear grey eyes she had seen earlier.

    Jason, you scared me.

Jason stood a good foot taller. He was 6'5" tall and she was
